Am I the only one who thinks that the not a diary community is running out of ideas when it comes to names?

I mean, I don't want to be rude, but all I see nowadays are random objects. And they often don't really have a reason to choose that specific item, other than the fact "the word diary is ew".

That doesn't mean that the diary is bad, but I feel like some people don't really put thought into names these days..

I do sort of agree. It is odd to see tons threads being named after random house objects.

But I don't really think that the diary community is running out of names? Like, the whole reason anybody named their diaries, "This Is Not A Diary, It's A [insert random thing]" in the first place was to parody the fact the stories that were aimed for preteen girls. You know, the ones that were written in a diary format but the author saying that diaries are too girly, so it's going to be called a journal.

So, on Chicken Smoothie (Or wherever else? I never really saw a Not A Diary anywhere else.) the Not A Diaries are parodying this and instead of naming it a journal or a log, like a normal person, they name it something completely random.

I don't know. I think it's just to show that the protagonists of the Not A Diaries are just really random and that the story is going to be a silly humorous one.

Why not call it diary? What's wrong with diaries? So many people don't call them diaries that calling it a diary is unique.

Why not call it diary? What's wrong with diaries? So many people don't call them diaries that calling it a diary is unique.

I think I know of two or three called diaries, actually. Dead, admittedly, at this point, so I guess they might not count? I'm guilty of the meaningless names myself, so I'm not going to comment any more on that.

(on that note, though, did i ever explain the planet's title? in-universe, thalia had no reason to call it that. meta-ically, though, a huge theme in the story is that there are thousands of worlds that we don't care about. similarly, we know nothing beyond our own planet.)

On a marginally more positive note: do you guys focus more on characters or plot or what? I usually have a heavy focus on characters/worldbuilding. The Lychee v2 was basically intended to be an extended character study for the main characters; both that and the Planet were meant to have super-fleshed out worlds and cultures. Since diaries are often slice-of-life with romance, it just seems natural, you know? I don't really care about Generic Quirky Female Protagonist #107296 (but she's better than the other girls because she's smart, and she doesn't like fashion, you see - as if liking art makes someone a terrible person? I can't possibly express how much I hate this trope) and her attempts to woo Generic Nice Jock #192. Though of course those can be great too, with the right plot.

Honestly, sometimes, I like to see what the users can come up with in the names. I simply thought of Rattlesnake and simply branched characters from there. I think Ruby partly chose Rattlesnake because of her name starting with R as well and her love of those snakes.

Well, I usually focus on the characters because I always have ideas for the characters before the plot. Also, I don't think a lot of plots are stable because most diaries have open forms to have characters join, so you can't accept ten characters and then not put them in the story because of the 'plot'. (cough) Usually, most diaries bend the plot a little or not have a plot at all to accept more characters?

Well... characters and plot..
At the start, I'm more about establishing characters, their relationships and quirks. Then later on, the plot will develop more, and more secrets will be revealed. Unlike the Apple and Apple pancake, I actually know what I'm doing this time. I loved Dakota/Silver but the Apple pancake was becoming a huge mess, because I didn't know what I was doing. I was throwing in stuff. (The magical girl thing never went anywhere, and the AP was becoming really cliche and messy.)

Lilyput is a mew, adorable and quirky. Silly and she's a mythical Pokemon! And she is really good at drawing with crayons. actually, no she isn't. and her handwriting is supposed to be terrible.

I literally started the Hawk with no idea of anything but my main character, Skyler. I'm planning to start a new diary, but I'm just procrastinating. A lot. I've done quite a bit of worldbuilding and stuff on it though...? Should I just start it?

I actually originally wanted to name my Tree the Pineapple because they're cool, but that was already taken, so I went with the next thing that came to mind. The only reason I had Isabella name her not-a-diary was because it was a trend, really.
As for whether I focus mainly or character- or world-building, I generally like to focus on world-building. Nonetheless, I try my best to make my characters as three-dimensional as possible.

Hey! It's been forever since I last posted. I finally updated my Tree, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I was originally going to have a time skip of a few months to a year or so into the next installment, but I'm wondering whether I should end it where I planned on leaving it off. If I were to do that, I would probably recycle the characters and do things a bit better; keep the Shadechasers plot, but start fresh, ya know? I'm just wondering whether it will be boring or something of a repeat. I'm enjoying this world, but I'm not happy with how I got there, if you catch my drift.
Any and all advice is welcome, and I would be glad to hear your opinions.
