Ella glared at him, then turned around and started eating her gruel. She washed it down with the water, then turned back to him. "Who'll be my guard next?" She asked.

"Probably that kid again. What's his name, M-something, I think," said the guard, squinting his eyes at the ceiling and trying to remember.

"I thought his name was Alex." Ella said. She sat up and looked at the guard.

"No," said the guard, scratching his chin. "Now that I think about it, wasn't his name Milo?" He got to his feet. "I'm gonna go find out." He lumbered up the stairs and out of sight.

Ella looked at the ground. It was probably just a coincidence. Milo couldnt be here.

Milo walked down the stairs, shielding his eyes from the glare coming in through the window. He saw that Ella was awake and blanched, then came slowly forwards out of the shadows. "Good morning, Ella," he said a bit awkwardly, regret filling his clear green eyes.

Ella turned away from him. "Hi." She said. She was hurt that he hadnt revealed himself earlier. "Sleep well?" She asked, staring at the blank wall.

"Ella-" said Milo, sitting down on the bench so he was facing her. "I-" he lowered his head, ashamed. "I just didn't want you to get hurt."

"I was already hurt when you left." Ella said, turning to him. "Every minute without you was agony." She said. "It would have been better if you had shown yourself." She whispered. Se was now clutching the bars, inches from his face, tears streaming down her own.

Milo reached a hand through the bars so he could cup Ella's chin in his palm, brushing her tears away gently with his thumb. "I'm so sorry, Ella," he said quietly, eyes sad. "I didn't want Alexa to hurt you because of me. I tried to get as far away from that life as possible." He laughed bitterly. "I guess it wasn't that far away at all."
