He committed a dastardly crime, maybe, and got thrown into prison. Maybe he was the victim of one of the recent murders. Or, perhaps he'd simply left Treviden without telling anyone.

It would seem that, after losing his father, it would've been expected for him to be the one breaking down on his first day at the orphanage, with the other children trying to console him in a lonely new world. Instead, Oreste was putting his hand on the shoulder of a girl, about his age, who'd introduced herself earlier. Just a moment ago, she accidentally swung a door open, hitting the pendant that sat on a string around Oreste's neck. It broke into two distinct pieces, a million tinier ones flying out in every direction, scattering just as dust in the wind.

“Touch is an important thing.
Creatures of all sizes and all shapes need touch in some way. It is said that babies mature at a faster rate with the more nurturing they receive. Physical contact can relieve stress, and has been linked to healthier lives. Of course, touch is not imediately available for everyone, and isn’t easy to cope with for some. This will sound far-fetched at first, but will make more sense the further we progress. A patient we have had for 13 years has revealed to us that she kept a diary her entire time receiving treatment, and even a little bit before. This book is full of her innermost thoughts, and emotions. Today, I will be reading it to you.”

The students gathered in the auditorium buzzed with excitement, laptops and tablets at the ready to type notes from the once-in-a-lifetime lecture. A few kalons even held tapes in their paws, ready to record the whole thing. This case had been a hot topic on campus for months.
