i.. i call it yaoi..

the "yaoi" genre is based around the characters' relationships almost entirely, and is like 45% 'adult' themes. there's also the (really gross) gender-role aspect (like,, seme/uke, where one is more feminine and the other is hyper-masculine) that is in yaoi animes. even calling it shounen-ai (which is like,,soft yaoi) is kinda :// to me because it's not focused around their relationship at all! If there's a sports anime with a heterosexual couple, it's still just a sports anime. yuri on ice shouldn't be any different just because it's a gay couple, u feel?

also im like 85% sure that it was confirmed a kiss by the creator of the show on twitter but i dont have those #receipts on me so idk

i think its yaoi because to me the show is based on their relationship. its both yoai and not yoai because the meaning of the show is different for different people.

Not all yaoi is ppl with trouser bowsers playin lightsabers, some is just the romance of a relationship.

Tbh I've always kinda viewed yaoi and yuri as the enn ess eff dubbleyew genres/classifications and shouen ai and shoujou ai as the nonsexual, cute romance/platonic stuff. Without the erotic element, it's easily blended with other genres (including sports), and can cause a whole lot of disagreement, especially in a show like this where the demographic is relatively young and the main characters are the ones in the relationship. This isn't like, say... Psycho-Pass, which is directed at an older audience and contains a homosexual relationship (Shion Karanomori and Yayoi Kunizuka, confirmed as of S1E22)... within the supporting cast, where it's very far from the focus of the show and and very hard to mistake as such.

Unlike those two, however, with Victuuri we're following Yuri's story - it's right in the title of the anime, and very abundantly clear from even episode one. If he's in a relationship, it's going to get a whole lot of screentime and be, arguably, integral to the plot whether it's heterosexual or not. However you feel about BL gender roles or how healthily/accurately their relationship is portrayed, it can very, very easily be said to be shounen ai. Even if the focus is on sports and that's a more than sound argument, their relationship is also a focus. Their interactions as a couple and as a coach/skater are a focus. Maybe not as major as figure skating, but most certainly prominent.

Of course, there are different interpretations of the show's "focus" and the categories it fits into (not to mention views of the categories themselves or what the heck a "focus" even is, there's no such thing as objectivity, etc etc), so I feel like everybody here has a valid point on some level - with something as touchy and subjective as this, there's hardly any wrong answers. I'm going to call it a shounen ai for the moment, albeit hesitantly, and see how it goes.

BL (boy love) is more of what we are talking about (bl can have adult content too but does not have to)

Sometimes in the US or other countries people who don't understand this use the words interchangeably. This is wrong. In Japan there is a totally different connotation. If you say yaoi you ARE talking about basically adult content with essentially no plot or character development

lets all just agree to disagree and leave it at that. This isn't a place to fight over what this anime is. It is to bring everyone together for the same thing and that is showing the love of YOI. It doesn't matter what Yaoi or BL is. So everyone please stop fighting and lets get back to talking about how awesome this show is.
