Alright, this is gonna be a bit of an info dump, but here's what I've got so far.
For starters, the mountain range they avoided actually circles the entire planet, at the equator. All of the planet's oceans have long since evaporated, leaving it with an atmosphere denser than that of Earth. There are still underground aquifers and springs which water can be drawn from, but it results in forests only occurring in sporadic pockets, as opposed to the large swathes present on earth. The planet would also have a slightly lower gravity than that of Earth, which, when combined with the denser atmosphere, would make it far easier to support larger forms of life. It would also make flight much easier, which would result in a large amount of airborne life, be it actual avian organisms, or organisms that employ some form of inflatable air sac to float. The life-forms that are confined to the ground would be largely bipedal, to maximize maneuverability, save for the largest organisms, which might employ more legs simply for stability. Where the seas once were, there would now be a large area of rocky spires, similar to the badlands of Utah on Earth. The weather would be considerably more unpredictable and dangerous as well, as winds would be caused by temperature differences generated by the sun, rather than by the oceans. The increased atmospheric density would also make echolocation a much more viable sensory technique, which would probably result in some, if not many creatures being able to use it to some degree. A majority of the biomes on the planet would be plains, deserts, and grasslands, with the "pocket forests" and the badlands being some of the exceptions. I have some ideas for some life forms, too, but i think it might be better to go over those as the characters find them.
*takes deep breath* Okay, that was most of it. What do you guys think?
