Okay, that makes sense. I don't know why I was thinking it as only available in the set. Probably because that's usually what happens with the PPS in store pet sets.

Yup I was actually surprised to see it was available separately! In my opinion this is probably one of the reasons why they usually have exclusive pets when one of them is "special" or "different". Having it be exclusive to the packs ensures that it won't be worth a lot less.

Ohhh! Ok. Makes perfect sense then. And I feel much better. I guess I just thought it was a set exclusive because all previous store pet litters with a single PPS outcome had the PPS as a set exclusive only. The Alicorns, Dragon themed Cat linearts, etc.

This was seriously absolutely blowing my mind. lol XD

I wasn't sure where to ask this (this was the only discussion thread I could find), but was this pet once rare?

I've seen a few of them from Dec. 18 and was confused to find out they were uncommon.

nope this pony wasn't rare
but from that litter is Black pony rare for very long time and white pony went up on rare in 2015 (I think)

It's usually asked/discussed in this thread.

Many pets were rare once due to possibly many, many bots joining the site. When they all went inactive, we had about three months of dropping rarities with many pets being uncommon again in 2014.

So this dog might've indeed been rare in 2013.
EDIT: Yes, I found it, this dog was also rare in 2013 c: it dropped back to uncommon in July 2014, mentioned here

Explanation from Nick back then:

The only real way for the rarity of pets to fall is for the number of "active players" to drop, since this is used to work out how many people are competing to collect pets. That's the number of accounts that have logged in within the last year.

In 2013, we had a huge number of accounts sign up and then not do anything in May, June and July (possibly caused by spambots, about 2-3x as many as normal). So when the rarities were updated in the last couple of months, the number of new people who had joined the site in those months this year was about 50% less than the number of accounts that had gone inactive in those months in the previous year, so the count of the number of "active players" over the past 12 months fell for three months in a row. This meant that the "rarity" displayed on all pets fell slightly in those months.

Also, to add: The way the re-releases work is that all litters containing rare pets are available to be adopted. So if there is a rare pet in the litter of mostly uncommon pets, you can get a random pet from that litter with a chance of the rare, so you can end up with an uncommon since it's in that litter. Hence, how you can have a December 18th uncommon.

Also, rarities of adopted pets can go down after the rarity update that happens after Advent. Say you adopted a pet as a rare, it could go down to uncommon with the next update, if there were enough rereleased.
