kaycee led finn back over to their original starting spot. she was glad that she had been able to pull finn away from the other brunette to avoid the obvious issue. when the two had returned to their frisbee game, kc gently tossing the frisbee and finn running all over, he asked, "why couldn't that boy play?" kaycee sighed as she took hold of the fire red frisbee and tossed it to the little boy. "he was with his friend. we don't want his friend to be lonely, right?" finn shook his head and let the matter drop. kaycee was glad that finn had bought the excuse. it wasn't a complete lie. she didn'twant to pull the coffee barista away from his own company. that would be rude, not that the guy would realize it, kaycee thought bitterly. finn's voice brought her out of her daze. "are you okay? you look angry?" the little redhead marched over to her with frisbee in hand, tilting his head to look up at his friend. "what? oh, i'm fine, finn." kaycee ruffled the boy's hair and the smile returned to her face. finn didn't seem convinced, but didn't say anything about it. he went back over to his mother and sat down in the sand, beginning to pile it on his feet. kc followed and helped him put sand onto his legs. in the next few minutes, the duo had completely covered finn's legs. letting out a yell, finn immediately slashed his legs around and broke the barrier as if he were king kong. kaycee laughed at the act. "you want to go back in the water?" kaycee asked finn, finally returning to a casual smile. "hm, okay. can we go ask if that boy wants to swim with us?" finn pointed to him, who seemed to be relaxing and involved in no conversation. kaycee's excuse had gone right out the window. "i guess." kaycee mumbledunder her breath , and seconds later finn was running accross the sand to ask. kaycee got up and jogged behind him, going up to the barista from earlier. "are you busy? my friend said you were, but now you're not so can you come in the water with us?" finn asked brightly.

Jack had formed a friendly smile as the kid came running over . he answered , standing up his voice toning down a bit softer ,
" yeah sure . i don't mind . let's go . " he glanced over at Michael , who was stretched out on the sand , his eyes closed and his breathing slow . that fool just feel asleep right there in the sand . he waved over at his dozed off friend , " don't worry about him . he's just taking a nap . maybe we can bury him later . " he tried to push the idea of the snappy brunette and their argument out of his head as he zeroed in his attention on the kid . he took off running to the waves , wearing a grin along his good looking face . he stood in the waves and beckoned the youngster over in a welcoming gesture . he tried to be as nice as he could to the younger one , as he knew a kid as friendly as him would never snap back . he remembered the tattoo he had on his chest . he hoped the kid didn't ask about it , as he didn't want to be a bad influence in any way to him , especially with his mother sitting on the beach . he glanced over at the others on the beach , seeing the brunette was a bit grumpy , and Michael was just snoozing away . he too still was a bit worked up over everything , but he hid it well , as he knew after taking Michael down a bit too hard earlier let him know he was beginning to take it out on others . and the younger kid was definitely was the last person to take his anger out on . he had a punching bag in the garage that he let himself go at sometimes . it felt kinda weird being actually nice to someone , as he rarely talked to younger kids even , as he often terrified them . he was willing to be kind to this kid though , as something about him hit his very small soft spot .

finn beamed from ear to ear, jogging alonside of his new found friend. he stared at the teen in awe as they raced into the water. immediately, the little boy froze and let out a yelp, forgetting how cold the ocean water was. kaycee came up behind the two, trying to force a happy smile on her face. of course, with finn alone it wasn't that hard. heck, even she could tell that that guy was having a blast with finn. nonetheless, she didn't want that barista with her and her pal. and once more, as earlier today, kaycee and finn rode out the waves together. this time, however, alongside another teen. kaycee took sideglances at him, watching the other brunette play with finn . she had to keep a check on him. finn at one point, jumped onto the other teen's back, trying to get him to fall into the water. kaycee tensed , and hastily went over to make sure finn wouldn't get hurt. this coffee server had a very short temper, so kaycee had to make sure he wouldn't take it out on little finn. she stood next to the other brunette and watched expectantly, smiling at finn and giggling once and a while , and at the same time, sending warning glares to the other guy. as finn gripped his neck, he was able to pull himself up enough so that he could hold on comfortably , feeling his friend's muscles. "wow! you're super strong! can i be strong like you too?" finn asked excitedly, still a bit intimidated and excited. this burly guy was his new role model. kaycee couldn't help but stifle a laugh at finn's words. he was adorable. she was curious to hear the response given, as she had never seen the barista act actually happy before. would it be a miracle if he did! kc felt her toes go numb in the cold water , as the water began feeling warm instead. she fixed her stance as she was able to because of the numbing, and held her own against the waves better. they washed up against her midcalf , her face tainted with mist. "you're so cool!" the exclamation woke kaycee from bher daze as she directed her stare to finn squeezing the barista's biceps. "finn! that's not very polite," was kc's reaction, taking finn's han and putting it down to hold onto the shoulders. sure, someone could argue that finn had jumed onto the boy's back, but still. it was odd, even so.

Jack made sure not to take out the kid , as he let out most of his anger on Michael earlier , and wouldn't think of hurting his little body , ever . he felt the small hands of the child squeeze his muscle woven arm . he looked over his shoulder and grinned at his question , " sure you can . if you put your mind to it . " he admired Finn's curiosity . his heart ached slightly as he began to realize that he was the role model for the little boy . maybe kids weren't so bad after all . that is , until they hit the teenage years . he caught the glares from the brunette , but he ignored them , as he didn't need her to warn him to stay nice . he hopped a little so that Finn perched more comfortably on his back . he glanced at the brunette as she took his hand and set it on his shoulder . he didn't mind the kid at all , but he figured it was better to teach him at least some manners . although , he was pretty well behaved for his age . he slipped Finn off his back , and grabbed his hands firmly in his . he began to spin round and round , Finn flying through the air in circles . he made sure he didn't fly off by holding his hands an arms firmly , but not too tight . he then slowed , and brought Finn back down on his feet . Jack had forgotten all about the bitter coldness of the waters , as he was actually having some fun with the youngster . he ruffled the kid's hair with a hand , beaming down at him . he let out a small chuckle as the kid exclaimed that he was ' cool ' . he really wasn't much into himself , but he simply liked the fact that Finn looked up to him . he had never thought in a million years that he'd be the role model type . he wasn't complaining though . Jack glanced at the sun behind him , seeing that it was slowly but surely closing distance between it and the horizon line of the ocean . he guessed it was late afternoon , as he realized that he had spent most of his day at the beach . the tension between him and the brunette was still there , but somehow little Finn had toned it down just a little .

kaycee inhaled a sharp breath as she watched finn get flung around in the air. it gave her a heart attack, watching him be held so loosely, almost as if he were going to be thrown into the water. but as she heard finn's little laugh of pure glee as he was being spun, she couldn't help but join in too. his laugh was completely and one hundred percent contagious. she actually smiled for real in front of the other teen, which made her feel very embarrassed and as if she had lost all her dignity. but she figured, kaycee could use a good laugh so why bother feeling stupid? kaycee glanced back at finn's mother and saw that she was beginning to pack up. kc knelt down next to finn, who still was oggling up at the coffee barista and said, "finn, it's time to go." she watched as the transformation of happiness to sheer sadness occurred on his face. "i know, but you can come back tomorrow." she tried to comfort the little boy, but knew that it would most likely do no good. "i guess... but i wish he could come too." finn turned from kaycee to the other teen, "if my mommy says i can come back tomorrow , can you come back to the beach with me?" his eyes still held glimmer of hope. finn went up onto the sand to go ask his mother and when he returned, the expression on his face said something very different than his original plans. "mommy says that tomorrow we have to run errands and do chores, but maybe the next day," finn said glumly, looking a the sand. kaycee furrowed her eyebrows in worry and said, "once you get your chores out of the way, it'll give you more time to play!" she let her tone be gentle and reassuring, and patted finn on the back. "c'mon, you go get cleaned up with mom, okay?" finn obliged unhappily and went to go see his mother. kaycee turned to the other teen and said, "thanks. you really struck him there, i think. he's a kid you really strive not to disappoint." she found herself not feeling as much tension that was originally there. kinda felt good. "i'm kaycee, by the way. i don't think we ever had the proper introduction." she didn't stick out her hand but merely nodded her head at him. kaycee's head snapped back to finn and saw that they were about to leave. "come say goodbye." she started to jog up the beach without waiting so she could bid farewell first. finn saw and waved at the two of them with a smile on his face again. kaycee waved back, seeing as the mother was probably in a hurry. "i should be going too. thanks again." kaycee began squeezing her wet shirt and pulled her shoes back on, excited to have a nice shower when she returned home.

Jack smiled down at the youngster as he offered for him to come to the beach to play with him tomorrow , but he understood as his mother declined , as they would be busy . he admitted that he was probably as disappointed as he was , " that's fine . i'm sure we'll see each other soon . " he smiled after Finn as he ran back to his mother . he was still puzzled as why the kid had touched his heart , not quite used to opening up to people . Jack's smile dimmed as he turned to the brunette , shrugging his broad shoulders , a bit awkwardly , " yeah , he's a great kid . " he listened to her state her name . he perked up slightly , now content that he had a name to her , and he could stop calling her the brunette . he was about to say his name , but then she ran off to say goodbye to Finn . he followed a few seconds later , waving to Finn as he exited the beach with his mother . the sun was now setting , and the warm orange sunlight made the sand sparkle and glow with brilliance . he glanced behind him to see the cool glittering waters were calm , the waves lapping gently at the shoreline as the sun's colors reflected off the waters like a mirror . he turned back around to Kaycee , seeing that she was getting to leave . he figured since she introduced herself , it would only be fair that he should give her his name as well , " uh , i'm Jack . nice to meet you Kaycee . " he wasn't really used to introducing himself this way , but he did it anyway , it felt kind of weird just standing there shirtless , so he walked over to his spot , and slipped his shirt back on over his now dry skin . he raised a brow as he discovered that Michael had left , a dip in the sand replacing where he slept . Jack inspected a note scrawled in the sand by Michael's finger , ' c u later at the campout . ' Jack shook his head , grinning a bit at the note . having gathered all his things , he started to leave the beach , feeling a bit numb from the bitter coldness of the waters , and the weird feeling that he just sorta made up with someone . he reached for his phone , texting Michael , ' i'll be there . ' knowing his friends would be waiting soon , he jogged towards the steps to get home and change to get ready to head out yet again .

kaycee heard the name jack be thrown into the air, and she nodded, not bothering to say anything else. she stalked off the beach in her soaking clothes, giving a little wave as she watched jack run off. he wasn't so bad, kc decided, but maybe it was just because of finn. she wouldn't be surprised if she saw him without finn by his side, the same old sour expression would be resting on his pretty face. but kaycee would cross that bridge when she got there, that is, if she even made an effort to get to the coffee shop again after the huge blowout fight that they had. the tension had luckily disappeared for a while , but kaycee was quite sure that it would reappear if she stepped onto his territory. the only thing , or person, that had bonded them together was little finn. kc was able to walk back to her house and jump into the shower, the hot water washing the saltwater off and down the drain. when she was dressed about an hour later, she was about to leave the house once more. it had grown dark out and kc was in the mood for a night adventure. she wasn't really sure what sped this desire, but by no means was she ungrateful for it. kaycee had picked up her sling bag , filled with a few items such as a flashlight, and had trekked down to terry's house, a few blocks away. she stood under the rebellious teen's window, waiting for the short haired girl to climb down. and after a few minutes after kaycee's arrival, kc could see the familiar figure moving through the darkness. terry was very much into late night adventures, so kaycee knew she was the one to call upon. terry led the two of them out of her neighborhood and down a few streets, kc just following blindly behind. "so what brought this new side of kaycee james out tonight?" terry questioned, breakig the comfortable silence between the friends. "just felt like getting out, i guess." kaycee shrugged in response, as if terry could see. but terry knew her friend well enough, so it was like she actually could see behind her. "well i like this new side of you." terry informed, stepping up onto a boulder that had suddenly appeared in front of them.

terry managed to help kaycee onto the large rock, using both hands to pull her friend up with her. the short haired brunette cast a flashlight ahead of them, revealing a very haunting forest. kaycee watched some wind billow through, causing the branches to wave slightly. she shivered, yet didn't turn back. "getting cold feet already?" terry broke the silence, shooting kaycee a sly grin. she didn't wait for kaycee's response, jumping to lower ground. kaycee followed behind, her heart rate beginning to speed up a little bit. however, she let herself relax into it, as they were looking for an adventure. kc followed her comrad through the forest, wading in and out of small ponds of water , over tree branches and under towering trunks until they were climbing a steep rocky hill. "don't look down. once we reach the top, it'll be worth it." terry was farther up ahead, obviously knowing the trail , coming there many times before. the brunette took a steady gulp before beginning to climb the hill. she was able to nudge her foot into a somewhat stable nitch in between two rocks. kaycee figured this would be a good time to put her sixth grade rock climbing skills to use, so that's what she did. hand, foot, hand, foot. don't look down. kaycee managed to make it up to the grassy area of the climb, which was luckily near the top. kaycee planted her feet sideways and walked to the top of the hill, completing the climb. she turned around , to see what terry was staring at. and oh, what a view. she could see allthe small building lights, hear the sounds of the town and the ocean mixing together. it was breathtaking. "you were right." she stated simply, turning to her friend. terry had been in a daze, but upon hearing those words, she quickly snapped back to her normal mischevious self. "oh please honey, i know."

Jack and his friends started a casual conversation , and before they all knew it , they were all bursting out laughing at something immature , or something more on the inappropriate side . Jack was feeling pretty great , as the old feelings that their friendships had developed over the years had yet again came back up to the surface . Michael toppled over on his back , and Vincent had thrown his head back against the tree trunk he was leaning on . they were all a bit drunk , but Jack was probably the most sober . the once flaming fire had grown smaller , it's glowing orange light dim , but would still be visible from a distance . the woods a few yards away from their circle of trees , rusty cars , and obnoxious booming laughter , had faint noises of crickets and hooting of owls echoing around them . Jack then threw himself back against a beat up old station wagon , his mind spinning slightly . gazing up at the stars , they appeared to be little swirling balls of light . Michael said something weird and random , clearly the most drunk . Vincent had climbed a tree , and had fell down , soon passing out in a deep slumber after that . Jack lifted his head , it now feeling like a heavy weight . Michael was counting on his fingers , and Vincent still layed there , shirt pulled over his head , snoring . Jack mumbled , rubbing his eyes , " we should probably get back . " Michael waved his hand as if he was shooing Jack away , and began tugging down on his pants . Jack still had his sense somehow , and got up in a bit of a stumble . regaining his balance and footing , he made his way over to Michael , and pushed him back down on the ground a little harshly , knowing he was too drunk to care . forgetting about the removal of his pants , he now played with the dead pine needles as if they were people , making little noises as he made them dance . Jack snorted at him , amusement beginning to bubble up at his friend's little puppet show . soon they were both bursting with laughter once again , laughing for no apparent reason now . their booming voices carried out of the circle , and echoed a little throughout the field and dark woods . Michael had fallen silent , but he quickly stumbled to his feet , and started dragging his feet in circles . he then tripped , then just lay there on the ground , his cheek pressed up against the ground . his dark haired friend soon fell asleep as well . Jack turned away , satisfied that his friends were now quiet , and sound asleep . he didn't bother to wake them up and drag them home , as it would probably be best for them to just get back to their homes in the morning , then risk being caught in the middle of the night trying to sneak back , with the state they were in . for some reason , he was wide awake . blinking , he glanced over by the glowing embers of the fire , and saw that Vincent had three beer bottles on his side , Michael with three and a half , and Jack with just two . his eyes wandered around him aimlessly , as now the only things around him were the faint sounds of the forest , the crackling of the dying campfire , two passed out friends , and the soft serenade of the crickets .
