There was one life left, one life to Lyrastar's name. Lyrastar had seen so many cats over the course of her lifetime, from both the clan and the wilds throughout her lives and before she had been granted them by the StarColony, but it felt as if her previous seven lives had been so short, and there was so much potential for her clan to thrive even more underneath her leadership.
Lyrastar could remember the clan's first deaths, due to a cold winter where CosmoClan had been too careful about their prey - a decision she regretted now, and something she wished she had not done that had caused the deaths of two kits. Blossomfur and Joaquin had died after a badger attack and then a fox attack, as then there had been the casualties from the flood and greencough victims. So much loss had happened, deaths that she regretted also.
She still wished she could have done more to stop her clan suffering so badly in the floods - figuring out the prophecy she had received was one thing she could have done, but the signs were all there; some of the things the StarColony had told her had worked out on their own, but there were many questions still unanswered from both prophecies and small signs in daily life. The most recent prophecy had been "A storm of water is coming, bringing out the loyalties of every cat. Claws hold the clan together until the tide of truth," and the leader wondered what it meant. The flood part of the prophecy had happened, and she had began to pay closer attention to her warriors and if they behaved strangely or without care for their clanmates. As for the second part of the prophecy, the "claws" and what it symbolised was still a mystery to her, but she had the ominous feeling that there were untruths about the clan still untold, and the "tide of truth" would be those secrets of something new being revealed. The claws made her think of some of the odder cats in her clan. Lyrastar, upon being more observant, had noticed a few things that had seemed off that she had not considered before. CosmoClan had often been known for being rather mysterious, a clan that kept to itself while being quite open on the inside, but now there were multiple cats and paths that she would have liked to explore in more depth as they held secrets of their own. CosmoClan had always been a clan that shared things with each other, but more recently, Lyrastar had recognised the sometimes quirky or out of place behaviours of her cats, and hoped to figure out the things before they escalated.
"Why did you think of bringing yew berries into camp?" Emberblaze's voice alerted the leader to a conflict, and she followed the scenario with her eyes. She may have been ill after the flood but she did not want to ignore her clan while she had been, despite the fact that being off her duties had made her more able to think. Even if Lyrastar had been feeling much better after being well-rested, she stayed in the Guardian Den to look after and reassure the ill cats; while Emberblaze and Featherfall were going about her duties she also watched over the clan stayed by Ebonypool to watch over her friend. The black she-cat did not seem to be getting better though; she had coughing fits, fevers and drifted in and out of sleep to preserve the little strength she had left, and Lyrastar felt that if the worst was going to happen, she wanted to be beside her.
"The frosts have taken most of the herbs, Emberblaze, if the clan had to have something it was my specialty that would do. We also brought you a wonderful gift: a stick!" Yewheart's loud mew rose from the rim of the overhang. "I'm sorry Emberblaze! Yewheart insisted on fetching something and this stick is one of the best. We couldn't ignore it!" Solarspark seemed to be enjoying Yewheart's comment as well, but hadn't entirely picked up on the sarcasm on the stick. "There are kits running around the clan though, and Birchkit is in this den, so we shouldn't have brought it," Oliveshadow said. Lyrastar could imagine a look of concern on her face, her hesitant attitude showed clearly in her comment on the situation. Emberblaze lowered his voice. "I'll hide them then, in case we need them, but don't think I'll let anyone take them. Leave now, and thank you for the stick," Emberblaze finished wearily, flicking his tail towards the entrance. He waited until they were gone to flick aside a flat stone to reveal a small dip in the ground next to the herb stores, and gingerly placed the berry in before using the flat stone to cover it.
Emberblaze then looked over to the nests of the sick cats that lined against the wall, and dipped his head as he saw Lyrastar awake. He asked, "Is there any change in Ebonypool's condition?" he meowed, his careful eye sliding over to see the sleeping form of the black she-cat. Her breath rasped in her sleep, and she looked weak and feeble, her pelt ungroomed and ruffled. Lyrastar did not want to see her friend like this but spend her time with the she-cat as happily as she could. Losing family was hard - as she had experienced when a past version of CosmoClan had broken apart, and her parents had been lost while her brother had left for the mountains - so she did not want to see her childhood friend leave her too.
"I fear for her, Emberblaze," Lyrastar responded wearily, looking away from the guardian. She did not want to admit her thoughts on Ebonypool's illness to him, but informing him would be one of the best ways to save her. "Do you have any more catmint? She needs it, and Birchkit is getting stronger now." In response, the old tom shuffled on his haunches, not meeting her gaze fully. "I'm sorry, but," he began slowly, almost sheepishly to his leader, "the first frosts have damaged a few of the plants, and the cats with all three of us were rather distracting. I'm afraid that me and Solarspark may be getting older..." he admitted, finishing with a sigh. "My nose isn't as good as it was, and Solarspark is no longer around herbs as much too. I'm afraid we might need to find a new apprentice, but Dawnkit seems eager," the tortoiseshell tom meowed in low tones.
Lyrastar noticed the grey whiskers on his muzzle and his gaunt look, and realised that the warriors she remembered as young and strong from when she had started CosmoClan were now older, much more experienced and possibly ready to give up their positions for younger cats to take over. Emberblaze certainly seemed older, and it wasn't just his age, but also the grief he had experienced in the previous moons and the experiences that had taken a toll on them all during the flood. Not only had she lost lives and seen her own moons pass by, but she noticed signs of her clanmates aging. Soon some of her loyal warriors may be joining the elders, but she felt fine with that - there were many young cats running around the clan and the senior cats had moons of experience as well as deserved rest in store for them. Emberblaze, as if knowing what she was thinking, caught her eye and meowed, "I'm not saying that I'm getting ready to retire, but us Guardians would like some new help in our den. Asking the warriors to help us find herbs can be a bit distracting, and with illness proving to be bigger threat, we may need more help." Lyrastar nodded. She knew none of them wanted to let others know that they were getting older, but there were the signs that their clanmates saw every day.
"Sometimes we may have to admit that we are not as strong as we were," the leader began, remembering she only had one life left, "but we will have to let the younger generation take their places in paths trodden by their elders. I have one life left, and with this life I am hoping to see my clan grow ever stronger before I join the stars."
Emberblaze dipped his head, his eyes finding Featherfall in the clearing as she stepped out of the nursery with Dawnkit by her side. "CosmoClan has already grown strong," he agreed, continuing to look around the camp from the overhang. "Now is the time that the younger cats will grow into fine warriors to protect the clan, and we must face the challenges until then." Emberblaze meowed solemnly, his gaze brightening when it landed on Blossomrise, Sunrise and Rookrise, with Flamewing prowling beside them, before flicking to Featherfall and Heatherclaw's kits as they played moss ball beside them.
Lyrastar stiffened as she looked towards Ebonypool, the she-cat tossing and turning in her nest. Emberblaze gently placed a paw on her forehead, but Lyrastar did not have to do a similar examination to know it was burning with fever, or that the she-cat was gravely ill. Emberblaze sighed, his tail wrapped tightly around his paws and his eyes lowered away from Lyrastar's penetrating stare. "She's getting worse." Were the three, words that followed, making the leader dip her head begrudgingly. No surprise was in that small guesture, only sad acceptance.

Blossomrise sat with her siblings in the shadier part of camp, watching silently as the cats of CosmoClan moved about. She enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of every morning, the way her clanmates flowed along with their duties.
"Blossomrise! Sunrise!" Rookrise meowed, her tail flicking Blossomrise's ear. She turned towards her younger sister, taking in her joyful eyes, her black and white fur as it bristled playfully around her neck. For a moment she thought of her mother, and felt a pang of grief as Rookrise's leaf green eyes, so similar to Speckledleaf's, glistened with the same energy as their mother's eyes always had. "Are either of you willing to talk to me?" The expression on Rookrise's face changed to concern, and Blossomrise realised hastily she hadn't replied.
"What was it that you wanted to say?" she asked quickly, with a glance at Sunrise. Her brother had his ears turned towards them, but otherwise he didn't have that much attention on them. His calm, expressionless face was turned towards the sky instead. She wished he would speak now, but he kept to himself, detached from their conversation and the cats around him.
Rookrise curled her tail around his thin form. He flicked an ear, his only sign of him noticing her action, but continued his watch of the sky. With a glanced at Rookrise, she could see that she shared her worries about Sunrise and looked a little off put by his reaction. Despite Rookrise being the smallest and youngest out of the three she always had more energy than Sunrise and was able to show her emotions easily. Blossomrise had always admired her for her quiet optimism, and was thankful now that she was filling a silence Blossomrise had found uncomfortable. "It's a new day, and even if our mentors have other things to do we can still do something!" Rookrise told them cheerfully. Blossomrise nodded, wishing she could have been the one to make the suggestion. A lot of the other apprentices were in camp, and that made her have an idea. She opened her mouth, ready to suggest that- "Why don't we play a game with some of the other 'rises? Or we could just get to know more of them!" Rookrise told them hopefully, taking the words right out of Blossomrise's mouth.
Sunrise looked at his paws, then at his sisters. He caught Blossomrise's eye, and frowned as he saw her face. Blossomrise was glad he seemed ready to join their conversation, but she had forgotten how observant he was, with sharp eyes and a clever mind no matter what his usual silence implied. He seemed a little worried about interacting with other apprentices, but Blossomrise hoped Rookrise or herself would be able to introduce him to someone he could share things with, if not his siblings. Blossomrise didn't have Rookrise's instant connection abilities, or was a great listener like Sunrise, but she felt that she had some social skills and had made a few friends. She felt something nudge her shoulder, and looked up to see Rookrise, already standing. "Let's go then," she murmured, glancing around at her siblings; she noticed Sunrise was reluctantly rising to his paws. Blossomrise walked up to him, and meowed, "It'll be fine," she reassured Sunrise, blinking at him on what she hoped would be an encouraging way.
Sunrise dipped his head at her, and hesitantly opened his mouth to say, "Are you sure? They've barely spoken to me, as I have to them."
Blossomrise nodded, and reassured her brother, "You'll be fine, I'm sure. Every cat is-"
While she had been speaking, she hadn't noticed Rookrise walking over to her on the other side of Sunrise, until her loud mew sounded from beside him.
"We can introduce you to other cats, or you can stay with us! Every cat is welcoming, and we can help you!" her interruption made Blossomrise flick an ear to express her irritation, while Sunrise looked thoroughly annoyed before he resumed his mask of calmness. Blossomrise sometimes felt suffocated by Rookrise's eager personality, and angered that she had made their brother withdraw again when Blossomrise had planned to support him carefully. Although her sister meant well, it certainly was stressful for her to be looking over their shoulders at every turn.
"I'm sure we'll be able to find someone to talk to, and we'll be there to help," Blossomrise meowed, looking around the clan's camp, and noticing various young warriors and most of the apprentices, as well as the other cats of the clan here and there. Her paws pricked with uncertainty and a flare of anger as she saw Riverfrost talking to Doestripe, their pelts touching. She did not want to speak to them, and that was certain. Their father had tried to talk to them after the flood, but she felt as though she could not properly connect with him, and had watched as a gap had widened between them.
Blossomrise looked away from Riverfrost and was ready to talk to Dapplerise when she saw a tortoiseshell at the edge of camp, and felt a flicker of grief as she remembered Speckledleaf. This, however, was Flamewing, and hollow amber eyes instead of loving green eyes brought her to attention. Flamewing glanced over to her, and Blossomrise felt that she wanted to talk.
Sunrise followed her gaze, and his eyes narrowed. "Are you sure you want to talk to her?" he asked, having caught Flamewing watching them. The she-cat's gaunt tortoiseshell form was straight, and she had a sense of meaning to her usually masked face.
Blossomrise lay her tail over his shoulders comfortingly. "She wants to talk to me, then I'll give her company, if you don't mind." She caught a glance from him to Rookrise, who was already approaching Pinerise's group.
"You don't have to go to with Rookrise, but just go where you want to be. I'll just go see what hat he wants and then come over" Blossomrise told him gently, glad that she could comfort her sibling without Rookrise speaking over her. She did love both of her siblings, but now she needed to see her aunt instead. Flamewing reminded her of Speckledleaf, and she knew the she-cat would enjoy her company, even if she was a bit cautious of the older cat. After the flood, Flamewing now always had a bit of a haunted expression, her eyes carried shadows and her fur was often ruffled along her spine.
"Hello Flamewing," she meowed slowly and respectfully as she approached the tortoiseshell she-cat in the shadows.
Her aunt's head jolted towards her, and her amber eyes flickered with recognition. She wrapped her tail neatly around her paws and stared at the apprentice."Hello Blossomrise," Flamewing meowed, holding her head high. Blossomrise was glad to see that her face was clear and focused. "How are you today? Has your training been going well?" she asked with concern.
Blossomrise gave the warrior a smile. "I'm good today, are you? My trainings been going well and all too! We're doing hunting today, and then Briarsweep thinks that we might do stealth training afterwards,"
Flamewing listened, and nodded at the end in satisfaction. "As you asked, well yes, I have been the usual. Now and then someone will decide to talk to me. Herontalon talks to me at whatever opportunity he gets," Flamewing snorted, and glanced over to the tom lying nearby with Goldenwhisker and Magpietail. Blossomrise followed her gaze, and saw a quick flash of green and blue as the tom looked towards them, but looked away again. She wasn't entirely sure if she had just been seeing things until he looked back. She then glanced at Flamewing. The tortoiseshell gave an amused purr, but then her gaze grew serious. "It seems the entire clan has decided to bother me after the flood. Offering their sympathy," Flamewing looked at her clanmates and swished her tail. She may have seemed a little annoyed, but Flamewing had always seemed to enjoy the attention.
"You shouldn't ignore them though. Every cat lost a clanmate, and we should try to help them as well," Blossomrise meowed a little hesitantly. She didn't always enjoy talking to her clanmates but Flamewing had hardly spoken to many of them. Blossomrise remembered when she had been a kit and Flamewing had eagerly spoken to the warriors near her age of some exaggerated story, while Speckledleaf had smiled beside her sister, rolling her eyes while she spoke of mice as fast as the roaring winds. Sometimes Flamewing had brought them feathers and things, but she mostly spoke to Speckledleaf when she came to see them.
"Some of them leave me alone," Flamewing continued slowly, "your father included. He could at least offer some kind of sympathy towards our family," her claws slid out, and Blossomrise glanced over to where Riverfrost was. He seemed to be talking to Doestripe while the she-cat purred in amusement. Blossomrise frowned.
When she was a kit with Rookrise and Sunrise, he had also visited them, and did talk to them more than Flamewing did. Blossomrise vaguely remembered the tom rolling a moss ball towards them, and cheering on Sunrise while he hooked the moss ball with his claws. Blossomrise smiled fondly as she recalled more of the games they had played as kits, both by themselves and with their parents as well as the other kits. Riverfrost had always been supportive, but after the flood, he had talked to them less. She also remembered the hazy days after the flood where he had stared at his paws, blaming himself.
"I... Don't know. Maybe we should have all moved on from the flood by now," Blossomrise mumbled. She closed her eyes and saw a murky wave of water rolling around the territory, and shuddered. She certainly wanted to forget that, and all the terror.
Flamewing's eyes blazed suddenly, and she leaned forward with her tail fluffing out in an ominous way. "Are you saying we shouldn't stay loyal to the ones who died? She should continue to honour them!" she stared Blossomrise in the eyes, and reminded her, "you were named after my mother. I don't ever want to forget her or my sister," and Flamewing then allowed her fur to relax, and she seemed to fall back again, looking a little defeated.
Blossomrise at once remembered her own name was in honour of someone else. She had never known Blossomfur, having only heard she had died bravely while fighting a badger, but knew the family held her in high regard. She wasn't sure what to make of it, but knew it was considered an honour to be named after her, if not for their similar pelts. She wondered what the calico warrior had been like, and if she was similar to her. "Oh, well I'm sorry. I'm not saying we should forget them, but we should try to live our own lives too... I think? I'm not really sure. You can believe whatever you want," she rambled a little, and felt the fur on her spine lift as she continued. Blossomrise relaxed her fur, and met Flamewing's gaze. The tortoiseshell was now considering her with narrowed eyes. She had expressed a little bit of her thoughts then, but was cautious to see what she would say or do.
"Hmmm. You may believe such a thing but we should be loyal to our clan and our family," Flamewing insisted, her amber eyes looking a little wild still as she glared around camp. "We should not forget friends and family in the same way we might forget a catch. It is a warrior's duty to remember this, no matter what the other cats may think," she insisted, looking into Blossomrise's eyes. The wild look in her eyes was still there, and it sent a chill into her bones as the tortoiseshell whipped round and gave Riverfrost a dark look. She then turned towards Blossomrise again and asked, "can I trust you to stay loyal to your family and your clan?"
Blossomrise looked at her in surprise. She had never seen Flamewing express a side of her all about loyalty, and now the she-cat seemed to have gone a little mad. The fur along the tortoiseshell's spine bristled and her claws scraped across the earth. "Of course I will though," Blossomrise began, still feeling a little uneasy. "Family is important to me, and I will never stray from my clan!" Blossomrise promised, letting go of her initial concern. She would make sure to protect her family and friends. She didn't want to have to lose someone she loved again.

Sunrise watched Blossomrise pad away, towards Flamewing. His tail twitched as he saw the two begin to engage in conversation. He sat there, staying silent as the two chattered like birds.
He then jumped as Rookrise spoke in his ear. "Sunrise! You want to come and talk to Pinerise and the other apprentices with me?" Rookrise asked, concern lighting her gaze. Sunrise shook his head as soon as she mentioned Pinerise, and caught a look of hurt in her eyes.
"Sorry, I'll be fine on my own," he whispered quickly, brushing his muzzle against hers to reassure her. He appreciated how she and Blossomrise looked out for him, but did wish he could be more independent at times without his sister being concerned. "You go and have your own fun, and we can come together again afterwards," he added, hoping that she would understand. Rookrise blinked at him, understanding glowing in her eyes, but he could still see worry in their depths. He wished he could have reassured her more, but the words were caught in his throat like they usually were, making him unable to say anything more. Instead he watched as she turned and joined the other apprentices in their leaf game, and turned his eyes towards the new warriors and apprentices. They seemed to be having a meaningful conversation, with their heads drawn together, and Sunrise hoped he would be able to join them.
As Sunrise took a few uncertain steps forward, something ran into him. He stumbled to the side, but quickly righted himself, hoping no other cats had seen. Looking around the camp, he saw eyes drawn to him, and Riverfrost's smirking face in one corner. Shaking out his pelt, he turned towards the cat who had walked into him, and saw it was Dawnkit.
The kit, although still a kit and shorter than him, had no troubles immediately addressing him on the situation. "Oh, sorry Sunrise," she began in polite tones, confusing Sunrise beyond his temporary daze. "Can you help me get Swiftsky and Lizardstorm? They are needed in the Guardians den."
He was surprised by how formal the kit was, but decided not to question it. "Oh... Okay?" he stumbled over his words with uncertainty, looking towards Lizardstorm among her group of friends. The brown tabby looked up, and gave them a confused look.
"I know we don't have time, but I can't go bother a senior warrior!" Dawnkit whispered. Sunrise jumped. Was she talking to him? Every cat in the clan was often intrigued by Dawnkit and her oddness, but Sunrise had learned to respect it as a gift of her own, especially with all the interest the Guardians had in her. Dawnkit glared at Lizardstorm from across the camp, and the young warrior looked back at them. Only when Dawnkit jerked her head towards the Guardians den was when Sunrise pieced it together, and the she-cat scurried to her paws, her eyes darkening. "I'm sorry to bother you," Dawnkit began, her tail flicking self consciously, "but would you be able to get Swiftsky?" she finished, looking up at the warrior. Sunrise dithered beside her, his eyes flicking between the two she-cats.
Lizardstorm nodded, and meowed, almost to herself, "Why must this happen to us now?" Only when she tilted her head towards to sunlight did Sunrise see weariness on her features, reminding him all the sad feeling after the floods.
He thought of Riverfrost and Flamewing, the grief on their faces as they had heard of or seen Speckledleaf's death. Sunrise could remember now his mother's frightened face as the nursery had collapsed, the waters rising so that it washed into his face and eyes and made them sting. He had been bewildered as Mouseflower had carried him away from there, nudging him along with Rookrise. So much pain and misery had happened during the floods, and he had hated the feelings of sorrow that threatened to engulf him. He didn't want to have to feel that pain again of losing someone he loved or for the cats around him to feel it either.
"Sunrise!" Dawnkit's mew shook him out of his thoughts. "We need to focus now," she hissed, prodding his side with a paw. His fur bristled at the impact, but he forced his fur to relax. Dawnkit's eyes narrowed, and he knew that she somehow knew what he was thinking. Sunrise allowed his face to relax also, making sure his emotions stayed a secret. "You need to help Lizardstorm now. I'm just a kit, but you can make sure she is too sad," her breath stirred his ear fur, and when he turned, he was surprised to see the intensity of her pale blue eyes.
Lizardstorm edged into his view again, with Swiftsky behind her, and the duo began walking slowly towards the Guardians den. Dawnkit followed them, her tail flicking Sunrise's side to get him to follow. Silently they filed into the Guardians den, and Sunrise saw Ebonypool curled up in her nest, Emberblaze and Lyrastar leaning over her anxiously. Swiftsky sat beside his mate on the same side as Emberblaze, his gaze glistening with grief. Lizardstorm sat on the other side of her, awkwardly perched next to Lyrastar. The leader's gaze flashed towards Sunrise and Dawnkit, and he sat beside Lizardstorm, being cautious of the brown tabby.
All six of them watched solemnly, and then Emberblaze gently whispered, "I'll give you a poppy seed, so that you may find comfort here, where we are united to support you in these moments." Sunrise followed their interactions with dismay, but was glad Emberblaze was calm for all of them, and that Lyrastar was silently supporting them. He knew Emberblaze struggled with death, and as Sunrise caught his eye they shared a nod. They both knew the pain of losing someone they loved, and they had blood ties to bring them together.
The only sound was Ebonypool's wheezing breath. Then Swiftsky spoke. "I love you my darling," he solemnly told her, taking a shaky breath then continuing, "Don't forget that we always will." Swiftsky touched his nose to her's briefly, his eyes shimmering with emotion. The black she-cat gave a weak purr before breaking into a harsh cough, her body trembling, before she fell back in her nest.
"Goodbye, my old friend. May you find swift running, safe hunting, and good shelter where ever you sleep. We all will honour you for countless seasons," Lyrastar murmured, just loud enough for all of them to hear.
"You are the best mother I could ever have, and I will never forget you," Lizardstorm told Ebonypool, licking her mother's cheek.
One last purr left her frail body, and the amber eyes of the old warrior glowed with so many emotions of joy and love. Sunrise remembered his own mother again, and the same feelings of happiness he had experienced then. Then her pelt shuddered one last time, and Ebonypool was no longer with them. Sunrise thought he saw the black warrior, her pelt shining and sleek once more, step away from her lifeless body and dip her head, but when he blinked there was only the silence of the den.
Dawnkit's eyes shone with the stars, and he knew she must have seen her as well. Her eyes were solemn, and in serious tones she began, "She will now be at peace. Let us honour the noble life she has lead with us, and remember her for her wisdom and devotion," and Sunrise felt more grief in the air once more, and dipped his head to honour Ebonypool, as well as every life that had passed in CosmoClan's time.
Lizardstorm trembled beside him, and he felt her slump down beside him. "It's okay, I'm here," he reassured her, pressing his pelt against hers. She relaxed a little, but her fur still quivered with emotion and she was hardly composed, her face turned to the ground to hide her feelings. Sunrise wasn't sure what else to do, so he continued sitting beside her, hoping that she would not be saddened with friends and family sitting around her, making her feel welcome.
The only cats he had after Speckledleaf died were Blossomrise and Rookrise, despite the sympathy of the camp, along with a few members of understanding family and friends. He understood why Blossomrise sought help in Flamewing, despite his misgivings. He knew why Rookrise surrounded herself with friends and joyful words. They understood, all three of them, the pain of losing a loved one, and in that moment, he didn't want anyone else to feel the sadness that still rippled across his life.
When the sun began to slip behind the distant hills, Lyrastar called a clan meeting. Ebonypool's body was lain for vigil in the centre of camp, and once more Sunrise remembered the noble warrior. The cats that had been in the den were gathered round close, even Dawkit, who might have been considered too young to see the ceremony.
Emberblaze was sat beside Swiftsky, looking up to the darkening skies and studying each star closely. Sunrise knew he would be looking for Blossomfur and Speckledleaf tonight, as well as Ebonypool's star. From his position, closest to Ebonypool's body, he could see the shadows in Emberblaze's weary eyes, and realised the old warrior must have hardly slept. He wished he could have been sitting near his kin, but with all the cats in the clan gathered that would not be possible.
Lizardstorm was still beside him, having followed him like a shadow to where Ebonypool's body was now lain. He had shared a rabbit with her earlier outside the overhang, and she seemed to have appreciated his company, but with both of them saying only few words it was not a conversation, but he didn't mind. He had been studying the skies then, and now Lizardstorm was too, and he wondered if she was also searching like Emberblaze was now.
The vigil began. Lyrastar said a few words, her eyes watering, before leaving the top of the rock to sit by her friend with her head bowed. It was saddening to know that the first clan meeting Lyrastar was conducting after her illness was a funeral, and Sunrise felt sympathy for the leader at how she was able to lead the clan despite her sadness. Cats said their goodbyes and then left for their dens, and Sunrise had shivered as the cold night air began to descend. Swiftsky, Emberblaze and Lyrastar were beside her, as were Lizardstorm and himself, but more cats had stayed with them. Dustfeather and Goldenwhisker, one of the first cats that had seen Ebonypool and the she-cat's apprentice, had stayed, along with a pawful of the senior warriors. Sunrise observed as Lionscorch sat beside Lyrastar, both of them gazing at their paws, while Leopardeyes sat beside Blazeheart, and she meowed something to him shyly.
Sunrise felt as though he should leave, his eyes flicking from side to side as he observed the senior warriors paying their respects, Thunderbird and Owlwing as they said their goodbyes to the old warrior, and Berrystone and Robinrise as they began to slip away with one cautious glance at Lizardstorm. He thought to go up and leave with them, and rose to his paws as the last of the clan who were not staying up for the vigil left.
"Stay, please," Lizardstorm quietly told him, looking up as he began to leave. Sunrise was surprised - he hadn't thought he had helped that much, but now Lizardstorm was looking at him with more emotion in her eyes than he had seen since the morning. He nodded, and sat beside her again. He noticed the depth of gratitude in her green eyes, and wondered if she truly did appreciate his company; the warrior had barely noticed him before until now, so he was a little disbelieving. Sunrise understood she wanted his support though, and held long, cold vigil at her side.
Above them, the stars shined, welcoming a new warrior to their skies. He hoped that Speckledleaf would be among them and watching over her family from the sky.
