I can take to the sky, even without wings. Cold wind weaves through my fur like millions of snakes in the air as I soar up towards the clouds. I like that analogy, I decide, staring at the fairy fauna like myself milling about below. Our species is quite funny; though we have wings, we're always sneaking about the fat toadstools and climbing through tree branches. I suppose most of us want to be "closer to nature". Hogwash, that's what I say.
My hat smacks about in the wind. A hole in it lets frosty air near my head. But I don't care; I have something to do this Halloween night.
I grin as I pass through my part of the forest, which is blanketed with carpet moss and overgrown with fat red fairy-tale toadstools. I know exactly what is ahead: a land of harsh wind, bracken, stark black trees. The wind is growing colder even now. Not long to the destination, I remind myself.
There is no time for idle thoughts. I grit my teeth and narrow my eyes as I accelerate. I'm already here, I'm here in this strange, empty land. Rumor has it that witches made the forest here bare, but I don't believe it. I think angels set aside this desolate part of the forest just for everyone who wants a moment of quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the forest - especially Copper and I.
I alight on a knotted branch. It is weak; it dips under my weight and a sinister crack sounds. "Oh God!" I shout, adrenaline gripping my brain in its claw. I clutch my hat to my head, breathing hard, knees buckling. The night sky whirls over my head as I drop to my knees on the branch, shaking.
"Enough of that, darlin'," someone calls. A thick voice with the accent of someone from Hell's Swamp to the west.
"Copper?" I ask, but I already know it's her.
"You're shakin' like a twig, let me help you up," her voice turns soft. She's plump and copper-hued, smiling at me from further back on the branch. She flutters towards me on her wide golden wings. Copper is very pretty tonight.
Once she's helped me to a safe part of a tree - the very top, where the great dome of the sky is in full view - Copper and I lie down next to each other. She barely brushes against me, and she stares up at the stars with big eyes like molten gold. Am I getting too poetic? Yes, I am. Sorry.
I just smile as I stare at first the treetops directly surrounding us, barren black things in the middle of a lush forest, then up to the sky. Wispy clouds trek sluggishly across the great twilight dome. Stars gleam overhead, stretching down to the earth until they blur with the treetops. The wide yellowish moon spies on us from behind another cloud.
In the silence, I take Copper's paw in mine. She smiles.
Okay, that's my weird story thing! I'm sorry that it's a bit of a mess; I haven't revised it in the least.
Good luck everyone and have a nice day!
