Elizah + Bailey
"Let me go! Let me go!"
Just outside my cage door there were grunts, both from man and from animal. I opened my eyes groggily and lifted my so I could see what was causing all the noise. The men were carrying a dog down the isle, one holding her waist while the other held her neck and chest. A noisy snort passed through my nostrils and I laid my head back on my paws.
I was one of the only ones that didn't have to share a cage. I was getting along just fine by myself too. No having to share food, no worrying about being attacked in my sleep, no--click! I froze, my green eyes wide in shock at the human at my cage door. It swung open and the dog was tossed in. Just as quickly as the door had opened, it was closed again.
The figure stood up and looked towards me. Her tail was tucked, ears were back, body was shaking, and those odd yellow-green eyes gazed at me in fear.
"Please don't go here. They just cleaned the cages." I said, sounding uninterested as I laid my head back down. She blinked and backed up into the corner, whining softly through her nostrils.
"No no no. This can't be happening. I can't be here!" She cried, cringing against the cold wall. I exhaled a sigh, turned my head towards her, keeping my bored face on. "Just relax."
She nodded once, twice, three times, then slowly lowered herself onto the floor and curled up into a ball. "I didn't do anything wrong. I was just looking for food, I..I--" Another whine came from her.
I forced my eyes closed and exhaled steadily. This was why I didn't want a cage mate. It isn't fun having to deal with another animal's drama. I didn't even deal with my own. I sort of already decided that I was going to die here. I accepted it to. Only the pretty dogs get adopted. Not a mutt like me. One eye peeked open and I found myself staring at her.
She would be gone soon. I should tell her that so she would stop crying. I mean, her eyes would attract anyone's attention. They were so bright. And her coat, so soft, that blend of colors. Even in the darkness she looked... Wait. I blinked and snapped my eyes from her. She would be gone soon, I repeated in my head. I can't get attached. Her eyes aren't that pretty. Her fur might not be as soft as it looks. I once again caught myself staring.
Stop it!
I let out an irritated growl, making her jump up, eyes wide on me. I shook my head once and she curled back, her eyes watching me warily. I dropped my gaze and stayed in my frozen position until the barks and howls died down in the background. Sleep fell over the creatures of this prison. Over everyone. Everyone but me. I soundlessly got to my paws and padded towards the cage door. My nails scratched noisily against the cement floor. I poked my muzzle in between two bars and stared blankly up at the ceiling. That's where the moon should be. My heart ached. I dropped down so I was sitting and flattened my ears to my head. A small, soft, almost silently howl passed my lips. I missed home. I had a kid, a sweet boy who I followed everywhere. I lived on a barn. I could nap on the porch, chase chickens all day, swim in the lake, and end my busy day by laying at my boy's feet in his bed and closing my eyes.
My life was perfect. I didn't do anything wrong. What did I do to deserve this?
The words that are going through every sleeping mind in this cold place. I try to be strong and think that everything will be okay. The boy will come back. He'll put my faded green collar on me once again and I'll never have to be locked up in a cage ever again. I'd be free.
Tears formed in my eyes.
Who was I kidding? I was stuck here forever. I would be here until the day I lay my head down and close my eyes for the last time. I would never leave this please. Never never never never...
"It's okay." I heard a voice from behind me. I turned the other way and blinked the tears from my eyes.
"No." My voice was raspy and low. "For you. But not for me." I heard her footsteps, then the soft rustling of her fur. My breath was right next to me.
"Why do you say that?" She asked, trying the best to meet my eyes. I wouldn't let her. She couldn't see the pain I was in, no one can.
"Because I'm an ugly mutt. You're the perfect pet. People want you. People don't want me." I scratched my claws against the hard ground.
"People want you." She defended. I laughed humorlessly and shook my head.
"If people wanted me, I wouldn't be here."
"Neither would I." I laughed again at her words. This time it had a little more feeling. She cracked a small smile and tried again to meet my eyes. I looked at her with one and she smiled a bit more. "Why are people so mean?" She asked, cocking her head.
I couldn't answer that question. Maybe it was in their blood to be cruel to anything lower than them. I decided to change the subject. "What's your name?" I asked, turning my head a little bit more towards her.
"Elizah." She didn't even hesitate. She smiled and her ears twitched. "What's yours?"
The corner of my mouth quircked up in a half smile. "I'm Bailey."
"Well," Elizah moved a little closer. "I think you and I are going to get along real nicely, Bailey."

She gave him a weak smile and looked down on their one pup, just newly born, a male, Yin was his name. He looked a lot like his father, glowing black eyes and all. She looked down on him, pride in her eyes, as she glanced over towards the other pup that stayed with them. It was a female that had been abandoned by her parents, and Yi and Fier had adopted her into their small family pack without hesitation. She was getting along quite well with Fier, they never fought, they were always with one another. Yi had decided to name her Yin, since her other parents had never named her.
As Fier went to smile back at Yi, everything seemed to happen in a flash. They were sitting out in the open of their territory, their den just a ways off to the right hidden in the shadows. The pups played a game of tag in front of them, only the sound of their laughter and the occasional bark of amusement, but that happy semi-silence ended with the loud echoing sound of a gun shot. Yin let out a gasp of horror when she watched a blossom of red blossom in her mate's chest, and her eyes filled with distress and grief when he crumpled to the ground. His black eyes faded into a blank-ness that was undesribable, and Yin had no time to cry when a bullet struck the ground near her paw. She snarled and grabbed thei-her, pups in her jaws and took off towards the den. As she ran, the tears flew behind her, almost seeming like rain drops. She felt a bullet pierce her side, but she had to get those pups to safety! As she finally reached the den she collapsed and the pups scurried inside, fear lighting their faces. "Run children!" She exclaimed, and another bullet drove through her side and her eyes went dull. Yin and Yang glanced at one another and ran back as far into the cave as possible, trying to get away from the things that killed their parents. This cave was filled with swirling paths and dead ends, but somehow, some miracle, they managed to get out on the other side. They lived together for the longest time, staying near those caves were they had always been. Finally, they moved on to the mountains, where they met a pack of wolves known as the Northern Lights, where they still stay today. Brother and sister they are now not any longer. They claimed their rightful places as alpha male and alpha female.
