    (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LORD OF THE FLIES, 1984, and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

    A few potentially debatable characters come to mind - you could argue that Winston from 1984 was trying to better humanity by telling the truth about society, but was ultimately punished.

    You could also argue Atticus Finch tries to better society by fighting for an innocent man and his rights (Tom Robinson), however, Robinson does end up being found guilty, and Atticus becomes distressed because of the decision.

    Of course one of the characters that comes to mind when 'suffering' is mentioned is Tess Durbeyfield, from Tess of the D'Urbervilles, however, I think it would be very difficult to make an argument that supports the idea that she was trying to better society, and not just herself.

    Oh and the book I use constantly for literature based stuff is Lord of the Flies. You can argue that Piggy, Ralph, and Simon all trying and better the boys' society, but 2/3 boys end up dead. Arguably, Jack also tries to better society, but does it in such a way that has negative repercussions. In the end, Jack realizes what he has done and they all break down crying during the last scene.

    These are just a few ideas, feel free to refute them or not use them if you like. I tend to think a little more abstractly anyways, so these might be a bit of a reach. Also, if you need more specific details, I can give you more specifics, maybe even page numbers if I can dig up some essays.

    YOUR QUESTION:anyone have a way that I can remember the word patronage? Just like a helpful catchy way to remember?

      When remembering words, I try to think of the phrases I associate them with. In what phrase do you hear the word "patronage" come up?
      For me, I think of, "Thank you for your patronage".
      From there, I try to think of the context where this phrase is used. Generally, whenever someone donates something to a group or organization, they will say "Thank you for your patronage". Try to use context clues to think of the meaning of the word from there. What words could you replace "patronage" with and still have the sentence make sense in relation to the context?
      Try these:
      - contribution
      - donation
      - support

      In the political realm, you can think of this word in almost the same context. Let's say someone donated or showed support to a politician. That politician could then say "Thank you for your patronage" and then -- here's the key -- reward that person as sort of a "thank you". How can a politician reward someone?
      - With a public office
      - With a job
      - Other political favors

      So let's think of a phrase to remember all of this...

      Thank you for your patronage,
      Now here's a job that's above average

      A less catchy way of remembering it would be to think of patronage as "favoritism". There are generally two ways public office positions are achieved: patronage (favoritism) or merit (best fit)

        Bob is a politician
        Garret is his favorite
        Joe has the merit,
        But the job is given to Garret

        - A lovely poem by yours truly haha

      I hope this helps a little bit! feel free to ask any questions if you need clarification! <3

I'm having a hard time thinking about the reasons why you shouldn't drop out, and why you should stay in school and all that. I have already gotten the obvious ones, such as jobs and education, but I need more reasons. Help?

    I HAVE A QUESTION!
    TYPE OF QUESTION: Math | Algebra 1
    YOUR QUESTION:
    1) If you know the fifth term in an arithmetic sequence and the common difference, can you write a recursive formula for the sequence? Explain why or why not?
    2) There is a geometric theorem that says "If two lines in a plane are perpendicular to the same line, they are parallel to each other." Explain why this is true by writing and comparing equations for two different lines that are perpendicular to y = -1/3x.
    3) The phrase miles per hour is an example of a rate of change. What other rates of change commonly used in everyday speech can you think of?
    4) Can a system of two linear equations have only two or three solutions? Why or why not?

      Okaaay...
      1) Yes, you can. To write a formula for an arithmetic sequence, all you need is the common difference and one term (you can extrapolate from there). I'm not really sure how to explain this any more thoroughly, but if you need more detail, think about what an arithmetic sequence represents and go from there.
      2)
      • Find the equation of a line that is perpendicular to y = -1/3x. (For a line to be perpendicular, its slope must be the negative reciprocal of -1/3.)
      • Find any other equation by shifting the line you just found up or down.
      • Compare the two to y = -1/3x (I'd graph them; that'll give you a better understanding of how it works. Use a graphing calculator/graphing websites if you need to.)
      3) This doesn't need to be elaborate. You can even change it out to _____ per hour, or miles per _____.
      4) A system of linear equations can have either one or infinite solutions (in a case where the lines have identical equations and are thus plotted on top of each other). They can't have two or three solutions because... think about it, if you have two perfectly straight lines, how can you get them to cross exactly twice?
      Good luck, feel free to PM me!
      I miss when math was this straightforward. XD

        Simply take the answer you got for your variable and substitute it back into the equation and solve. If the equation is true, then your answer was correct.

        Example:

        3x + 6 = 12
        3x = 6
        x=2

        (3x2) + 6 = 12
        6 + 6 = 12
        12 = 12 (which is a true statement)

        You can even subtract 12 from both sides to make it be 0 = 0, which is still a true statement.
