Clan: The Bronze Fleet Prompt:A long time ago, in the middle of the great sea, a princess roamed deep beneath the surface. Her coat was scaled, her paws webbed, and her tail was like that of a shark. Little light penetrated the depths in which her kingdom lay, so her people's eyes were near blind. However, this princess snuck close to the surface frequently and over the years her eyes adapted the the transition and she could see the wonderful colors of the world above.
The princess envied the cats who crossed the seas on their boats, with lungs to breathe the air and fur that blows in the wind. Paws that were padded so they could walk on the dirt and stones without pain. Most of all, she envied their freedom. While she could swim through every sea in the world, she would never be able to explore the land. And her duties as a princess meant she could never cross the seas either. Her swims the surface were as close as she'd ever get to exploration.
One day, her father's attendant caught her sneaking out the the surface. She was reprimanded when she returned and punished by being confined to her room and being escorted by guards when she was outside. Her frustration grew and when an elderly she-cat offered her an escape, she took it without consideration for the consequences. As she tapped their paws together in the traditional sign of agreement, the water around her turned bright, unfamiliar colors. The princess' eyes had not had time to adjust before she was shot through the water, up to the surface, and thrown into the air. She landed with a thud on hard wood.
Blearily blinking her eyes that felt heavy, she tried to move but her body responded strangely. Rather than swimming herself right-side up, her limbs flailed around her. She looked up and saw that she was surrounded by surface-cats and sitting on a boat. She looked down and saw that her scales had become fur and her paws were severed into toes inside of joined together with webbing. She worked intently on standing and eventually managed to. She realized then that the cats around her were talking, their voices and language very different from her home.
The cats accepted her tentatively and taught her to be like them. Over time, she and a sailor fell in love. They were planning to get married. However, the sea-witch who'd given the princess her new form was jealous and angry. She had hoped that the princess would be rejected and treated badly and the witch could have swept in as her savior, with the princess in her debt, begging at her feet to be returned to her true form.
On the day of the wedding, the witch summoned a great storm that caused the sailor to fall overboard, and she turned the sobbing princess into sea foam, cursing her to float mournfully atop the sea, separated from her love even in death.
