Writing Prompt (Owners): Picking a Pumpkin
Aislinn scowled into the phone, ignoring the fact that the other Sheer was unable to see it. "What do you mean I don't get the day off?" she complained. "It's Halloween. I should totally get it off."
Her boss, Chanua, sighed on the other end of the line. "Look, I don't really care. We're stretched thin as it is and I can't afford to let you off for some imbecilic children's holiday so you can play dress-up. You'll be able to play your games anyway, your shift ends hours before dark and no one will be trick-or-treating before then."
Aislinn huffed sullenly, refusing to answer him as she watched her son instead. Bee had been adorably excited when she'd announced that they'd be going to the pumpkin patch, and he now darted back and forth between pumpkins, trying to decide which one was best. Aislinn couldn't really afford a pumpkin the size of the ones he was looking at, but she would let him have this. She'd just have to go without her Starbucks for a month or two.
In the background, Chanua had started griping again. Aislinn absently tuned back into the sound of his voice. "-don't even know why I keep you around," he was saying. "You're one of my worst employees, constantly disrespectful and unprofessional in the workplace, and you always throw paper at me. That's so incredibly immature, I can't-"
Aislinn stopped listening and squinted into the distance. Beethoven had stopped running around and was waving her over. "I have to go," she interrupted Chanua's angry ranting. "See ya after Halloween." Ignoring her boss's incredulous sputtering, Aislinn hung up and slipped the phone into her pocket. She'd make it up to him later, probably with a coffee or two. For the moment, she jogged over to where Beethoven was standing, hugging her jacket closer to her body.
"Dang, it's cold," she panted, skidding to a stop next to her son. "So, whatcha find?"
Bee smiled proudly up at her, actually looking his age for once. "I found the perfect pumpkin," he told her earnestly. "Look!"
Aislinn crouched down to inspect the pumpkin. It was indeed a very nice pumpkin; round and orange, with no spots or bruises. It was also very large and would probably eat an enormous hole in her wallet. Do it for the kid, Aislinn reminded herself. "Well, that is one nice-looking pumpkin," she observed. "And do you know, I think it's the perfect one." She met Bee's eyes with a grin, soaking in the elated look on his face. Definitely worth it.
