It was about two months after that night when Veteran had gotten shot when he finally arrived off of the army freighter. His right leg was heavily bandaged and still caused him a little pain when he moved it. He heard that there was a doctor that owned a stables that could give him some therapy to help him be able to walk and move normal again. He was sad to leave the army even after they awarded him with a Medal of Honor or whatever it was.
Its going to be ok. His brother's last words still hung on to him even after so much time apart from his brother. It had been what? Five? Six years? Veteran couldn't remember. He was older now and he severely missed his brother. He wondered if he was ok and if he had found a home that was willing to love and care for him.
The stallion was coaxed into a big comfortable trailer and locked in. He was on his way to a new place. A new home. A new adventure.

Renegade was grazing quietly at the border dividing the stables.
Lately his curiosity had been piqued by the horses on the other side of the fence.
He still thought about his brother a lot, but was resigned to the fact that they might not meet again any time soon. Someday maybe, but not too soon.
For now he was focused on trying to fit in to his new home.
It had been years since he was brought to Rosewood, but he still felt a bit out of place, not really belonging to a herd and having only one friend.
But the mare Bella was very sweet and had been kind to him. She was a quiet horse for sure, the sort one couldn't help but feel they had to protect. Just the type of mare Renegade pictured Veteran with.
As he grazed Renegade wondered for just a moment if there was a mare out there for him. Maybe not quiet like Bella, but feisty. One who could give him a challenge.

The truck arrived at the stables a couple days later. He was laying down in the back since his leg hurt too much to stand. It wasn't long before the door swung open and light filtered in. A palomino head popped in and was quickly pushed out by a human girl. The stallion couldn't help, but laugh. The palomino he had briefly seen reminded him of Renegade. Oh how he missed his brother.
The woman helped him to his hooves and carefully lead him out. He stopped and looked around at the field of grass around him. It had been so long since he had seen such wonderful, beautiful vegetation. The stallion laid down and rolled onto his back in the grass to enjoy the feeling and the scent of it. The horse he had seen earlier snorted and chuckled. The horse was a filly! No wonder she was curious.
He rolled over and was met by a muzzle. He sighed and nudged the filly away. What an odd little girl.

Firefly was curious as to who her owner brought home this time. The moment the door was open she poked her head through and was appalled to see a horse that looked similar to her secret crush. Could it be that the two were related? She would need to check his scent.
After letting the stallion roll in the grass, she stuck her nose in his face and took in a deep breath. He smelled of gunpowder. Such a scary smell. She bucked and ran off to the fence line that separates Artillery from Rosewood. She would rather be away from that smell than near it.
Firefly gazed over the fence at the sable champagne stallion and sighed. How could she ever tell him that she was falling in love with him? Perhaps Firefly needed to give him some sass or an indication that she wanted him to pursue her. The mare pawed at the ground and flattened her ears. How dare he ignore her.

Renegade heard pawing and looked over. He was surprised to see the palomino paint filly standing there looking very annoyed. As a matter of fact, she looked almost angry.
"Somethin' wrong?" He asked.


Bella saw the filly next door looking irritated and casually wandered over that way, wondering about the truck she had seen pass earlier, and this sudden show of irritation from the filly who was usually so busy mooning she didn't do much of anything else.

Veteran thought he heard his brother's voice, but decided that there was no way he had heard it. He was at a retirement stables for combat horses. There was no way his brother was here. He was probably in some pasture with some beautiful mares drooling all over him. Veteran snorted. How absurd.
Veteran never really had time for a mate. He was usually busy with his brother or the military...or use to be. What was he suppose to do with his life now that he was retired and his brother was gone?
That was when he noticed the filly point him out and seemed to be snipping at an all-to-familiar stallion. He chuckled at her last comment and laid his head back against the grass and closed his eyes. His muzzle was deep in the blades and Veteran's face was barely visible. "Still getting in trouble, I see."

The Tabiano filly rolled her eyes. "Oh now you pay attention to me." she snorted irritatedly. Firefly flicked her tail and narrowed her eyes at the stallion and laid his ears back. She flicked her forelock out of her eyes and indicated the stallion next to her. "At least he has the common curtesy to acknowledge my existence. You would just rather I didn't exist. Am I not good enough?"

Bella sighed softly. "You should speak to her. I think she likes you," she whispered softly to Renegade.


Renegade chuckled softly. "Want to know the truth, she makes me nervous."



Bella watched Renegade with disbelief.
"Nervous? I would have thought a retired war horse would have the courage to face one pretty young filly."


Renegade chuckled again. Sometimes Bella seemed to know exactly what to say to get him to do something.
"Alright, alright."
He lifted his head and faced the paint filly.
"Good day."

Veteran chuckled. It was completely like his brother to ignore him entirely for a pretty girl. He sighed and rolled onto his side and sighed. So comfortable....perhaps....a small nap...

Firefly sighed and cocked her head a little. "Well hi to you too. Took you long enough to finally say something to me." May as well give him sass....he deserves it.

Well, well . . .
"I am sorry for any signs of neglect I may have showed you," Renegade replied with one eye half closed. "I was simply biding my time."


Bella rolled her eyes.
Goof.
She noticed the new stallion and glanced at him once, then twice. He kind of looked like Renegade, but if they were related why wasn't Renegade noticing him?

Firefly puffed out a breath and sighed. May as well call his bluff. He is cute. The tabiano mare pawed the ground playfully. "Biding your time, huh? Well, I hope it was worth the wait then. You could have missed out on some fun. Do you know how to jump over a fence?"

He chuckled. "Can a fish swim?"
