How do you get gems?

Gems can be acquired a few ways. There's mainly three ways you can get gems.

One, you can acquire gems through events- normally through daily tasks or through raffles. There are no events going on, however, but if there are in the future you can always convert the event currency into gems. In events you can also get items, and if you are not using the items you can always sell them to get gems back. However, the store is closed at the moment, so you cannot sell / buy anything ATM.

Two, you can get gems from other people- through commissions, namely. There's a transfer form for that, whenever someone decides to pay you in paint gems they just fill it out and the amount of gems will be transferred from their bank to yours.

Three, you can go and draw art of RPWs for people- there's a specific RPW art thread for this, and each type of art rewards a different amount of gems. This is open all year round now, and can be found here. There's more information on that front post on that thread!
