Milo smiled, sitting cross-legged and scooting closer to the bars so he could reach his hand through and hold hers. "It won't come to that," he told her gravely. "Cross my black pirate heart."

Ella took his hand and squeezed his hand. "Its not black. It's the cleanest thin I've seen in a while." she whispered.

This made Milo laugh, and his pointed canines flashed in a grin that was more animal than human. "Well, whatever state of cleanliness it's in, it's still a pirate heart. I need to get off this Navy boat- there's too many people saying 'do this, do that, swab that deck, knot those ropes!' And they tried to make me cook, Ella! You should have seen the look on Cap'n Will's face when the skilly and duff started moving by itself! Crawled right out of the pan and across the floor it did, swear by the Roger."

Ella laughed. "You're much more fit as a pirate." she said. "This navy uniform is getting on my nerves. It ruins your looks." she said. She looked at him, then back at the ceiling.

Milo laughed for a bit, and said quietly, "I'd come in there and kiss you, but Cap'n William took my keys." He paused for a moment, thinking. "By the by, didn't Ingo say she knew a man in the Navy? Her boyfriend, or something?"

"Yeah." Ella said. "Why'd he take your keys?" she asked, sitting up.

Milo shrugged. "They heard us talking- not what we were saying, mind, just our voices- last night, and they know my past. They don't think I'll be able to help you escape without the keys. Like I said, not the smartest fish in the sea."

Ella smiled. "I'm not skinny enough to squeeze through these bars yet." She said. "But maybe if you guys keep feeding me gruel I will." She said. On cue, her stomach started to grumble.

Milo chuckled, then said, "I'll see if I can swipe some food for you. It's gonna be tough, though, 'cause the quartermaster keeps a harsh eye on the food supplies. He'll know if so much as a raisin goes missing."

"You're a pirate. You're good with theivery." Ella laughed. She leaned her head between the bars. Her head had a good chance of getting stuck. She was inches from Milo's face, but kept her head pointed down.
