The clan had been in a state of shell shock for weeks. The apprentice's den was silent, which until now many had considered impossible. Morninglight and Lièvreshell were never seen unless on patrol, and even then they did not speak. Even under their thick coats, their bones were beginning to show, as neither were eating regularly. The clan spoke of them in hushed whispers, but none dared to approach. Grief hung in the air around them like a noxious cloud, fending off even the most well meaning of clanmates. Even Petalstar, close friend to both of them, was unsure how to help the pair.

Their remaining children were not much better off. Mestrapaw had taken in the hardest and refused to come out of her nest. Her sister Cydosiapaw brought her food every morning and evening, and refused to leave until her sister had taken at least a few bites. Fritillarypaw sat and watched with blank eyes, their hollow shell sometimes wandering the camp, returning any greetings with a blank smile. Splinterpaw was determined to help the cats she had come to see as cousins from their long time in the nursery, but was not sure exactly how to do so. So he did the only thing he knew how to do: he sat with them. How days he helped Cydosiapaw fetch food for her siblings, who seemed unable to remember to feed themselves, and for days he paced by Fritillarypaw's side as they made their laps around the camp, saying nothing. It was on the second week of this silent companionship that Mestrapaw finally broke the trio's silence. As Splinterpaw set down her breakfast and went to remove the mostly untouched dinner, he heard a soft, "Thank you." The apprentice had not moved from her balled up position, face towards the wall, but she didn't have to.

"It's the lease I can do," Splinterpaw murmured back, beginning to pick up the half eaten mouse and walk away, but paused at what he heard.

"Wait, please. I don't want to be alone today."

He said nothing again, just tossed the mouse aside and curled up next to the grieving Molly. He couldn't take any of her pain away, but he could sit with her while she bore it.

It was three days later that Fritillarypaw spoke too. "You don't have to follow me."

"Would you like me to stop?"

There was no answer, and so the pair continued their pacing.

Cydosiapaw was the last, almost a week later. She had seemed the least damaged by the event, as she had been the one to take over ensuring her siblings ate, but Splinterpaw had quickly realized that in taking on this task she had denied herself the time to mourn her lost brother.

They were carrying out the leftovers of the previous night, which each day were smaller than the last, when Cydosiapaw spoke.

"Why?"

Splinterpaw paused, glancing at her in confusion, "Why....what?"

Cydosiapaw tossed the remnants of the mouse in the garbage pile with unnecessary force, "Why do you keep doing this?" She spat.

Splinterpaw took a step back, confused, "I..I'm sorry. I didn't mean to intrude, I can stop if you like."

"You know that's not what I meant!" Cydosiapaw shouted, tears welling in her eyes, "Why do you even care? Why don't you just avoid us like the rest of them? No one else could even be bothered to ask if I was okay after the first few days, and you won't leave us alone for almost a moon! Why can you care and none of the rest of them can?"

Splinterpaw hesitated, unsure how to answer. "I...I don't know." He admitted. "I wish I knew."
