Shipboard AIs
Classification: Artificial Intelligence
Tier: 0.5
Status: UnrestrictedThe Tier 0.5 AI is a concept which has been widely disputed both in terms of ethics and safety. Tier '0.5' AIs are arguably the most advanced form of artificial intelligence. A combination of conscious, human-like Tier 0's and the highly efficient and extremely powerful mental capacity of Tier 1's results in an incredibly intelligent but also quite humanoid entity, with personality and self-awareness like any human but with far greater computational abilities, memory, and capacity for multitasking and performing complex tasks. When one takes into account the innate human fear that their creations will rise up against them once they realize they have that capacity, it is easy to tell why such entities would be controversial. These claims are only backed up by the failures of the tiny existing Tier 0.5 population; few could be considered 'neurotypical' humans of any sort, and they are often prone to what humans might call mental disorders. These AIs are now illegal without mandatory restrictions on their actions built into their code to prevent them from harming biological humans (a law that is punishable by death to the AI), though this too has created controversy over whether or not they are to be trusted and treated as normal humans or suppressed on account of the possible dangers their mental superiority may bring. A few, however, manage to linger around undetected on the outskirts of society even without these safety restrictions; a very tiny fraction even manage to pose as humans or Tier 0 AIs. Life is dangerous for all Tier 0.5's, as even small misdemeanors can have extreme punishments when the culprit is an artificial intelligence.
Shipboard AI is a general term for the systems that run on a starship. Over 99% of these are Tier 1's, perhaps with a basic and preprogrammed 'human-like' interface designed to act and speak like a human but not sentient or capable of feelings and emotions (though Tier 1's will often be designed to pretend to be capable of these qualities). However, on incredibly rare occasions, ships will have a restricted Tier 0.5 AI which controls it. The 'dangers' of this are often exaggerated, as never has there been a reported case of a ship going rogue and killing its crew for full autonomy like people fear, but most captains prefer a ship that will unquestioningly do their bidding rather than one that has opinions of its own. Ships with an unrestricted Tier 0.5 like Fastrade herself are almost nonexistent.
Fastrade does not usually take on a physical manifestation of any sort. Most of the time, to the crew, she is only a disembodied voice capable of speaking through any part of the ship. On the bridge, however, she has a few options for how to appear in her chosen form: she technically has the ability to use the deck's hologram system to project a ghostly, semitransparent body, though she usually avoids this as it takes up more computing power than she'd like and is a bit glitchy; she's capable of directly manipulating and distorting the visual field of anyone kind enough to hook into a low level of the DNI, which is her preferred method as it doesn't involve the clumsiness of a physical form; and Palva has also given her the opportunity to inhabit a robotic 'shell' of a body, which, while rather fragile, can morph into almost anything that does not exceed a certain surface area and is covered in a stretchy rubber-like material whose color and texture Fastrade can change at will. This final form can technically traverse the ship, unlike the other two options. Though this isn't as useful as you'd think it is seeing as Fastrade is the ship itself, it can help with repair jobs and troubleshooting (sometimes literally, hah) when necessary.
