I think you technically means friend on its own, but it's just not ever said that way. Pretty sure it means friend in Japanese too, so that's possible.

oh, yeah it can be friend by itself, too, but is generally paired with peng to make friend

I love this horse!! If I am not mistaken the symbol is Friendship, I might be completely wrong....but oh my goodness the horse is just beautiful!!!

like catsmeow said, it's the Japanese Kanji symbol for Friendship (友). The word for horse in Japanese is Uma (うま), Chinese is Mǎ (马)
