ALEC

Alec followed his companion down the long passageway, pretending he couldn't hear her slightly irritating singing. "I wonder what would happen if we entered one of those 'die then ascend' springs?" he remarked, mostly to himself. The sound slowly became clearer, although it remained too hazy to tell what exactly it was. He'd thought most of this planet's water was contained in the atmosphere, though? Could there be more than the scanners had picked up down here? In that case, it would be a great asset to the humans' survival... unless the water reservoirs attracted other creatures? Edible creatures, perhaps?
The AI was nearly too immersed in his thinking- he was still too used to the extra data available in the ship's mainframe- to notice when the tunnel opened up into a large cavern, glowing softly with light from its lichens. Several tunnels branched off at the end, but the most interesting feature of the cave had to be the huge, luminescent lake spanning nearly the whole area. Water trickled down from cracks in the stone, and he could see a river heading off into one of the tunnels on the lake's other shore. "Whoa. Minnie? Do you happen to be waterproof or something?"

(Ahhh sorry this is so late, Infected... I got major writer's block for this segment... so sorry.)

"Why would I be waterproof?" Minerva asked, a little irked at Alec's new nickname for her. She'd have to get him back for that. "I'm a repair drone, not a submarine. The sight was breathtaking, but there was also something off about it. Neither AI had seen a large body of water up close before, but Minerva had seen enough pictures to know that this water didn't look right. Curious, she buzzed closer to the lake to get a better look. Sure enough, she was right. "Hey Allie," she said, "I'm not sure this is water. Look." Dipping a manipulator into the liquid, Minerva pulled up a handful, letting it run through her armatures. It fell smoothly, not even making a splash as it landed. It flowed more like oil than water. To top it all off, the glow it produced didn't appear to be the product of some algae or other. The liquid itself luminesced. "I'm not sure what this stuff is," she said, "but maybe we should get a sample of it, to take back to the humans. Maybe Wes can get the bio scanners from the medbay back online."

ALEC

Alec watched curiously as Minerva demonstrated the irregular properties of the liquid before them, remembering idly that oil sometimes produced a rainbow spectrum in the light. This looked similar; she was probably right. "Fine by me. Are we equipped with containers or something?" Granted, this was information he should have been able to figure out himself, but it was Day 1 of existing in the physical realm, and he hadn't gotten around to checking out all his traits yet. "Wait, I think this stuff could be acidic. The lake floor looks smooth, like, unnaturally smooth. Sure your hand's not gonna corrode and fall off later?" He moved nearer to the shore, to observe the "water"'s strange properties closer up. Not too close, though, wasn't gonna take his chances with that pH level.

"You probably don't, Sir Scrapheap," Minerva said, "but I do. Wes went a little nuts making me, you'd be surprised at what I've got in here. A thin tube snaked out of one of the Owl's manipulators, vacuuming up a small portion of the liquid. "Might want to figure out what you do have, though, maybe she gave you a rocket launcher or something. Oh, and if this stuff was acidic, that floor would be a lot less smooth. Rock is made of a bunch of different stuff, most of which reacts at different speeds. That's either plain old erosion, or this is an alien hot tub." Now all they needed was a chemical analyzer and a scientist who knew how to run it. Hopefully one of those survived. "So what now?" She asked. "Keep going, or try one of the other tunnels?"

Rikimaru had been trying not to listen into the conversation, but they had managed to happen to hear it while they were staring into the shelter module. Not that they were paying attention.
They buried their face into Monty's fur, staring into nothing with their eyes shut and feeling an empty numbness.
Monty whimpered, sensing something was wrong.

Shifting awkwardly, Icarus gave the monitors one last check before turning to leave the shelter. He brushed past Rikimaru wordlessly, cold blue eyes meeting theirs for a mere second before Icarus had passed. Once out of the shelter, Icarus stopped, realising he didn't exactly have a reason for being outside. Pushing the logical thoughts aside, Icarus continued forward, towards the edge of the makeshift camp. A small hill stood there, which Icarus soon reached the top of and simply stood on, staring blankly out towards the horizon. He had watched plenty of patients die before and had continued his life without regrets, but this... This was different. This was the captain's son, and to make matters worse, Icarus lacked the means to save him. Reinen's fate could only be told by time now.

Rikimaru looked up as Icarus walked past and watched him walk away. "This isn't good, Monty baby." They mumbled dryly to their dog. They still weren't sure what they felt towards Reinen or why the... event... occurred, but they knew for certain they didn't want him dead. Their head felt foggy as they absently pet Monty, feeling his soft fur in between their fingers.

Icarus felt sick with anxiety. If Reinen died, would the crew blame him? After all, he was the one who was supposed to be the doctor. The one who was supposed to fix people when they were hurt. If Reinen died, Icarus didn't see why the crew wouldn't blame him. And if, or once in Icarus' mind, they did, then Icarus was sure he'd be better off dead. Once they started blaming him for the captain's son's death, he might as well just go let one of the strange creatures on this planet eat him. Icarus sighed, fidgeting nervously as he stared out into the vast expanse of the planet. It was very unlike him to be nervous, but in this situation, Icarus couldn't help but feel anxious. This feeling was unfamiliar to him, and Icarus was sure he didn't like it.

Theo nodded solemnly at the doctor's prognosis. Not good. Not good at all. This wasn't just going to pass, like a cold, and everything would be fine in a day or two. No. Even if Reinen did survive, there would be long term complications. He could lose his ability to walk, to speak, to think. Theo could barely breathe as the thoughts chased each other through his head.
There was nothing he could do.
The doctor had left. Rikimaru had remained. "You don't have to be here," he muttered to his second in command, his voice rough and dry. Why did they stay, anyway? He closed his eyes, his head spun. There was nothing he could do.

Standing atop the small hill, Icarus continued to stare nervously into the distance. After a moment longer of anxious silence, Icarus came back to reality, letting out a sharp breath. He had been able to steady himself out here, and clear his mind, but now it was time to get back to Reinen. If anything happened, and he wasn't there, things might get even worse than they were. Icarus turned, pausing for a moment atop the hill. A slight gust caused his long coat to billow out beside him for a moment, before Icarus finally stopped delaying going back to the shelter. Icarus descended the hill, and headed back into the shelter. He once again brushed silently past Rikimaru, seeming to radiate a cold, tense air. Kneeling back down beside Reinen and checking over the monitors, Icarus adjusted a few settings on several machines. Once he had done everything he could, which wasn't much considering he had only been gone for a couple minutes and not much had changed, Icarus looked back up to the Captain. At this point, there really wasn't much else Icarus could do for Reinen. There was only one thing Icarus had left to consider at this point, one thing that he had known he could do all along but had refrained from informing the captain of due to its effects. The final solution wouldn't save Reinen. Infact, it was sure to kill him.
Usually, when Icarus spoke, his tone and words seemed void of any empathy or understanding of emotion. Now, though, when he spoke, his voice seemed to convey the very meaning of emotion, layered with countless levels of feelings. Sorrow, anxiety, doubt... They were all present, however overpowering them all was the one thing that many considered Icarus to have none of: Empathy.
"I'm sorry, but I can't do any more to save him... At this point, I don't think he'll ever wake up again, if I don't..." Icarus trailed off, before starting again, "I do have one thing left I can do. I can wake him up. So you two can... You know, talk... Say goodbye. If I don't, you might never be able to speak to him again. If I do, though... It'll kill him. He won't be awake for more than five minutes before his body gives out. I can do it, or we can wait and see if things get better... Which at this point, I'm sorry to say, is very unlikely. It's your decision."
