Hello all of my fellow Whovians! ♥
I haven't posted here in awhile, but I recently had some Doctor Who related happenings go on and I want to share my experience with you all. X3

So, a few days ago on the 9th, I had an absolute blast at the Doctor Who Day at one of my "local" public libraries to celebrate/honor Doctor Who Comics Day!
This event had Doctor Who displays (there's this one guy who works at that particular library branch who is a MAJOR Whovian and puts all his toys and things in display cases in the library).
This event also had a Doctor Who cosplay contest, Doctor Who crafts, a screening of the 1996 Doctor Who movie featuring the regeneration of the 7th Doctor into the 8th, and also had a Doctor Who Trivia Scavenger Hunt.

I went to the event prepared for the cosplay contest, dressed as Osgood from UNIT. Though I didn't win the costume contest, I still got a prize since Penguin Random House sent the library Doctor Who books to give away as prizes and they had plenty to spare to give as consolation prizes. :) So, I got myself a copy of Summer Falls and Other Stories:
Image
a book which I've been dying to read ever since I found out that the book was real and not just in the show. X3 The main title of this book is from the episode of season 7 part 2 called "The Bells of St. John." This book also includes the story The Angel's Kiss by Melody Malone, which is from the episode 'The Angels Take Manhattan.' This book also includes the story Devil in the Smoke by Mr. Justin Richards and is inspired by "The Snowmen' episode.
I can't wait to read this book. X3 I want to know if I really will cry my eyes out on chapter 11 like Clara Oswald said. X3

Also, I won the Doctor Who Trivia Scavenger Hunt! I was one of three people who answered all 13 questions correct and the only one present when the winners were announced, so I got first dibs on the prizes! ♥ I made off with a set of 7 Doctor Who books as my prize. XD They're novelizations of Doctor Who episodes and each feature a different Doctor. The titles are as follows:
-Doctor Who and the Zarbi (this novel is based on the serial The Web Planet)
-Doctor Who and the Web of Fear (based on the story that was originally broadcast from Feb. 3 to March 9th of 1968)
-Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Invasion (based on Invasion of the Dinosaurs, which was originally broadcast Jan. 12 - Feb. 16 1974)
-Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks (based on the story which was originally broadcast from March 8th - April 12th 1975)
-Dcotor Who: The Visitation (based on a story originally broadcast from 15-23 Feb. 1962)
-Doctor Who: Vengeance on Varos (based on a story originally broadcast from 19-26 January 1965)
-Doctor Who: Battlefield (based on a story originally broadcast from 6-27 September 1989)
I'll see if I can find a picture to show you of what the covers look like. They all look amazing though and I can't wait to read them all. X3
I was originally tempted to get the Doctor Who iPhone 5s phone case that was the TARDIS since I have an iPhone 5s and my current Doctor Who related case sustained some minor damage on the left side from a fall during math class, but it wasn't that bad a break and honestly, 7 prizes instead of 1 sounds so much better. X3

Also, as part of the Doctor Who crafts they had going, there was a station where you could make pins. You just cut out pre-printed pictures and got them turned into pins. I had a field day and made like...10. ^^;
I took pictures with the cardboard standees they had and my friends took some too, so expect to see some or most of them at some point (all faces will be edited out). lol.

The only thing I regret not being able to do was watch the movie. I really wanted to, but I was so busy finding all the trivia questions and answering them that by the time that I was done, they'd already started the movie and had gotten half-way through it, so I just moved on to making pins. No big loss really, I can always check the movie out from the library and watch it on my own. X3

Also, for those of you who are interested in what the trivia questions were for the Trivia Scavenger Hunt, I happen to have kept a copy of my answer sheet and I have the questions still fresh in my mind. X3 Each of the questions correlated with the Doctor pictured on the sheet and the order is in order of Doctor. So if the paper had the 1st Doctor on it, then you’d write the answer in the answer space for 1. Some of these are not worded verbatim, but here they are:
1) What was the name of the Doctor’s granddaughter?
2) Which companion has been in the most episodes?
3) What was the name of the fighting style the Doctor uses?
4) How many versions of K-9 did the Doctor build?
5) What was the article of produce that the Doctor wore on his lapel?
6) What was the name of the villainous Time Lord (and possible future version of the Doctor) that headed up the prosecution in “Trial of a Time Lord”?
7) What accent was the Doctor supposed to have?
8) What does UNIT stand for?
War) What were the War Doctor’s first words?
9) What was Rose’s last Christmas present from her father?
10) What was the name of the planet where dogs have no noses?
11) What is the name of the constellation that Gallifrey is home to?
12) What was Me’s original name?

Wow, that sounds awesome, Rabbitheart!

Oh cool, I didn't know that was a real book, either. I've gotta find it! :D

I think those books were a great choice for your prize. ^^ That's a really nice selection, too: "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" and "Genesis of the Daleks" in particular are two of the best stories of the Third and Fourth Doctors. I have no idea if the novelizations are any good (I hear they often change a lot from the originals, which isn't necessarily a good thing or a bad thing,) but if they're on par with the TV versions, you should enjoy them a lot!

What was the answer to question #7? I'm pretty confident I know all the others (well okay, I don't think I can answer #9 off the top of my head, but I do vaguely remember where it was mentioned, x3) but I can't for the life of me remember them saying anything about the Doctor having an accent before Nine, unless I'm overthinking it and it's just "English accent" or something else general and obvious, lol. I know Sylvester McCoy is Scottish, but I don't really hear a Scottish accent with his Doctor, apart from the occasional rolled r?

-------------------------------------------

I have a small thing to share, too, which is that I recently bought a gorgeous leather bracelet from Etsy (EmbossedGifts) and had it customized with one of my favorite Doctor Who quotes. The bracelet turned out absolutely amazing and I love it! I've been wearing it constantly for about a week now.

The quote is "Take the world that you've got and try and make something of it. It's not too late," from, coincidentally, "Invasion of the Dinosaurs." :) The 3rd Doctor gets all the best lines. Then there was extra room on the end, so I had a bird silhouette added 'cause why not? :P

@Schuyler ~ It was awesome! ♥ I had so much fun. ♥
And thank you very much! :3 I'm rather pleased with the selection too! :3 I've seen a few of those episodes actually. I've seen the "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" storyline and I've seen "The Web of Fear" storyline as well (although part of it was pictures set to audio since some of the episodes in that storyline are part of the lost episodes). I think I've also seen "The Genesis of the Daleks" as well. Pretty sure I have. X3
The librarian and host/planner of the event said it was also a good choice, he said that those books were what got him into Doctor Who when he was younger. X3
Also, the answer to 7 is Scottish. The 7th Doctor was supposed to have a Scottish accent. X3

Heh, I guess it's just my ears being weird, then, because he doesn't sound at all like he's supposed to be Scottish to me. I've always thought Sylvester was trying to do an English accent, like David Tennant. Then again, I often don't notice regional accents unless someone points them out, so I shouldn't be too surprised. xP

Oh, how did you like those stories? "Genesis" is hands down my favorite Dalek story and probably even my favorite 4th Doctor story. And I thought "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" had a really interesting plot, though the dinosaur effects are rather ... amusing, even by Classic Who standards. Well, I suppose if you're going to take the 1970's image of a dinosaur and try to recreate it with a low budget, you can't expect hyper realism. But other than that, I love it! The only thing I might whine about, and it's really not a particularly serious complaint, is that Jo had left by that time and we were stuck with Sarah Jane instead. Unlike what feels like the vast majority of Whovians, I'm not actually a major fan of Sarah Jane. x3 At least not companion Sarah Jane. I do find that I like SJA Sarah Jane a lot more, maybe because she'd mellowed out a bit by then.

*cough* Anyhow, before I start going off on tangents about companions and who-knows-what-else and completely forget what we were talking about (of course, I totally never do that, ever,) I'm curious to hear how the novels stand up to the originals! Maybe you could share some of your thoughts once you've read them? c: I might go out and find them myself sometime (looks like there are several at the library over here!) but for now I'm mainly focusing on watching the TV episodes I haven't seen yet.

@Schuyler ~ I think that's why the question was worded the way it was. XD What accent was he supposed to have? XD

I rather liked those stories, although the ones with missing episodes kinda threw off my groove because they try to includ those episodes by reconstructing them with still pictures and the audio files. I thought all three were pretty good, I really liked Invasion of the Dinosaurs and also Genesis of the Daleks. The Web of Fear was pretty good too, I'd probably have liked it better if most of the really big action sequences were part of the missing episodes that they had to piece together.
Invasion of the Dinosaurs had such a great storyline and despite the limitations of special effects in that time, it's still really good. I agree with you on the special effects though. Back then dinosaurs weren't seen the way that they are now, so with that in mind, they also aren't quite as scary. Because back then, they thought that dinosaurs were big, lumbering lizards that moved slowly. XD If that story was re-done now, I think that story would seem far more scary.
I hate to be one of those vast majority of Whovians, but I like Sarah Jane. XD I didn't really like Jo Grant that much, but sometimes I have to remind myself to be more fair to the older female companions because female characters of that time frame tended to not be either well-written or well...y'know flat and also a bit static dynamic-wise. XD I mean Jo Grant wasn't bad, she's just not one of my favorites. ^^;

I'll have to get back to you on how the books stack up against the episodes. XD I'm still working on the first book, Doctor Who and the Zarbi, although I'm almost finished with it. However, I wouldn't be able to tell you how it is compared to the episodes since I haven't seen that story. However, I will tell you that some of the wording in this book irks me. XD Since this author considers the TARDIS like any normal ship, it's referred to as "the ship Tardis." There's also no "the" before Tardis, so it just sounds weird to me. XD
I'll probably be able to tell you how The Web of Fear novel compares to the serial since I've seen that one. XD
Also, I'm just now realizing just how good a choice getting the 7 books was. This first book is priced at $7.99, or £6.99 in the UK or $10.99 in Canada. So multiply that by seven and it's $55.93 (not including tax) [or alternatively, £48.93 or $76.93], so that's waay more than what that phone case would have cost. XD So, I definitely got the better prize. X3

Also, I meant to say this earlier, but I love that wristband you got! :)

... What? WHAT? WHAAAT?! That does it. You, me, the alley over there, now. I'll get the bananas pistols. Let's go.

Nah, well, I can finally say that I've watched every companion, and Jo is by far my favorite, or maybe tied with Leela. :P I wasn't that impressed with Jo to begin with, but I started to take a liking to the character after I watched "The Mind of Evil," and she just kept growing on me from then on. She wasn't really given a backstory or anything, unsurprisingly, but she does have a nice personality. I see her as anything but flat, boring, or poorly written, and I love that she's one of the few companions (especially among those in the classic series) who are actually good at saving themselves and doing stuff on their own without always relying on the Doctor or someone else to do it for them. Not to mention that she's extremely loyal and even single-handedly saves & helps the Doctor many times instead of it always being the other way around. I love her. <3 In my opinion, she's one of the most well-acted companions, too, and the chemistry between her and Jon Pertwee is fantastic.

And I mean, I don't not like Sarah Jane. I can understand why she's popular with a lot of people. She just probably wouldn't make my personal top 10. (I say "probably" because there are only nine companions that I legitimately love and so I'm not quite sure who would get the tenth spot. xD) I don't know exactly what it is about her that puts me off, maybe I find her personality a little too ... Rough? There's probably a better word for what I'm trying to say, but it's not coming to mind at the moment. ^^'

Pfft, "the ship Tardis." Gosh, that would bug me so much, too. At least they're not calling the Doctor "Doctor Who" as well. ... Or are they? xD

And thank you! ^^ I'm sooo happy with the bracelet. As someone who hates attracting attention to herself, I love how it works as a subtle fandom reference as well as a meaningful statement even out of context. It hasn't attracted any Whovians yet, but I have gotten a few compliments from people who knew nothing about the show but loved the quote. <3

The answer to that question is...yes. Yes, I'm afraid that they were doing that too.
That was also extremely painful. X3
But then, from what I've gleaned, the older seasons would actually credit the role as Doctor Who instead of The Doctor like they do now.
I mean, sometimes, he'd just be called The Doctor in the book, but at other times, he'd be called Doctor Who.

To be honest, I've only seen...one or two stories with Jo Grant...that I can think of off the top of my head. X3 I'd probably need to watch more episodes with her to get a better idea of her character anyway. X3

Also, your bracelet is therefore a clever ploy to get people interested in Doctor Who. X3

Hey everyone! I wasn't sure if anyone heard the rumors about Matt returning to DW as the Doctor, but I found out that it wasn't true. He answered some questions in a live webchat a week or so ago, so if you're interested here it is: Click here

It's been a while as well, but this summer I got to meet/see Karen Gillan and Matt Smith. I saw Matt's play "Unreachable" in London when I was in the UK for a bit, and after I came back home, I got to see Karen in a convention. It was really cool to see them both. I even recorded some of Karen's answers to the fans' questions and if you're interested I can upload them for you all!

Finally, I have some questions for you all!
    Code: Select all
If you got to travel with any companion, who would it be and why?

    Code: Select all
Which DW monster/alien would you be most afraid of and why?

If you got to travel with any companion, who would it be and why?
For me, it'd probably Amy Pond. Honestly, I love her personality and how she's not really afraid of anything, she's eager to travel around and I feel like it'd be a lot of fun to travel around with her.

Which DW monster/alien would you be most afraid of and why?
Weeping angels. Weeping angels can zap you back in time and they can move when you're not looking at them. Not to mention, they look a little creepy!

i love calling the doctor dr who

@ rabbitheart have fun reading the target novelizations!! i love that range! i haven't read any of those ones but if you can get your hands on a copy of 'doctor who and the daleks' i highly recommend it - it's the first ever dr who book and does a bang-up job novelizing the serial

finally got around to answering those questions from a while back ha

Who is/are your favorite Doctor(s)?
eight, one, twelve, and dr who are my faves

Who is/are your favorite companion(s)?
fitz!!! also anji, ian & barbara

What is/are your favorite episode(s)?
i have a special fondness for the sensorites & the historical eps

Who or what is/are your favorite monster(s) or villain(s)?
sabbath is my fave villain hands down

Any favorite quotes?
“Break, damn you! Break! You’ve never had a spanner like this thrown in you! Chew on me till your teeth crack. Grind me up till your gears lock. I’m the nail in your tyre, the potato jammed in your exhaust pipe, the treacle poured in your petrol tank. I’m the banana peel beneath your foot, the joker that ruins your straight flush, the coin that always comes up heads and the gun you didn’t know was loaded. I am the Doctor!”

-eighth doctor, camera obscura

Why did you decide to start watching Doctor Who?
caught the tail end of an ep while browsing once and was hooked

Have you watched both New Who and Classic Who? If not, are you planning to eventually watch both? If yes, do you have a preference for one or the other?
yep! i love classic who so much but my favorite is eu who

Have you watched any of the spin-off series?
i watched like the first 5 minutes of the torchwood pilot once

Do you own any DW merchandise or have plans to get some?

If you got to travel with any companion, who would it be and why?

Oh c'mon, there are too many to choose from! But if I had to pick just one I would most want to travel with ... Yeah, I'd probably say Jo, for all the reasons I said in my previous post. She can make herself useful and also has a lovely personality. ^^

But hey, if I could have my way, I would gather all my favorites together -- that would be Jo, Leela, Ace, the Brigadier, Ian, Jamie, K-9, Donna, & Captain Jack -- and throw one big TARDIS party. I don't know if everyone would get along, but it would be awesome regardless. xD

Which DW monster/alien would you be most afraid of and why?

Hmm, that's a good question. I don't know if there are any DW monsters I would ever want to run into, lol. But I'd have to say I'm probably most afraid of either the Flood or the Vashta Nerada. With both of them, one tiny slip-up and before you even realize what's happened, you're done for: either transformed into a monster or eaten alive in seconds. *shudder* Also, (small print to be on the safe side in case this is a minor spoiler for those episodes) they are two monsters that the Doctor never succeeded in truly defeating. He was only able to delay/escape them.

Same with the Midnight entity, which also terrifies me by how manipulative it was and how even the Doctor didn't, and still doesn't really, know a thing about it. In fact, (this one is a spoiler for sure; please don't read if you haven't watched "Midnight" yet) the Midnight entity even succeeded in defeating the Doctor, which is something hardly anything else in the history of the show has managed to do. Through its manipulative actions, the Doctor was left helpless, seconds away from being killed, and survived in the end only because the entity got overconfident and happened to make a small mistake entirely on its own that luckily the Hostess noticed in time. Unlike most other stories where he is able to stay more or less in control of the situation and win by being clever, the Doctor effectively lost that adventure on Midnight; if it hadn't been for sheer luck and the Hostess's quick thinking & bravery, the Doctor would have probably died right then and there.

Rabbitheart wrote:The answer to that question is...yes. Yes, I'm afraid that they were doing that too.

But then, from what I've gleaned, the older seasons would actually credit the role as Doctor Who instead of The Doctor like they do now.
I mean, sometimes, he'd just be called The Doctor in the book, but at other times, he'd be called Doctor Who.

I am soooo late with this response. xP

Yeah, he's credited that way from the very first episode up to the end of Tom Baker's era, and in the first season of the new series for whatever reason as well. I think I read somewhere that the character was originally meant to actually have the name "Doctor Who", so maybe that's why they had it in the credits and then I guess they just didn't feel the need to change it. But apart from the infamous "Doctor Who is required" line in "The War Machines", which is generally dismissed as a poorly checked script from a writer unfamiliar with the show, the character's in-universe alias is only ever established as "The Doctor".

(There's also the "Doctor Who and the Silurians" story and "The Death of Doctor Who", aka Part 5 of "The Chase", but we're just going to pretend those titles never happened, okay? And please don't get me started on the Peter Cushing films ...)

I'm not sure how exactly the thing with calling him "Doctor Who" got started and stuck around, but it drives me crazy when I come across it in the credits, interviews, books, etc. I don't usually go so far as to call people out about it because I don't feel like starting up yet another heated debate on which name is most appropriate to use, but inside I'm just like, "But that's not his name!!!" :x ^^;
