I've wondered, What time period is the show supposed to be in? I'm thinking modern and if so, Do you think any humans have tried to make weapons like the gems?

the show is set in a modern-day era. i think the show started in 2013/late 2013 (since that's when the show itself aired. some shows usually have their set time/day/year because of what year it is when released). we know at least one year has passed (i'm pretty sure).
but as per the electronics in the show - a gameboy wouldn't be a far stretch. stevenjust might have some really fun games on their and he's content with what he has. phones - connie's original phone was a flip phone, which was probably given to her by her parents (it haven been one of theirs, maybe?). she later gets a phone that resembles an iphone or samsaung, so it's safe to say the show is somewhere in the range of maybe 2014-2015 or maybe even 2016.

to be honest though i just want an episode saying what year it is. we know it's sometime after steven's birthday (which is in august *this has been confirmed by rebecca herself*) but like

Not only that, but when Peridot is shown typing "Am I having fun" on her tablet, you can clearly see it says "Google"

I think two years have passed (that we know of), actually, since we've had two birthday episodes for Steven (So Many Birthdays for s1 and Steven's Birthday in s2), and I'm guessing that there could be another birthday episode in s4, but nothing is solid with that right now (that I know of).
