FRONTIER - The Sentinels

The Sentinels have set up a makeshift camp in the Thundering Prairie. On the crest of a hill is a crudely assembled questboard, made by Mutt himself. He is obviously proud of his creation, signalling you to approach with a flick of his tail. "Howdy there. As more cats find their way to the Frontier, naturally, more problems start arising. But I ain't much for standing around complaining. And I figure if you got paws and half a brain, you can help me out in making sure troublemakers get what they deserve."

The Sentinels are a vigilante group formed and led by Mutt, focused on maintaining peace and delivering justice to the Frontier, through whatever means necessary. Completing quests for the Sentinels can award positive or negative reputation with the group, depending on how you complete the quest. Your reputation with other groups can also be affected. Your reputation has an effect on quest rewards and NPC interactions.

Questing/adventuring is similar to DnD. You are free to interact with the world and characters in whatever way you would like to complete the quest, with the NPC character (in this case, Mutt) there to keep you on track and offer hints or suggestions if needed. The DM ("dungeon master", in DnD terms) will respond and use a d20 to determine successes and failures.

You will be able to engage in turn-based combat, with the results determined by rolling a d20. Your character may be injured in combat, which will earn you a Scar Ticket to allow you to request an artist to add a scar to your cat, or you can request to be added to the image to draw it yourself.

When you are doing an adventure/quest, there is no posting cooldown, so you can reply immediately. Once your adventure/quest ends, you will have to wait a week (7 days) before starting a new one. (The cooldown applies only to the faction you have just finished a quest for.) Unless otherwise noted, quests can only be completed once.

Quest Board
1. Blood in the Sand (note- this is intended as an introduction to questing. you can complete this quest once with one cat.)
The Redsun Desert has remained mostly uninhabited due to its harsh climate and lack of resources; however, rumors have begun to spread of a hidden paradise within the desert. Cats have begun to flock to the desert in hopes of staking their claim on that precious land. Many don't make it very far into the desert, but those who do have found themselves the victims of a bandit group.

Mutt has traveled to the desert to end the threat, but he can't do it alone. A bounty has been placed on the bandits; the Sentinels are offering a reward to any cat that is willing to assist Mutt.

You find Mutt at the edge of the desert. With him is a bedraggled group of cats, all of them with fresh wounds and defeat in their eyes. When you approach, Mutt greets you with a small nod.

Image
"Howdy there, thanks for offering to lend a paw. A group of bandits has ambushed some innocent cats venturing into the desert, stealing their supplies and leaving them in rough shape. We've got to get their supplies back, and teach those rogues we ain't gonna tolerate that typa dishonorable behavior. We should probably get as much information from these poor fellas as we can before we start searching."

Response:

The scent of old wounds made Crowl's nose crinkle. He recognized Mutt's scent. But there were several others he didn't recognize.

The massive tom padded closer, his tufted ears pricked with interest. His gaze trailed over the group, taking in their sorry state. How big a group were they squaring up against? He returned Mutt's greeting with a nod of his own.
"It's no trouble. I wish I'd known sooner."

The sight of the bedraggled group made his fur prickle. His grey gaze softened in sympathy. No good rogues..."I'm not about to tolerate anything like this. They'll learn quick this isn't how we do things here." Crowl paused, assessing the group before facing Mutt again. "Just tell me what you need. I'll see it done."

"Much obliged," Mutt said quietly, voice roughened by dust and heat. "Means more'n you know."

One of the injured cats shifted behind him, wincing. "I don't know how many there were; it happened so fast," the cat spoke wearily. "We were heading south, just past the rock formation over there, when we heard a voice calling for help. We went to check it out, and they ambushed us. They must have been hiding in the rocks... then they just vanished."

"We're gonna have to track 'em down and deal with them." A faint, dangerous edge crept into Mutt's tone. "How we do that… well. I reckon we'll decide once we see what kind of cats we're dealin' with. I'll let you take the lead on this. What should we do first?"

Talonclaw approached Mutt with a respectful nod, “Breezeclan doesn’t look kindly to bandits, cowards who prey on the weak” he spat as he looked upon the injured cats tending their wounds. He took a step closer, “alright, start talking, how many, where’d they come from and which way they go?” He rattled off, his voice tense and his claws tightened, he was already prepared for a fight. His tail flicked with impatience and the cats turned at him, their eyes wide and slightly nervous.

“Hey, easy now, they’ve been through enough already, no need to frighten them even more,” a much softer voice came from behind Talonclaw. His mate, Willowmist brushed up against his side and wrapped her tail around his, and his demeanour softened in response and his claws relaxed.

Talonclaw let out a slow breath, his body relaxed but the fire in his eyes did not waver, “you are safe now, help us and we will make sure those filthy bandits don’t hurt you or anyone else again.” His eyes trailed off behind them into the desert, “the longer we wait… the further they get.”

Crowl gave it some thought, furrowing his brow and hollowing his cheeks. The rogues were taking whatever supplies these cats had. He didn't want to risk them losing anything more, especially in the state they were in.
"Let the injured recover at my camp. While we're there, we'll take some of my supplies," he rumbled, tilting his head back the way he'd come, "and use it as bait. Like drawing a badger from its hole, they'll come. Let them take it, then follow the scent back to their hideout. We can see about setting up an ambush of our own, and driving these bullies out once and for all."

It was a familiar sight. Cats huddled together, wounded, afraid. It dredged up memories she tried her best to forget. The calico hadn't exactly planned on coming upon this scene. They had taken a detour through the Red Sun to avoid The Crescent. Some things were better left alone. Now she found herself facing what felt like her own past. The fur along her spine bristled, and their green eyes were fixed a little too intently. There was an unreadable expression on their face.
"I can't.. but I will keep my eyes open. I will pass along what information I find." their voice was low, just above a whisper, "I struck across that merchant. Packed enough supplies before I left. I'll.. leave what I bought. They need water. And poultices. It isn't much, but it's something immediate."

Looking around at the injured cats before them, Ferretfang felt smaller than ever. Maybe this wasn’t a good idea, maybe they shouldn’t have come... No, they were here already, no sense in turning back. It would have been a waste of a trip and a waste of herbs.

"Um, of course," they said, setting their bundle of plants and cobwebs down at their paws. "I, uh, brought some stuff for bleeding, just in case, um..." The young cat trailed off, feeling foolish, then picked up the herbs again to offer them to the wounded cats. When they had heard they'd be helping Mutt get rid of some bandits, they had only gathered yarrow and cobwebs for quick and simple wound care. I really should have brought more, probably some for pain, for infection maybe...

"Where were you when you were attacked, exactly?" Ferretfang asked the group, interrupting their own thoughts.

Then out of nowhere, a bunch of cats appeared. It happened so fast, we couldn't defend ourselves."

Mutt shook his head in disbelief. "Hard to believe some cats are so dishonorable," he muttered, then glanced over at Talonclaw. "What do you reckon we should do first?"

He squared his shoulders, stance solid and certain. "Alright, Crowl. We do it your way. Get the wounded settled, lay the trap, and then we teach these bullies a lesson they won't forget. Lead the way to your camp."

Mutt noticed the way the calico stiffened, the way their gaze lingered just a heartbeat too long on the huddled cats. He didn't press, just gave a gentle nod. "That's more than enough," he said quietly. "I can get them patched up."

One of the injured cats gave Sprite a small smile. "Thank you, that's very kind."

Mutt narrowed his eyes as he scanned his surroundings. He turned to Sprite. "Mind keeping watch for a moment? Never know if they'll try and come back."

Mutt turned as Ferretfang stepped forward, and whatever hard edge he'd been carrying softened at the sight of the carefully bundled herbs. "You did good bringin' what you could," his voice steady and reassuring.

One of the wounded cats let out a shaky breath of relief as the herbs were offered. "Thank you," their voice shook as they spoke. "We were resting by those rocks just over there, when all of a sudden we were surrounded. We were so tired, we couldn't even defend ourselves."

Mutt lashed his tail in anger. "Those thieves will regret ever preying on innocent cats." He looked over at Ferretfang. "This won't be easy, but I believe we can handle this. How do you reckon we go about this?"

“Willowmist will stay here and help tend to your wounded,” Talonclaw responded to the injured cat who spoke before turning to Mutt, “What do you say we follow their trail? Find out if they can put an end to these bandits’ rein of terror once and for all? We’ll catch up to ‘em, teach ‘em a lesson they won’t soon forget, and get these folks back their stuff.” He said confidently, set in his decision.
