Messenger Birds

The date is the 21st of May, 1916, and human conflict rages on.
The reason being the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914.
Though, that is not what we'll be focusing on, but on a very particular asset of the first World War.

Messenger birds.

Avian beings 'hired' and trained to deliver critical and urgent messages, letters and other strategic resources during the Great World War I.
Their sore purpose, in their own minds, was to survive, and accomplish whatever tasks their trainers gave them.
It was either that, or being scorched, shot, or another terrible fate given by the many conflicts that took place in their very homelands.

Now, take your role, and get going, soldier.

Peregrine Falcons.

Few were enlisted in the USA'S training program for messenger birds.
Nyra was one of those few, and she loved her work, despite the fact it was a very dangerous one.
She'd never gotten to deliver something yet, but just going through training and handling...

She already loved it.

The she-bird was currently being handled by her own falconer, who happened to be chatting calmly with his compatriots, something she didn't mind, however, another handler joins in on the conversation, his own bird in hand as well, to which Nyra gives a fond smile.

"Hi there!"

She calls out to the other avian being, hoping to get a greeting in return as well.

(Feel free to choose whatever bird you'd like as well.
However, if you'd like romance, you'll have to choose a falcon as well.)

The male falcon lifted one of his claws to mimic a wave. He was quite shy. He didn't want to speak.

All of this training was new to him. He didn't really like it that much, but he put up with it.

(I'm not used to skipping lines and such, so if I use it incorrectly, point it out. Also, English isn't my native language but I speak it fluently. So if my grammar or one of my words is badly used, that is why.)

(It's okay, and by the way, not to sound rude or anything, birds don't exactly wave, and if they did, they'd use their wings.
Body language such as waving, can be replaced by calls or cries. Affection to mates, would consist of wraping a wing over the other {usually, the male's the one that does the wrapping). When they're speaking to each other, they obviously do it in their own language, so all that human ears hear, are squawks and screeches.
Just a few examples, I'm not scolding you at all, and don't worry!
I'm not native at all, so I can commit mistakes too!)

Nyra tilts her head in confusion.
'A wave?'
She thinks, wondering if she had said something wrong to receive nothing but such gesture.

However, hoping to lift the mood, she adds, jokingly.

"Cat got your tongue or something, dear?"

The falcon shook his head slowly.

"Not really in the mood to talk today. Sorry." He talked only a bit louder than a whisper.

Nyra frowns, this time a little discouraged

"Oh, okay."

'Shoot'
The bird of prey thinks, she was just about to tell the other falcon about how excited she was about going out to the field, before practically being silence by her male counterpart. She prefers to remain silent, after that.

In the meantime, their handles continue to chat and laugh, spilling out fowl words and other typical american behavior.
