I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION: Algebra I
YOUR QUESTION:We got some busywork from our substitute, and it included some things that we weren't taught yet. The substitute told us to take it home, and since I don't want to get anything marked wrong (even if we haven't learned it) I've decided to just teach myself it... with help from this thread.
I'm currently on inequalities and the question I have is absolute value in inequalities and multiple <,> signs in one problem, among other things.
The problems in question:
I r + 3 I ≥ 7 (The "I" are absolute value signs)
I 6q + 9 I ≤ 9
- 9 < 3n < 18
-3 < 5c + 7 < 22
-6b > 42 or 4b > -4
2 I d + 5 I -1 < 3

and then there are other problems similar, but if someone can help me solve those ^^^ then I'm sure I can solve the rest myself. Thanks!

Nevermind, my sister helped! Thank you :D

The definition of a function is "a relation with only one, separate output for every input". This means that every x-value must have only one y-value. Take a look at your number set - 1. are there any duplicate x-values? 2. if there are, do they correspond to different y-values? Since there's no duplicate x-values, this must be a function, and your answer should be C.

for this question, the confusion component is the notation. try and simplify it for yourself:

instead of notating p(x) like this:

p(x) = (r - c)(x)

try this instead:

p(x) = r(x) - c(x)

they mean the same thing! now substitute r(x) and c(x) into your equation:

p(x) = 18x - (5x + 20)

distribute the sign:

p(x) = 18x - 5x - 20

and simplify:

p(x) = 13x - 20

the answer, then, is D. please let me know if any of that is confusing!

to answer this you need to know how many times more spotted cat there are for it to go from 2 to 12 and then times the striped cat by the same multiple, so in this case there are 6 times more cats in the second situation (because 12 divided by 2 is 6) so you times the striped cats (5) by 6 as well getting 30 striped cats.
hope this helped

You just need to set up a simple equality here. Let's say x = striped cats, your unknown.

A ratio (2:5) is the same as a fraction.

2/5 = 12/x
OR
5/2 = x/12

Either ratio is fine to solve for, as long as you make sure you have spotted cats either both in the numerator or denominator, but not mixed one or the other.

Now you can solve for x.
