But the way I do is practice by using references and draw the paws over and over again until a reference isn't needed and you can just draw them into your style~

Well, while there is many ways to draw a paw, its most important to look at references.
I found this tutorial on deviantart to be the most helpful in the sense of the realistic direction CLICK
But before you draw on the computer, I personally think its important to practice drawing different paw poses on paper, so you get used to it.
