Ace of Space wrote:About book covers- honestly, (this feels terrible and i apologize) i don't really like the British version of the Harry Potter series. They're just... weird to me. I don't know if it's just because I'm used to the American version or what but I don't really like them. His face on the first book just looks a little... strange, and not how I imagine him to look.
Another cover I really don't like is the newer Song of the Lioness quartet covers. They just look very cheesy and don't really represent the story... at all. It makes the story seem like some broody teen romance. Like ugh those covers make me so mad the original ones were so nice why did they have to ruin them T.T

WOW they absolutely ruined those... I didn't realize they had new covers oTL

Since we are on the topic of book covers, I hate it when an author has a series, but then other books that have nothing to do with the series that look almost exactly the same. I saw a book in the bookstore the other day and thought it was part of a series, but it was not and I was so confused. It had the exact same cover style, exact font, exact everything. It's so annoying to me!

It's called cashing in, which is the same reason why every teenager's book nowadays is compared to Harry Potter or The Hunger Games.

EDIT: Does anyone know some good books originally written in French, preferably from France, that have English translations? Since French is a subject at school I really like, I'd like to learn about their culture via my current interest, reading, of course. I tried Oksa Pollock, but I just got bored of it, to be honest.

I have found my home!!!

Username: ErulasseAranel
Nickname (if any): Erulasse, I guess
Top Ten Favorite Books: oh no... please don't ask me... well, other than #1, these are in no particular order:
1. The Lord of the Rings
2. The Books of Bayern (series)
3. The Phantom Tollbooth
4. The Story Girl
5. A Snicker of Magic
6. The Unwanteds (series)
7. Hold Fast (Blue Balliet, also pretty much all of her books)
8. A Series of Unfortunate Events
9. The Wizard of Oz (series)
10. Aaaaa, "A Mango-Shaped Space" and the Land of Stories (series) and the Narnia books and the Anne of Green Gables series
Average amount of time it takes you to finish a book: Hmm, it depends. It... really depends. I can read very fast though, so if I'm interested I can easily finish in a couple of hours. However, I have terrible reading comprehension, so rereads will then be necessary.
How many of the above symptoms you regularly experience: Pretty much all of them! I use book quotes if I can remember them (see above answer). It's very easy for me to get attached to characters, but not... like... romantic love. (Sorry, sorry, I know, I shouldn't say "like.) I mean, I love them, but not in that way.

@Erulasse
Ahh I love the Phantom Tollbooth!! And the Wizard of Oz series! I just loved fairytale-like books when I was younger. Actually, if you like those type books you should check out The Girl Who Circumnavigate Fairyland! It's super clever and it's so great. I love the author's writing style, it's very Alice in Wonderland/Phantom Tollbooth-esque.

I'm currently reading Across the Universe by Beth Revis. I don't really know what to think of it so far--the characters are annoying, but the concept is really interesting. It's about a gigantic ship bound for a potentially habitable planet, but it's three hundred years away--it's a gigantic ship with thousands of people on it, a lot of them frozen, and a girl is woken up fifty years early by an attempted murder. Anyone read it? Is it worth finishing?
But I have a feeling that the romance is going to be one of those at first sight, highly lust-driven ones, and I prefer a more organic friendship-driven one. So. >_>

I've read it, and it's just kind of average. It's not an awful book, but it isn't great either. Finish it if you want to, there's not really any reason not to.

I don't usually go on book-buying sprees, but I recently went to two local thrift stores and also shopped on Thrift Books, and I made some SERIOUS savings! :D I got all of the following books for really cheap! I'm so happy I was able to find the Star Trek books in particular - those are VERY hard to find where I live, so I'm suuuper happy I finally found them for reasonable prices!

Now I'm only missing Q-Space, Q-Zone, and Q-Strike, and then I have all of the books about Q! :D He's one of my favorite characters in the series, so I'm SUPER happy I was able to find two hard-to-find books online and in my local goodwill!

Lastly, I reorganized my bookcases, and I wanted to show y'all the finished products! :D

Dude, that's awesome! Alex and the Ironic Gentleman was one of my favorites growing up. I remember reading it on long car rides to Florida.

Your bookshelves look so neat and pretty! I need to do the same with mine. I've got more books than I know what to do with, haha ^_^"

For some reason of all the books on my nonfiction shelf, Goodreads only has recommendations based on Writing Children's Books for Dummies. Does anyone know why this is? Is it a glitch or something?
EDIT: Never mind, it was fixed.

Earlier on today, I was reading the discussion on the worst book covers, and it made me feel sort of nostalgic. So, now, I shall ask the opposite question: What are your favourite book covers?
Besides the aforementioned 2014 Bloomsbury Harry Potter covers, I also really like the Egmont Seekers covers, which are photographs on top of sky-themed backgrounds, of various colours. Great Bear Lake, The Last Wilderness and Spirits in the Stars are my favourites.
Incidentally, I like to joke that The Last Wilderness is the reason why Piers Torday keeps using "wild" as a noun.

Speaking of books with "wild" in the title, are Sky Hawk and Wild Wings different titles for the same book? Goodreads lists them as two different books.
