Does it ever happen to you that you give a character a last name you found in a pretty popular book assuming that it's a pretty common name but then you find out the author made it up and there's not actually anyone out there named that except that character so you quickly go bury yourself in a hole, find another name, and pretend that never happened
because guess what just happened to me

I've never done that with a last name, but I've gotten close with first names a lot - luckily, I always spend too long on Behind The Name before naming characters, so I realize where it came from before actually giving it to a character.

Oh man, that sucks
I just usually give my characters just really common, mundane names to try to avoid that but I've never really looked too far into it. o3o
i'm just not one of those people who has the patience to come up with some meaning behind a name or anything I'm just like: "huh, yeah, Ben is a good name. Cool."
but i appreciate it so much when other people do put in thought
i'm just a hypocrite oops

Well. Is it the same thing if you make it up yourself? Because I'm pretty sure Lofting isn't an actual, official surname.

Nahh, I make up a lot of my names tbh since most of my character's aren't even human ^>^ made-up names are pretty cool imo

hey would anyone mind giving me some feedback? i rewrote this scene from the first time I wrote it and i'd like some input and criticism owo
"Close your eyes," Zeph instructed, and Ben did so, shutting his eyes to the world around him and breathing in deeply. He exhaled and tried to push his own energy out again, and as he breathed in once more, tried to drag the ends of what he felt must be his uncle’s energy back towards him. Zeph took a deep breath as well, beginning to speak softly in a language that Ben had never heard before; the language of magic and fae. Zeph’s magic focused on the circle, and the circle focused it towards the cup. Ben’s magic focused on Zeph’s. There must have been something though, something that changed, or interacted, or collided, because suddenly Ben’s senses were once again, completely overwhelmed.
The blackness behind his shut eyes lit up, and Ben could see faceless figures laughing and cooking and smiling together, he could hear laughter and silverware clinking gently against plates. He could spell herbs and dust and honey; bread baking in the oven. The energy this time though, didn’t feel intrusive. This time, it only felt strong and different, but pleasant. It felt like his uncle. Ben took in another breath, and this time, felt another presence. There were no overwhelming sensations, but there was a soft buzzing, like the hum of something that wasn’t yet running. And even though Ben had never felt this energy before, not like he had felt Zeph’s, he immediately knew that it was his own. It was dormant, and not taking over the room, but it was there. It was his.
After what felt simultaneously like hours and seconds, the power faded, and Ben felt the energy leave his limbs, leave the room, and the levels returned to normal. Zeph took a step back. Ben opened his eyes.
ah okay so yeah this has no context but it's this part that's really throwing me off so i'd really like some tips or anythign
thanks <3

Alrighty, I need some help. So i'm writing a story but I need to know the genre/themes for it but since there's multiply of it I have to decide between two of them
Here's a very short description of it:
Rain, comes home after ignoring her family and friends for 2 years. She became the talk of the town. But shortly after she comes back, she leaves again. Cher, her little sister decides there is more to this then what meets the eye.
Btw, the characters names are decided by the meaning.
Andrew- Strong
Amika- friendly
Cher- beloved
Rain- gosh, the meaning is obvious but in the story it's a bit different.
and etc.
And here are the themes/genres are I have to choose between (choose 2):
1. Mystery
2. Romance
3. Life
4. Friends
5. Family

Everyone's asking quetions . . . .
@CC I'm sorry, but my brain is a little fried in the critique department right now. Maybe I'll come back later and have something to say, but for the moment I'm out.
@Dove, I pick . . . . mystery.
@julie, write/draw about someone who goes through in an accident that involves them losing a lot of blood, and they have to go to the hospital. However, somehow they end up with the blood from some mythological being (like a griffin or a banshee or something with wings). Then, a little bit later after they've been discharged, they're talking or interacting with their group and something surprises them into jerking back, and wings pop out of their back so that they're hovering a little above the ground.
