They are based on items. The front page of this thread shows which item goes with which pet.

I read on this thread that tonights present is based off of plushies/toys, if that is the case, is there someone who knows what plushie goes with each animal and year? I am going to probably be up all night trying to get the matching toys for the new pets, they are just adorable!!!!!!

I am really excited for this! And the pets today are so lovely! Also, I just discovered the seasonal name generator and went on a naming spree. Now all of my neglected Christmas pets finally have names.
