frosty leaves crunch quietly under your paws as you follow firefly-lit paths through the dark forest. the air is quiet, trees missing that familiar birdsong you got so used to back home. the insects buzz their own song to make up for it, but you still feel on edge... especially, when the fireflies lead you towards a clearing full of frantic mumbling.

xxxxx✦ "hello...?" your voice comes cautious, not quite trusting whoever's in the shadows.

a rustle and a soft light leads you to a tan cat, digging around in the bushes with a firefly jar in the grass next to them. they lift their head, soft black eyes widening at the sight of a stranger. when they speak, they sound just as uncertain.

xxxxx✦ "uh, hi..? sorry, um, I'm not.. able to talk, i'm looking for my friends," they mutter, as they stick their head back into the bushes.

it's pitch black when you see turtledove again, no firefly jars to be found. you're only led to them by the sound of frantic muttering and you have to clear your throat to catch their attention. there's a rustle of grass when they jump in surprise.

xxxxx✦ "traveler? is that you?"

when you make a noise of confirmation, you can hear turtledove hurry closer through the dark. they nudge your shoulder so you know where they are.

xxxxx✦ "oh, thank goodness, i was worried you got hurt! there's something running around destroying everything, a-all my birds are missing again... i'll find them, it's okay! but you should probably get somewhere safe..."

Turtledove needs help!

it's late... you think it is, anyway. the crickets seem to have grown tired of chirping all through the dark day, and now only the wind provides any background noise. at least that means there's no surprise when someone steps up next to you, clearing their throat nervously.

xxxxx✦ "um.. hi. it's me. are you busy?" turtledove asks, tilting their head.

when you answer no, they seem to relax a little.

xxxxx✦ "okay, um, that's good. i was wondering if you've seen any birds today..? if i know what you've seen, maybe i could find them easier..."
