Its called The Theif Lord, by Cornelia Funke. The book takes place in Venance Italy. It is about orphaned and runaway children living in an abandoned theatre. The one who takes care of them (showed them the place, gave them stuff to sell ect.) is called Scipio, aka, The Thief Lord.
