I never really see the point of saying "I'm a furry", though most of my friends have seen my art. Even new friends will come over, and I'm just doodling on my computer. They will look over, and ask a few questions. Nothing major though, it seems to have went well on my end. However, I never really draw anthro-art in a public place other then college or library. When I was back in high school and middle school, I was more of a writer so I didn't have any issues. The only time I've ever been teased for being 'furry', was one of my friends who saw my art. He was just trying to be funny, but I decided he needed a full indepth lesson about his misconception about furries. He actually came away from it quite informed, and never really teased me again about it. Then again, we are open-minded adults. XD Teenage years can be tough.

However, I did experience some issues back in middle school. My friend was a realist artist, and enjoyed drawing artistic female nudes. She was quite talented, and I always asked her for some drawing advice even though I barely drew at the time. So when people in class saw that, the comments were just plain vicious. They accused her of being a lesbian, making comments that it defiantly wasn't her body {since she had a big frame} and asking if I was her lesbian lover and I was the one posing for it. Then making comments that the curves were too big for it to be me. In the end, I just learned people can be cruel for no good reason. Which is why I am glad to be older, adults might be thinking such cruel or vicious thoughts but usually will not slap it in your face.

Also, I would like to share the anthro design I am making for my half of the art trade. I am quite proud of the end result, yet the design is still not quite done. Will probably add a few more markings, though nothing major. I can't help but making for 'natural'-like and simple designs.

I've been in the fandom a long time too, and yeah, there are some people that are just...making a bad name for everyone else. But the same goes for anything that can be on the internet. Internet dating, Craigslist unmentionables, I mean, I've seen adult rated guitar hero fanart. (I mean really?? C'mon internet...)

If you want to come out to the people you care about it, go for it. My parents know nothing about the fandom, but they know I've been doing furry art since we had dial-up. I have a few RL friends in the fandom, but not many. I don't talk about it with my work friends, and fortunately my boyfriend could care less (I mean, we have a kid, and a house to take care of, it's not like he's going to be preoccupied with something that is already part of who I've been the whole time we've been together).

(Heck, my BOSS commissioned me for artwork, and she doesn't ask, and I don't explain)
Even so, I see wibeke's point. If they aren't someone who you would tell your gender preferences to, I wouldn't tell them I was a furry. If someone ASKS me, sometimes I'll talk about it, sometimes I just ignore them. But to be honest, no one has asked me since I was in High School.

Long story short:
Me personally?
My parents know, I guess. I never explained it.
I told my boyfriend after we'd been together for a few years.
I just don't talk about it. I don't hide it, but I don't talk about it.

Bah, I used to be ZOMG IM FUR ACCEPT IT.

That turned out bad.
So I let it die down and now it's a don;t as don't tell thing.

My boyfriend found out because when I first met him, I was sketching fuzzbutts and he asked if I was fur. I said "kinda."

I normally tell people I'm a furry and an Anime freak when they have been around me for a while since I rant about Anime and manga alot. Also my freinds who are also furries call me by the name of my Fursona. I have never been looked down on for being a furry yet, my grandma doesn't really care, my dad is interested in it and looks at it as a creative and expressive thing and my mom doesn't mind she's just a little skeptical about me getting a fursuit but I don't have it yet so we'll see. I'm very comfortable with being a furry and can openly say that yes I have and am right now Rping porn. I have seen it as well but it's not really my forte. I draw furries heads but I'm not that good yet. My sketchbook is mine and I don't really let any look in it even though there isn't anything graphic. I am not in a good place to go to conventions but one day I will. Anywho those are my opinions and such

I've made it a personal rule not to shove my fandoms into others' faces. People have done it to me before and it just feels... I don't know, uncomfortable, I guess? So yeah, I don't go around shouting "I'M A FURRY" because people WILL get the wrong impression. I have never started to run around screaming it, but I know what others think of furries and how a lot of it is true to a select bunch of furries. And it isn't just a select few, for the record; lots of furries have kinks that are rather unmentionable here (and should stay that way). I can name about five people I've met-- even on this site-- off the top of my head with err... kinks. And I can think of a lot more than that if I want to.

Because so many furries DO have those otherwise strange and unaccepted-by-society interests, it's believed by many that all furries are going to be this way. Jokes in the media don't help clear many furries' reputations (though if you're good at laughing at yourself they can be funny, but anyways that's way besides the point I'm trying to get across).

Don't ask, don't tell. Well, perhaps that rule doesn't completely fit here-- sure, it's okay to tell close friends if they ask sometimes. Sure, if it's just a few people who you know can accept you for it, but the bottom line is, don't try to make a giant deal out of it when you're telling someone you're a furry. NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW.

Some people find it hard to realize that a huge part of the fandom continues to be slandered and ridiculed by others because of those people screaming "DON'T MAKE FUN OF ME I'M A FURRY I'M UNIQUE WOOF WOOF HOWWWWWLLL I LIKE DRAWING I'M MORE UNIQUE THAN YOU".

This. I know that I am being spammy and whatnot, but this needs to be on every furry site ever. If everyone skims over everything and forgets everything else, just remember this.

Because I'm a furry, and when someone does that, I think it is seriously irritating. It just always ends with some people starting drama, flamewarring themselves into a corner and a bunch of people going "I'm gayer than you because I get my manicure on mondays" but really...

Everyone is unique, furry or not. And just being irritating is a good way to get on anyone's bad side, especially people who already believe the media like it is gospel.

to me telling people you're a furry like it's a big deal, is akin to making a big deal out of the fact that you like the color blue etc. imagine this:

You: (taps friend/brother/sister/mom/dad/boyfriend/girlfriend whatever on the shoulder* "Hey, I need to talk to you about something."
Them: "What is it? Is something wrong?"
You: "no, it's just I, well, I like the color blue"
Them: ... wth? o-o

I understand that being a furry comes with some irritating stereotypes , but so does being a fan of anything really.
Back on CS after a long absence, tons of pre-2012 rares for trade! looking to fill out my collection from the years I've been gone! Check my trade rules for current most-wanteds!

Mirroring the last few sentiments on here, really. If ANY of you manage to go to a furry con (if you haven't already) and Uncle Kage is there, go to his panel on speaking with the public. I'm not horribly fond of the guy all together as I don't understand the adulation that some people tend to pour at his feet, but they guy's very good with PR things.
