''Or we could use the back door. I think there are some supplies back there, but we'll have to climb the fence to get there... I didn't want to use it since I'm a bit too short for it, but you might manage to climb it without any problems...'' she said, realizing that this was the plan she discarded a few minutes ago, but there was nothing else she could come up with. Rune's mind was still pretty shaken and blank, and it was hard to focus without wanting to just slump onto the floor and stay there until she felt better, if she'd even feel better. A part of her was angry at her for being like this, she shouldn't be this shaken by a few drops of blood. Yes, they might belong to a person dear to her, but that didn't mean she could just lose herself in grim thoughts that could even turn out to be false, not to mention she wasn't alone here. Fabian was there and we could bet he didn't go with her on this mission to comfort her when things went wrong, also she wanted to keep her reputation of someone who's pretty much cold and detached from things like this. But, another part of her knew that the anger was wrong and that she couldn't just be heartless and cold. The old man was an uncle to her, an old and beloved friend, she couldn't just shrug it off. Rune let out a quiet sigh, feelings were such a drag sometimes and she wished she didn't even come up with coming here for help. The woman didn't even notice she let go of Avis's wrist and walked out of the house onto the fresh air, then she walked into the alley that was gaping the old house and the neighbour's and leaned against the wall. There was a barrel next to the wooden fence, so there might even be a chance of her making it over, once Fabian comes.

He let her walk away as he stood in the darkness, trying to make out any shapes through the shadows and listening carefully for any signs of movement. She would need time to think, to grasp her emotions and rein them in before she returned and they got on with the job at hand. If she was a close to this man as he thought, and if they found his dead body, then he would suggest putting their plan on hold. There was no point in trying to work with a heavy heart and blurred mind. Many good thieves had died with such things. He would not let her go the same way.

After a while, when he did not find anything, Avis turned back towards the open door and stepped outside. A quick glance told him where his partner was and then he spotted the barrel not far away. It would help him get over the high fence and into the garden at the back. How he'd get back was another matter but he'd cross that bridge when it came to it. In one smooth motion he was standing on the barrel (which was surprisingly unstable for a wooden barrel secured with steel) with his fingers over the top of the fence. He could just see over the top of the fence.

''No dice with it? Great...'' she said, crossing her arms. This was getting unbelievably difficult. While trying to solve one problem, another one appears out of nowhere and the woman was ready to just tell Avis to go back to the hideout. A final glance at the fence; wait. The boards, she noticed a few of them were not like the others and something finally rang in her head. As she started mentally cursing her forgetful mind, Rune walked to the fence and started removing the first three boards, trying not to knock Avis off of the unstable barrel. The boards were relatively easy to pull down, though it did require some strength out of her, but she managed to open a passage for herself and Fabian. ''I can't believe I forgot this. damn it, I'm slow...'' she muttered under her breath, putting the final board aside and passing through the opening. With a cat-like motion, she was on the other side of the fence, looking around.

The garden was nothing special; it was not filled with flowers or anything green for that matter, instead there were some barrels, rusty chains and other junk the old man collected over the years. Everything seemed to be in its place, and the woman walked to the back door, a very uncomfortable smell coming to her nose. She was almost certain there would be something bad behind those doors, but she still tried to open it anyways and when it wouldn't budge, she took out a lock pick. The first one broke immediately, the other one almost unlocked the door but broke, and the third eventually unlocked the old door. The woman stopped for a moment, fear itching in the back of her mind, but she had to know what was behind it. She had to know if she'll have to dig a grave tonight. With a deep breath, Rune pushed the door open, suddenly being splashed by and unbearable stench of a corpse. She stumbled backwards, caughing in disgust as she tried to get it out of her lungs. Luckily, that was not her old friend, just some man in a guard's attire and it brought relief to her, but by the looks of it (and smell), that body was there for some time. ''Ok, that's not him.'' she said with a caugh, ''He's not here anymore, we pretty much wasted our time... though I guess there are some papers upstairs, something that could help us. If he didn't take them...'' she said, her voice trailing off as she rubbed her head and let out a final cough, she wasn't sure what to do.

He heard the scuffle of feet and the creaking of wooden boards as they were removed from the frame just to his left and it drew his gaze. Avis watched the women with his eyebrows knitted together as she muttered away to herself before a low breath was exhaled from his nose in amusement. It seemed that she had not been here for quite some time: that, or the fact that her dear friend could very well be dead was getting to her, causing her to forget things she would normally have no trouble in remembering. He wouldn't say anything. It would not help the situation. She disappeared through the fence and he spotted her from his vantage point as she gazed around. Barrels, that was all he saw.

Jumping down, Fabian had to duck to get through the termite-eaten frame but he joined Rune on the other side as she moved to the door. Turning his back on her, the older man took it upon himself to look around for danger as she picked the lock. He only just heard the click as it was successfully picked but the slight brush on his back was what caused him to turn around. The stench of rotting flesh immediately flooded his nose and he coughed, a foul look taking over his features. But it was a dead guard, young and scarred with acne. Obviously not an old man, and obviously not the old man they were looking for. "In we go, then." He said, and walked past the body as if he was strolling into his own rooms. Here, with the door wide open, there was more light for them to see by and Avis spotted an unused candle on the floor. Stooping, he picked it up and placed it in a candle holder. A flash of fire and a match set it burning before being shaken out. Fabian looked back and extended a hand. "You coming in?"

Rune nodded, ''Coming.'' she answered with a faint smile and took the offered hand, stepping over the dead man. Now that she was sure the old man was not here and alive, she was feeling much better and her mind was now able to focus on their mission. They walked through the deserted house with the small light of the flickering candle, which revealed an even bigger mess, and the stains of blood still splattered over the floor. They finally came to the old staircase which led upstairs, where the old man's bedroom and guest rooms were. The stairs creaked under their weight, making the woman think the two of them could fall through them at any moment. Once they passed the stairs safely, she took the lead again and walked into what seemed to be the main bedroom, as she remembered it was. The candle's light revealed a small paper on the bed, her name written on it hastily. A look of surprise was shown on her face and the woman picked it up, turning and examining it in case something else was written there. She settled her olive gaze on the unruly words and started reading.

Rune, I am sorry I haven't been able to contact you and that I left such a mess behind.
They've finally found me. Can you believe it? After so long, they have discovered my
hiding place and now I have to flee from my own people, my own friends because they
have orders to kill me. But, I do not feel any regret. I helped you the best I could, as I
promised your father a long time ago. Do not worry about me, I am well and I promise
you that I will keep it that way. And one more thing - anything that you might find useful
in the future is in the desk's second drawer on the left side. Good luck. With love, Frey.

A smile lit up on her face as she read the message, glancing at the outlines of the lonely desk in the corner of the dark room. Even though this was nothing compared to a hug or even simply being able to talk to the man in person, it still meant a lot to her and it finally put her mind at peace. Rune looked at Fabian, "We should check the drawer, that's what he wrote here... let's hope it's something we could use." she said lightly, taking a few steps forward, enough to be standing in front of the desk. "Second drawer on the left... there." the woman muttered to herself and opened the small drawer, revealing some neatly stacked papers, a purse of coins and a golden necklace with a heart shaped pendant. The papers surely held important information and the coins themselves were help enough, but the necklace caught her attention. It seemed... familiar, like she has seen it somewhere... her mother. This belonged to her mother. But... why was it here? Where did he get that and why didn't he give it to her sooner? A flash of anger slashed through her mind, Rune wanted to know everything about it and she couldn't get the answers. She slammed the drawer shut, "Let's go." she said and started moving.

The thief watched in silence as his companion read through the note left for her and then made her way over to the drawer mentioned. There was a look of happiness on her features but in a flash they turned to anger and the drawer was slammed shut with such a force it caused the entire structure to wobble on it's legs. "Hey now, calm down," he warned, moving closer and resting his fingers around her upper arm, "there's no need for that. He's left you something and it's only right that you take it. Otherwise, someone could steal these and use them." Look at him, an experienced thief talking about someone stealing something important to his fellow guild member. Reaching out, Avis leaned around Rune - his other hand still on her arm - and put the candle down and pulled open the door and flicked through the papers with mild curiosity before placing them in a pocket, along with the money. Lastly, he picked up the necklace and held it to the light of the candle. It was a beautiful thing, and expensive too. It was made entirely made out of gold, from the delicate chain to the heart-shaped pendant itself. He didn't open it, however: it would be unnecessarily rude and he was not that sort of man, thief he may be. They would be fools to leave such an exquisite piece of jewellery behind. "Is this important to you?" He asked in little more than a whisper, for with his position behind her his mouth was next to her ear.

A few steps and the woman would be outside of the room, ready to leave and forget about this when she felt a grip around her arm and heard Avis's words, but they hardly had any effect on her. Though she didn't say anything, Rune's face clearly showed her anger and frustration. She stood there, not feeling like moving away from him or even removing his hand, but his whisper managed to turn her anger into bitterness. ''Important? It belonged to my mother, and I didn't expect to find it here since I was sure it was around her neck when I watched her burn with the rest of the crowd that sentenced her to death.'' she let out coldly, glancing at the wretched thing that was making her eyes teary. She noticed Avis had no intentions of opening it, but if he did, he'd notice the words ''For my beloved wife Katarina. Yours forever, Raphael'' engraved on one of the inner sides of the heart. Her gaze was still on the necklace and a single tear rolled down her rosy cheek before she could notice, but she didn't bother to do anything about it. The memories it brought, her heart ached as she remembered the times when she had a normal and happy family, the times when she hardly knew life could be so cruel. She had it all, and she lost it with only one false rumor, one false accusation and her family fell apart. Lady Luck was never on her side and sadly, she knew it all too well.

"So it is important to you." He mused, cocking his eyebrows in slight amusement even though she was clearly angry at the sight of the pendant. To think that this necklace was once her mother's and she was sure it had been burnt along with her was something he had not expected but either way Rune still held some value to this item: she would only be angry, this angry, if that was the case. Unclasping his hand slowly from her upper arm, he moved from behind her and moved to pocket the locket. "Although, if you don't want it, I'd be happy to sell it. We could always do with some more money for the guild." A purposeful goad, one designed to force his female companion to admit that she wanted it, that she wanted to take it home with her, to remember her mother by. Avis prepared himself for the backlash, for her anger to take it's full course and for her to launch herself at his throat.

''Of course it is, but I'm not sure I want it.'' she squeezed through her teeth, crossing her arms as she removed her gaze from the godforsaken thing, but she did not expect to hear such audacity from the man. Rune's eyes widened in anger and her hand flew towards the man's face the moment she heard his words, a moment later leaving a red mark on his cheek, ''Say that again and I swear to god, I will cut you open.'' she hissed at him angrily and forcefully retrieved the pendant from his hand. ''Selling it''. No way she was going to let him do that. The woman stuffed the necklace into her pocket and took the candle, noticing it was half the size it was when they found it. Have they been here that long? It seemed a bit strange to her, but when the fun is good, time flies, no? Sarcasm intended. Anyways, she walked downstairs, hoping that the man was following the small source of light, but she still couldn't believe he could even think to- wait a minute. He did it to help her. ''Have I ever told you I hate you?'' she asked the man, a smirk appearing on her face. Even though the anger hasn't faded away completely, Avis's presence helped her calm down. And she was grateful for that. Truly, she has not made the wrong decision when she came to him for help.

She took the bait like a fish took the worm on the end of a hook and her palm slammed into his cheek with a force he did not believe such a young woman could possess. Unfortunately for him, the strike also hit the borders of his earlier-received bruise from his night of pilfering and the impact caused a flare of manageable pain to erupt on the side of his face. But Fabian remained silent as she snarled at him like some feral cat, eyes wild with rage. He remained silent as she snatched the pendant from his grasp, blunt nails scraping along the calloused flesh of his fingers. He remained silent as she plucked the half-burnt candle from where he had placed it on the table and he remained silent as she lead the way from the room, a waving silhouette crackling with fury. Only once she was over the threshold did he choose to follow her, rubbing his jawline with a small frown.

Rune guessed his plot as they neared the stairs. Drawing level with her, Avis allowed his own smirk to match her own as he touched the brim of his cavalier hat with the pads of his fingers, tipping the accessory in a salute. "No, you haven't. But feel free to remind me in the future."
