Riley had always held a deep admiration for all things associated with the word flight. Anything that could tame the wind under its wings had Riley’s full attention, gaze always tilted upward with wonder and want. As a child they held tight to dreams of being a pilot, and so their first trip on a plane was a day they knew they’d keep sacred all their life. They’d waited eagerly for the moment they’d be lifted into the sky, but that day had not gone quite as expected.

The entire ride Riley had been a ball of nervous excitement, bouncing restlessly in their seat. For an hour they rambled on about the beauties of aviation, a rant they’d gone on many times before. Medli and Mona had quietly indulged their chattering, but Ryan made a point to periodically remind them they’d already told the same story ‘fifteen times'.

Upon arrival at the airport Riley was the first to exit the car, making quick work of unloading everything and urging their family to move as swiftly as possible. Once inside they couldn’t contain a squeal of enthusiasm, enthralled with the fast pace atmosphere of the airport. From their perspective everything was simply magnificent, and by the time they were seated Riley looked ready to burst.

“I don’t get why you’re so excited” Ryan huffed.

Riley ignored him, turning to Mona instead.

“Are you ready?” They asked, grinning widely.

“Y-yes” she replied meekly, her own smile more subtle but certainly just as happy.

When the plane made it’s way down the runway and nosed off the ground, Riley peered eagerly out the window to watch the world disappear beneath them.

What they saw did not supply the enlightened feeling they expected, and instead they were hit with something shocking- fear. The kind of fear you feel when you get stuck on a toilet and realize there’s no tissue, and then you see a beast of a spider that had not existed moments before slowly lowering itself from the ceiling right above your head.

“Uh, are you ok?” Ryan said from the side, noticing Riley had gone stiff,” You look like you’re about to pee yourself.”

Riley tore their gaze away from the window, breaking some sort of spell they hadn’t realized they’d fallen victim to.

“S-s-shut u-u-up” there was no bite in the wobbly words. The only thing that stopped Riley was breaking down was a single thread of pride, unwilling to let their brother see them cry. Ryan appeared more concerned than amused, so when Riley requested to swap seats Ryan didn’t comment.

For the rest of the flight Riley was uncharacteristically quiet, refusing to so much as glance at the window. When they landed Riley was the first to rush off the plane, the sick knots in their stomach finally easing up. By the time they got their luggage Riley was faced with a terrible thought; how could they ever become a pilot if they were to afraid to fly?

Riley’s dream was at first to be a pilot; that was, until they discovered their incurable fear of heights. They swore then that one day they would learn to overcome their fears, but until then they needed a backup to pursue until they could take to the skies themself. They decided that designing and building planes was just as exciting as the idea of flying one, and so they set out with the intention to do just that. However, getting into the plane making business was not as easy as they expected. Perhaps if they had spent a little more time researching and a little less time day dreaming they would have realized the difficulty of achieving their dream occupation: an occupation which required more of them than had been expected.

So, as of now they opt to instead work for a hot air balloon company where they design custom balloons for people who have enough money to spend on that kind of thing. Riley thinks it’s a fun job, and the people they work with are all creative in their own ways. So far they’ve learned a lot but they hope to one day work with planes instead of balloons, and even further down the road they still want to fly aircrafts themself. Until then they’re building up their experience and studying as much as possible, doing their best to master the science behind flight.

August - Father - Decent relationship, some strain due to confused feelings over August's other family

Riley has a complicated relationship with August. On one hand they have an honest appreciation for the blunt and straightforward nature he posses, but on the other hand his strict attitude can be a bit off-putting. There have been moments they’ve shared that Riley holds dear, such as the times August has let loose a little and indulged in a more playful side of himself, but for the most part Riley finds themself confused when thinking of their father. They’re not exactly upset with the fact that he has another family, but they can feel a bit insecure when wondering if August cares more about his family with Reaver then he does Riley and their siblings.

Medli - Parent - Strong relationship, spend a fair amount of time together and very close

Medli is someone who Riley loves dearly, even if the two are quite different. You could go as far as to push the idea that they are opposites, but if that’s true then the saying ‘opposites attract’ is completely valid. Where Medli rarely talks Riley can almost never stop speaking, and where Medli appreciates tranquility Riley can not live without a sense of anticipation always looming over them. It would seem the only trait they share is a love for adventure, but that in itself is strong enough to knit them tightly together. Riley always has the best fun when out and about with Medli, and they’re great admiration for their parent means they share a very close bond.

Mona - Sister - Good relationship, strong sibling bond between them

Admittedly Riley finds Mona to be absolutely adorable. Though they’re the same age Riley often likes to take on the roll of the elder sibling, trying to always be there to guide Mona around unfamiliar places. Ever since they were children Riley has stuck close to their sister, feeling a fierce need to protect her from anything that might cause her grief. Now that they’ve grown up some Riley doesn't experience the urge to dot quite as much as they did before but still comes around often. It’s not uncommon for Riley to visit the coffee shop Mona works at, sitting near the counter on slow days and listening to Mona babble about whatever crazy story she wants to share.

Ryan - Brother - Casual/Fun relationship, not overly close emotionally but have a good time together

Riley and Ryan are infamous for possibly being the most affective duo to ever terrorize their hometown. When they were younger Riley always though of Ryan as annoying, especially when he constantly picked at them for everything under the sun. However, when Ryan finally succeeded in dragging Riley into his schemes Riley realized just how fun it was. Trickery and drama provided an abundance of entertainment and excitement, and the more secrets Riley learned about people the more they wanted to know. When the pair went their separate ways for college they decided to end their reign of terror, but every time they get together you can be sure trouble will soon commence.

Bailey Elizabeth - Half-sibling - Decent relationship, not overly close but on good terms

Riley actually likes Bailey Elizabeth quite a bit, which is odd considering their more distant nature with their dad’s other family. They find themself drawn to Bailey Elizabeth’s confidence and think of it similar to their own. Her attitude also makes her fun for them to hang around her and Riley can honestly say they have a good time when they talk to her. Because Riley doesn't often go out of their way to visit they don’t exactly see a lot of Bailey Elizabeth, but they take comfort to know that when they do go over to see their dad that there will be someone entertaining there to converse with.

Finch - Half-sibling - Complicated relationship, not close but not on bad terms

Finch is someone who Riley often finds themself curious about, but doesn't often try to better understand her. They feel a little weird around her since they don’t really talk, but Riley finds her photographic memory to be quite amazing. They are quick to agree that Finch is very intelligent, but they also caution others about her passive aggressive nature. She has the type of personality that Riley finds hard to find common ground with, and so they’ve mostly given up on the idea of potentially befriending them. If there was ever a time Finch wanted to reach out to them then they wouldn't mind helping, but Riley really doubts that they'd be someone Finch would feel comfortable seeking help form.

Reaver - Step-father - Complicated relationship, not on bad terms but a bit awkward

Riley isn't exactly sure how they feel about Reaver. They haven’t exactly talked much, nor does Riley feel the need to strike up a conversation when he’s around. From what he can tell he at least makes August happy, so they figure that’s a plus. It can be a little awkward hanging around him but Riley has never outright said anything rude to him (at least not from their perspective). Maybe one day Riley will take more interest in getting to know him but at the moment they mostly just keep to themself whenever Reaver is around.

future job;; journalist, surprisingly, kei isn't the biggest fan of water! his love of literature and creative writing from a young age urged him to find a job having to do with it. reading up on august's food critiques peaked his interest, and at first he wanted to become an author, but medli's love of traveling impacted kieran so much that he decided that he would be a journalist just so he could explore while on his job too. even though he never follows in his father's footsteps, both their interests and jobs help shape kieran's future job choice.

family ties;;
kei is someone who is extremely loyal to his immediate family, always keeping in touch. he would do anything for any of them. though he has his favorites, he loves all of them equally.

august - father
like his dad, kei can tend to look a bit brash at first, but he always means well. with his personality most like august, kei enjoys spending time with him, just passing time by talking and learning to knit. growing up with a food critic, kei has learned a lot about food, drinks and the such, which comes in handy for his job.

medli - father
kieran loves his father medli and enjoys his father's gentle silence. he especially loves when they get to travel. due to medli, kei loves to explore and travel to new places. he especially loves when he can get his father to laugh at a small joke, and loves when he gets medli a book that his father really enjoys. kei would do anything for his father, and visits the beach, even though he dislikes water, just to spend time with him.

ryan - brother
ry and kei are somewhat similar, so they get along pretty well. kei occasionally gets annoyed with his brother's little jabs, but he knows his brother means no harm. keeping ry entertained is quite the task, and kei prefers to not being left with that job, no offence to ryan. aside from jokes, kei adores his little brother more than he lets on, and is extremely fond of him.

mona - sister
due to his sister's personality, kei has grown to be very protective of her. he usually just keeps her on his radar, not bothering if unless necessary. if he's being honest, mona is his favorite sibling, because they have been close since birth, and he is always there to comfort and protect his sister from anything. kei also loves stopping by her coffee shop that she works at, just to say hi and brainstorm new articles and stories to write about.

reaver - step father
august is someone that kei has heard a lot about, but is intimidated to talk to him. as a kit, kei has shied away from his step-father, but as he has grown, kieran wishes to know about reaver more. he knows his step-father just wants the best, and kei has never agreed with anything as much as that. kei also appreciates how reaver keeps august happy and wishes the best for his father and his mate.

aubrie - step-sister
kieran doesn't speak to his step-sisters often, but when he does he tries to keep their conversations short, unless it's about literature, of course. he gets the sense that aubrie means well, but her passive aggressiveness doesn't appeal with kei well. kei acknowledges aubrie's knowledge and her photogenic memory, and sometimes they talk about his passion, in which they can talk casually, in an almost friendly manner.

bailey elizabeth - step-sister
bailey elizabeth is someone kei doesn't really like to hang around. her ego seems to be too much for kieran and the tedious task of saying her full name gets on his nerves, but none the less, he acts civil to her. just the fact that she's a beach-y kind of girl, and kei's not that fond of water should tell you that these two do not mix well. even though they don't get along, kei would never want to upset bailey elizabeth on purpose.

this was new. and strange. kieran took a deep breath of the cold air. he let it back out and his exhale turned white in the frigid weather. being around warm weather, kei shivered, thinking back to when he first left his comforting home to come to study english, wanting to become a journalist.

he had never strayed far from his family, but today was the day he became an adult. kei was finally going off to college. the mere thought of it made his stomach turn, but he was excited for it. his mind went back to his family, waving him goodbye at the airport. kei hugged everyone, and he hated to admit it, but he shed a few tears. ruffling ryan's soft hair one last time, and kissing mona's cheek as she sullenly let go of his arm.

"g-good luck i-in college, and d-don't forget to visit us," mona said, while ryan jumped up and down, tugging on kei's sleeve.

"yeah, you better visit us okay?" he exclaimed excitedly while kieran tiredly nodded, a fond smile on his lips.

he looked at his fathers, and he hoped without words, they would understand that he wanted to thank them for everything. his childhood and troubled teenage ages were now over and he was supposed to go off alone.

i'll call you all, he promised, running off the gate where he would board his plane. this was adulthood, and he would embrace it.

sure he was scared, and he would be lost without his family, but he knew they would always be there, a phone call away, or even a plane ride away. his knew for certain his family would never be torn apart.

he always sent them the projects he worked on, wether it be a newspaper, magazine, or even just anything random. kei always awaited on what his family had to say about his writings, and he was always showered with compliments. everything he wrote, he always did with a soft smile, knowing his family would read those words.

college was going great, he couldn't be anymore happier, and he especially couldn't wait for his next break.
