outgrown childhood fear: bathophobia - fear of depth
it was never heights that bothered him, as much as the feeling of depth, of solid ground dropping away from his paws and disappearing, of staring out into oblivion that stretched out for ever. he was terrified of falling into this depth, of sinking for ever and never reaching the bottom. he had nightmares. lots of nightmares, when he'd wake up shaking and shivering and certain his body was still sinking through an endless ocean.
however, this all changed when, through a friend of a friend of a friend, he was invited for free scuba diving lessons. at first, he was terrified, clinging to the boat and refusing to dip his head beneath the surface. however, when reassured that the water was shallow, he'd be fine, and given a lifejacket, he dared to look, and found himself... amazed. he'd never realised how beautiful the water was - shimmering and glittering and so incredibly blue. he gradually became more comfortable in the water, and realised that his irrational fear was just that. he now spends his time studying and keeping tropical fish, and is a keen campaigner for protecting coral reefs!
personality: despite outgrowing his childhood fear, skippy still has a youthful enthusiasm and curiosity in life.
