“Come on Lychee! We’re guards we aren’t supposed to be fishing through ice! We weren’t ever trained to do this! It’s cold to and I wanna go back home!” Mulberryclaw whined as he followed his older sister to the river. He winced as he placed a paw on the ice feeling it crack beneath. It was so chilly too. The wind blew through his fur sending chill down his spine. Mulberryclaw sighed seeing Lycheesong looked determined to try and do whatever idea she had in mind. “How are you even gonna do this anyways? There’s no way fish are swimming beneath us right at this moment!”

Lycheesong just laughed as she sat down and licked her paws. “Chill little bro. I got this! We might be guards but doesn’t mean we can’t hunt! Persimmon was excellent at this when he was in the clan! So we should be able to do the same.”

“Persimmon was a hunter not a guard! He was trained more in hunting!” Mulberryclaw replied with a frustrated groan.

“Hey hey we’ll be fine! Come on just follow my lead!” Lycheesong finally took the step forward onto the slippery cold ice. She tapped her paw on the surface and fully stepped on. Seemed stable in the area she was in. She smiled as she walked out further and was soon halfway across the river. She looked back and smiled. “Now all we gotta do it-“ with a whack of her paw, she broke the ice but in result the ice around her also cracked. Lycheesong yowled as she leapt away just in time before she fell in. Only her tail was dipped into the frozen waters. A little shaken up as she looked back from the shore aside her brother.

“I told you. See a natural hunter would be able to do that. Can we finally go back now? You clearly can’t fish…” Mulberryclaw grumbled before he lead the way before receiving an answer.

↬ prompt: Magpiepaw, Sleetgaze, and Hollyhockgrowl had all gone out together not far from camp. Sleetgaze was sniffing out any herbs she could find in the cold weather, trying to prove Mountaindrift wrong about no herbs growing so close to leafbare. Hyancinthpool had taught him many moons ago that some herbs, like juniper berries or sweet-sedge, can still grow in the colder temperatures. While he still had some vision, letting a blind cat out during the first frost was almost unheard of in Aetherclan. He didn't mind, and actually appreciated having Hollyhockgrowl around. Magpiepaw... less so. His annoyance with Magpiepaw grew to an infuriating level that day specifically, as he bounded across Sleetgaze's path while he was scenting out some herbs. Sleetgaze was fed up with the apprentice, growling at him to go somewhere else. While Hollyhockgrowl reprimanded Sleetgaze for being too harsh, the pair heard yowling from not far away. Sleetgaze was off like lightning, bolting across the frozen ground. Hollyhockgrowl was hot on his paws, crying out with fear once they reached the source of the yowling. Magpiepaw had been testing out the ice, wanting to try and break through to catch a fish. However, he hadn't considered that the ice had not had time to fully harden closer to the center of the pond. The ice had cracked under his back paws, and now he was struggling to pull himself back to safety. Sleetgaze's eyes hardened as he boldly stepped onto the ice, ears pricked for the sounds of cracking ice. His pawsteps were slow, deliberate. He growled at Magpiepaw to stop struggling, advising him to just tread water with his back paws instead. The black and white cat listened dutifully, trying to calm himself. Finally, Sleetgaze was close enough to grab the apprentice's scruff and drag him to solid ice. Magpiepaw's back legs spasmed uncontrollably, worrying Hollyhockgrowl. The trio quickly rushed back to the clan, where Magpiepaw made a complete recovery.

"Rats!" She coughed out through the smoke.
The sky grew grey as she looked around wildly. Under her paws the earth grew hot, as though it might crack open at any given moment. On this barren surface the glowing earth threatened to char anything that even grew close, and somehow, Amberblitz had wandered her way right into a thin slice of earth, harbouring a lake of lava beneath it. "Flamecatcher, don't come any closer!!" She looked at her paws, where glowing cracks were beginning to open up. Their scorching embrace begging to envelop her.
"This is BAD... Real BAD..." Flamecatcher whispered already fighting panic. He could see the steam beginning to seep from the earth below her paws, if he couldnt think quickly she was done for!
With his heart racing he wildly looked about searching for any way to save Amberblitz. But then it caught his eye, as he watched closely there was section of rock that seemed to not falter, "Its not like I have any other option..." With a heavy inhale, he launched towards Amberblitz shoving her into the safe rocky outcropping, and if it wasn't for the gentle lift by his balloon he would have singed his tail!
With a relieved sigh Amberblitz nudged Flamecatcher with her head "I'm sorry, I got so focused on our journey I didn't realise that was thin rock!"
Flamecatcher lightly laughed, "It's alright Amberblitz, I know you're just trying to keep me on my toes"
The two laughed together as they ventured further into their molten home.

↬ prompt: The last frog of the season. Meadowbird could feel the chill in the air, the threat of the snow on the horizon. The frost had already covered the individual blades of grass each morning, and it was only a matter of time before all the frogs were hiding from the snow until spring would come again and the thaw would happen. Meadowbird always dreaded this moment, because she loved watching the frogs. Seeing them hop, watching them swim - they were so graceful, so energetic, and so cute!

This was the reason Meadowbird found herself on a frozen stream, not realizing how slippery it was until she was stuck in the middle. The frog was beneath her, swimming in the chilly water, running away from her as it was afraid she would eat it. Of course, she didn't try to make a habit of eating the frogs she loved to watch so dearly. Especially this close to the end of frog season.

The frog was long gone now. It had swam away from her, into the safety of wherever it called home. She knew in her mind and heart that that was it, the last frog before the snows - and she definitely knew it now as she perched precariously on the thin ice beneath her.

Surely I can get out of this if I move slowly, Meadowbird thought, letting her paws slide a little bit toward the edge. A light cracking noise sounded beneath her, and she gritted her teeth, waiting for the worst. But nothing happened - at least not yet. Another small movement. And then another. She was almost back to the edge! One more step and....

crack!

The ice finally gave way underneath her, and Meadowbird found herself stomach deep in the frigid water. She let out a laugh in both exasperation and exhilaration, and waded the rest of the way out. When she got back, her fur had frozen into little icicles that hung off of her fur, much to the confused looks of her clanmates. But she just smiled at them, and went to go get warm in her nest.

Lubokoyongo, ‘boko’ for short, felt her heart thumping in her chest. It was over, no one believed Manzi when she claimed that Boko had killed Nuani. But still, she felt herself shiver from nerves. She had done it after all… was it just a matter of time before the other cats realized? Between the cold and the shivering and the stress, she was reminded of being a kit.

It had been a day with just her and her parent, Diabulu. Diabulu was unusual but this fact would only strike Boko later, when she realized the true nature of her parent. For now though, in this memory, it was just the two of them out in the snow. It never snowed in the Buala but they were up on a mountain now and she was discovering how the white tops to the mountains were not white rock or white trees, rather a powdery substance called ‘snow.’ Boko had just found a frozen lake. She had been in shock and awe how the nature of water could be tamed and crystallized until it was hard under the paws. It still glowed though when the sun hit it just right. She had been too enthusiastic and had remembered running out in the center of the frozen lake, despite her parent’s warnings. The ice had shifted and cracked and tossed and turned and Boko had squealed and jumped, running swiftly back to shore and leaving a trail of broken ice behind her. She had remembered Diabulu holding her closely and telling her to never run off like that again, how dangerous it could be and how she always needed to think, that she was deeply impulsive.

And Boko had not learned. She remembered the impulse to shove Nuani until Nuani was just another animal lost to a storm-swollen river. She could feel herself shivering now and it was the same feeling as when she got back to shore that one day. She was safe, but how long until she would do something else?

↬ prompt: Eaglestar woke up early in the morning, feeling the chill of leafbare even through the thick brambles of his den. Some cats might be annoyed at waking up before the sun was visible, especially when it's cold, but leafbare was actually one of Eaglestar's favorite seasons. Yes, the prey was more scarce. Yes, sickness was more common. But Eaglestar loved the snow that covered the ground, hopping in the snow just to make a bunch of paw prints. He also enjoyed the frozen lakes and rivers, so much so that he had a little tradition. As soon as he noticed the big lake near his territory was solid ice, he'd walk onto it and start sliding around. It was nice to be able to relax and slowly spin around, watching the trees sway in the wind.

Eaglestar thought his tradition was something silly, though. He thought his rogues would call him names or compare him to a kit. He needed to seem strong and courageous to the rogues, not a cat that liked to spin on ice. So he had to go early in the morning when no other (sane) cat would be awake.

Silently exiting his den, Eaglestar made his way to the camp entryway. He stayed near the shadows, trying to get as much cover as he could. Another reason he loved winter was that he could blend in more easily, but when it's so dark, fur stands out more than snow. But, eventually, he made it out to the lake. Not wanting to waste any time, Eaglestar jumped onto the ice, smiling at the cold underneath his paws. As he made his way to the center, he heard a terrifying crack!

Whipping his head around, Eaglestar's heart dropped as he noticed that, right where he had jumped onto the lake, there was a huge hole. Seems that, in his excitement, Eaglestar had come to the lake too soon. The ice was thin, way too thin to support Eaglestar. He had to get off this lake, fast, before he found himself submerged and possibly trapped under the ice. Already, the death-threatening crack raced closer to him. He scrambled to turn around, trying to keep himself from tripping. The one thing he enjoyed, coming back to taunt him. The slippery ground made it so much harder to get to the other side of the lake, only a few more feet away.

Eaglestar chanced a quick glance behind him and saw the crack of ice inches away from his back feet. Eyes widening, Eaglestar jumped to the shoreline, claws out to try and anchor himself to the ground should he miss. But luckily, he made it. Part of his tail had dipped into the water, but that was fine. Nothing a quick shake couldn't fix. Staring at the now split ice, Eaglestar wondered when the ice would get cold (and thick) enough to slide on. If he could get enough courage to go back on ice ever again.

↬ prompt: Thorn shivered as stood as still as possible. The ice underneath her creaked, threatening to collapse and send her into the freezing waters. How had she gotten here, you might be wondering?

The black and white feline had been prowling the winter forests as usual, having drawn the short straw once again. She would swear that it was rigged if not for the fact that she knew Captain Treble would never do that. She just had bad luck, it seems. She pulled her fur coat more tightly around her. Her four-legged form had thin fur so she did this patrol on two legs. The white coat blended into the snow and smelled faintly of smoke from drying it by the fire after the last patrol. It had a stronger smell of her husband's scent, he had used it last and the scent helped keep her mind off of the cold.

A cry pierced the dark wintery evening and Thorn's attention was pulled away from her coat, looking for the source of the sound. It was a cry of pain and fear. The snow coating the ground meant that it could not be far, the deadening effect of the snow reduced the distance sound would reach. Looking intensely across the white landscape, she saw movement not too far away. She ran towards it, not realizing that the snow covered not only the ground, but a thinly frozen lake between her and the distressed creature.

Now, Thorn found herself stuck. Unable to stay still for too long or risk the ice beneath her giving way, but unable to move for the fear that her step would be enough to break the thin ice around her. And the cries grew only weaker a short distance away.

    ↬ prompt:

"c'mon, c'mon!" a gleeful voice echoes through the freshly frosted air, laughter bubbling from just behind the treeline.

another bout of giggles and two young felines tumble out into the sun's gentle embrace with all the grace of spindly newborn fawns. they roll into the snow in a bundle limbs, short of breath from exhaustion and exhilaration. "wh-where are you even t-taking me, coco?!" one manages between gasps as he rights himself. his pale face is reddened with winter flush and hints of blush, eyes wide and sparkling, soaking in the sight before him.

his best friend grins up from beneath him, equally flushed, cherry-tinted chocolate against powder-white. his heart pounds in his chest. his breath stills, crystalline in the air, softened gaze lingering a moment too long, before he hops aside sheepishly and offers the other a paw.

cocoa accepts, a knowing look in his eyes as he pulls himself upright.

instead of letting go, he inches closer. vanillabean's gaze flicks up in timid confusion. he glances down at his paw, still held fast in the other's grasp, and then back up at his friend. "wh—?"

"you trust me, right nilla?" cocoa hums, sliding his paw up his arm and to his shoulder before vanilla can even process what's happening.

he blinks. "w-well of course," he starts, sputtering a little at the sudden shift in tone. and he means it. truly, he does. there was no one else he'd rather run their bakery with, no one else he'd rather spend every moment of every day with. he'd never choose anyone but cocoa.

"then believe me when i say you're gonna love it. it's just a little further, i promise."

and with that and a grin and a little wink, he turns tail and scampers off, sending puffs of powdered snow up into the air in his wake. "catch me if you can!"

"oh, you little—!" vanilla narrows his eyes, giving chase.

the snow gradually gives way to speckled sand—though vanilla hardly notices in the midst of the chase—and suddenly, the other slides to a stop.

"i've got you now!" he exclaims, tackling cocoa and sending the two of them rolling to the ground once more. this time, there's less of a pillow to break their fall. the sand scrapes softly at vanilla's paw pads, drawing his gaze down to the cat trapped beneath him for the second time today.

a smirk flits across cocoa's face. "care to get off me?"

"u-uh!" vanilla stammers, blush creeping onto his features once again as he lifts the other up to his feet.

"y'know, if you wanted a hug that badly, all you had to do was ask," cocoa teases, continuing before the other can get a word in edgewise. "we're here, by the way!" he motions at the scene before them.

even with the slowly increasing intensity of the cold the past few years, the ocean near jadeclan's shoreline bazaar had never once frozen over. yet here they stood now, the once-shifting waters replaced with glistening ice, sun reflecting off its mirror-like surface in rays of refracted rainbow.

"it... it's beautiful." he blinks, pure awe in his voice. the other might not have noticed, having turned to take in the view again, but it wasn't just the ice vanilla was talking about.

each breath cocoa took rose up through his chest and out of his snow-spotted pink nose, sending snowflakes spiraling around him; each flick of an ear betrayed his hidden nerves, desperately hoping for approval; each glance back at him shone with a thousand stars, the sky above bathing his entire being in a warm light.

      he was absolutely glowing.

"well come on, what are you waiting for?" cocoa beckons, twining their tails together and leading him down to the edge of the ice.

the holiday season's just begun and it's already more perfect than i could ever imagine, with you here by my side to experience it too...

by the end of this year, this boy will be mine, cocoa vows, smile practically radiating his delight as they take a careful first few steps out onto the glittering blue and vanilla gathers the courage to dip him into a playful spin.

whether the other knew that yet or not, well, that was nothing he needed to worry about. he would soon enough, and that was a promise he'd be sure to fulfill.

↬ prompt: Winter was always a rough month for most clans. The Heart of Decay, however, actually prefers Winter over Spring, since the rain shows that Spring brings forces them to relocate all their resources and dens higher up to avoid floodings.

The highlight of winter for cats in the Heart of Decay, and also the part that makes it hard at times, is the large river freezing over. The youthful ones enjoy it, but the medicine cats who need to tend to injuries with wet moss have a much harder time doing so.

But it was Envy and Onyx's kits first winter. The way the snow shined off the surface entranced the kits - so much so, that it led Crow and his little sister, Ruby, outside of the camp. Crow disappearing for a few hours at a time was pretty normal, and well.. Ruby would always tag along. His mothers had faith he would keep the two of them safe.

Of course, not all the cats of the clan trusted this. And so, one adult cat, unknown to them, trailed closely behind, hiding behind trees out of sight. Crow stopped before the river, his eyes twinkling in curiosity.

"Ruby, the river looks funky, doesn't it?" Crow asked, his head turning to peer over his shoulder.

"It looks like.. stuck. It's not moving like it normally does!" Ruby moved forward, moving to place her paw in the water.

"Woah! That's gonna be too cold!" Crow moved his paw underneath Ruby's, the cool feeling of ice stinging his pawpads. "Wait. It's not wet!" Crow's paw slid back and forth across the ice for a moment. "What is this stuff?!"

"Well, if I can't fall into the water..." Ruby dramatically stepped backwards, kicking up dust behind her before taking off, lunging herself onto the ice. She stumbled onto her stomach, spinning in a circle a few times before stopping. She then rolled onto her back, laughing loudly. "Crow! You gotta try it! It's so fun!"

Watching Ruby spin about unpredictably was enticing. Soon after, Crow got a running start as well. He stumbled onto the ice, and eventually crashed into Ruby, the two laughing as they slid even further. Crow tried to get to his paws once his momentum slowed, but stumbled back down. "This stuff is slick!" He yipped, followed by more laughter. His ears then perked forward towards his sister - he had heard something. A rumble, a... crack?

"Uh... Crow?" Ruby asked, looking down beneath her paws. As she uttered his name, the ice fell beneath her, the molly plunging into the cold water below.

"RUBY!!!" Crow yelled, and without hesitation, he dove into the cold water after her. The cold burned, his eyes stung as he scoured the water for her, his eyes wide in fear. Oh Stars, how could he have let this happen? He'd never be able to face his mothers again if Ruby was gone. If any of her sisters were gone. He'd never forgive himself.

The air in his lungs was draining quickly, and as his eyes finally met Ruby's silhouette, his vision became blurred. He suddenly regained his vision in shock as a spiraling blue light appeared before him, a paw reaching out. Crow swam towards it, and after grabbing Ruby by the scruff, wrapped his front paws around the paw. He was pulled through, and when they emerged, they sat atop a tree branch, the two kits shivering.

Before them was a silver molly, her blue gaze fixated on the kits. "You're lucky I was here!" She hissed.

"Lily! We didn't know the water was underneath it!" Crow wailed. He then turned to Ruby, who was shivering, and appeared unconscious. "Is she going to be okay?"

"Yes. She will be. We need to get back to camp though."

And that was the day Crow learned NOT to go onto thin ice, especially with his family involved.

Life on a horse farm was far from normal for Echoclan, not only did they have to navigate and avoid the horses but the humans as well.. Although they trusted the humans to some extent, after all, they did allow the clan to live in one of the old barns, and in the winter would even leave out food for them, it wasn't the best food but when you were hungry it was better than starving. on very cold nights they would even bring out these little huts that kept the cats warm. But this winter something was different, the water trough nearby that was always full of fresh water had frozen over. and Nala being the curious cat, having never seen snow or ice before leaped onto the side of the trough, she pawed at the ice trying to remove it but nothing happen, confused she placed her paws into the ice and scratched at it, all of a sudden the ice began to crack under her paws and she froze, what was going on?

Suddenly, the ice gave way, and she plunged into the icy water, her thick fur instantly becoming drenched in the icy water. She yawled and attempted to climb out, but her paws kept slipping on the ice. Lucky for her, one of the nearby humans noticed her struggle and ran over, plucking her up out of the water. They quickly carried her inside where they helped her cry off, and after a quick nap by the fireplace they open the door letting her run out and rejoin her friends with the tale of her adventure
