The forest deck was used for a divine spread, and the cards drawn were...

Image

Number of cards to draw: XIII - Black Shuck (13)
Technically only the number is relevant, but its meaning will be provided nonetheless:
Of the otherworldly beings that dwell in the woods, few are as fearsome as Black Shuck, for he is a portent of death.
Is your heart beating a little faster now? He is one of the spectral hounds who roam the earth, haunting the bleakest moors and the darkest forests. You may have heard him clawing and whining at your very door. Now he meets you among the gravestones, illuminated by lightning flashes. Don't worry, he won't harm you- Black Shuck comes not to take your life but as a memento mori, a reminder that death awaits you and life is not to be wasted. Look into his fiery eyes; let him know you understand his message. If you have the courage, extend a cautious hand and feel his cold breath. He knows your scent, and he will find you again. Sooner or later Black Shuck comes for us all.

XVIII - Moonlight [Reversed]
Who dares to go into the forest when the moon is full?
Who would follow the luminous paths to the gazing pool? The forest is a different place by moonlight. What is familiar by day becomes illusory when the moon is full. The sounds of the night are eerie, haunting, filling you with nameless longing. Moonbeams sift down through the branches, silvering the sylvan glade. Hares go mad in the moonlight. Wild with lunatic ecstasy, they dance and leap, then suddenly stand motionless, frozen, bewitched. They return to themselves when the dawn breaks-most of the time. It is said that those who sleep in the moonlight either go mad or become poets. The poet Byron wrote: "There is a dangerous silence in that hour/A stillness which leaves room for the full soul/To open all itself, without the power/Of calling wholly back its self-control." Perhaps our lives are but a dream, and we are all as mad as moon hares.
Even the most pragmatic cannot deny the magic of the night. When Moonlight shines upon your reading, take it as a sign to let intuition rule over logic for a time. Pay attention to your dreams, which may be full of portents. Spend time outside in the dark with no intention other than to be open to the mystery.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Secrecy and mystery. The dream world. Intuition. Something is hidden from view.
A CLOSER LOOK: How many hares do you see in this card?

Keeper of Spells
The Keeper of Spells blasts through obstacles with an elf-wizard enchantment that is transformational and activating. His familiar is a firedrake, which embodies the blazing force of his passionate will. He summons it forth from his own center; the Keeper of Spells has no need for external tools of magic. Seek him out when you are ready to change your world.
If this card doesn't represent a particular person, it can mean a time of powerful advancement for an endeavor or a movement. Embolden others in creative and positive ways.
CHARACTER TRAITS: Confident. Charismatic. Passionate. A natural leader. Motivates by example and exuberance. Virile. Dramatic.
SHADOW TRAITS: Hot-tempered. Vain. Egocentric. Arrogant. Doesn't like to share his toys. Ignores the rules. Autocratic.

Six of Challenges
Whew! That was a near escape, far too close for comfort. Dwarves don't usually climb trees if they can help it, but this dwarf scaled the ash tree as nimbly as a squirrel when the wolves started chasing her. There's no need for her to plan what to do next-since she can't fight a pack of wolves, she needs to just wait them out. When they have lost interest in her, she can hurry home to a well-earned supper.
When you are pursued by slavering wolves, the wisest course is to get out of their reach as quickly as possible. This card suggests that you should consider such a strategic retreat-perhaps an actual retreat away from home or work for a time. Give yourself a respite from strife. Rest, recover, and plan your next step.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Retreat. Deliverance from a dangerous situation. Waiting for danger to pass. A chance to regroup.
A CLOSER LOOK: Wolves in the mundane world aren't menacing, but these are old-world storybook wolves, notoriously big and bad, and they will eat you up.

Seven of Boons
In the enchanted forest, there is always a door when you need one...eventually. The forest decides when your need is great enough to warrant a portal, and then sometimes it gives you more than one. The next stage of your journey is determined by the door you choose, so take your time. Don't rush through the first door that appears before you. Remember, this is a magical place, and things are not always as they seem. Sit down and observe the scene for a while to judge its permanence. You don't want to step through a door into nothingness.
This card is about patience as much as it's about choice. As you may have noticed, the suit of Boons doesn't go in much for speed or impetuosity. It's about practical responses to practical problems, even in the realm of enchantment. If you don't know what to do yet, don't do anything. Simple as that. Remember, once you choose a door, all the other doors disappear.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Patience. Timeliness. Waiting for obvious directions. Recognizing the best option.
A CLOSER LOOK: Each door bears a different symbol, placed there by magic. Which one calls to you?

XVII - Starlight [Reversed]
If you walk quietly through the forest on a clear and moonless night, you may hear singing high above, where the tree-tops open to the vastness of the sky. There are groves of beech
and linden that are much beloved by the woodland elves, who call them elerrΓna, "crowned with stars." Close your eyes and listen to their ethereal voices: they sing of ages past, with laments for the fallen and exaltations of the illustrious. They sing of the patterns of destiny they perceive from the vantage point of immortality. They sing of the stars themselves, whose light still reaches us long after their lives are extinguished. The elves sing of hope. Troubles and tyrants come and go, but the stars shine
ever on.
Starlight comes to reassure you that everything happens for a reason, even if you can't perceive it now. Time and distance will bring the pattern to light. For now, breathe in the beauty of this out your song upon the evening air. moment and
pour
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Undying hope. Immortality. Spiritual connection to the cosmos. Destiny. Cosmic connection. Eternal mysteries.
A CLOSER LOOK: Beech and linden trees are calming, peaceful, and strong. The beech is known as the queen of trees.

Two of Challenges
Traveling through the forest, a young man suddenly comes upon a magic mirror blocking his path. The looking glass hangs in midair with no visible means of support and no way to remove it. The forest is thick with undergrowth here. He can't go forward, he can't go around, and he doesn't want to go back. So he chooses the obvious solution: he looks into the mirror. He sees himself exactly as he is-no mystical vision or otherworldly entity, just his own startled, wide-eyed self.
You may have gotten into a situation from which there is no obvious positive movement forward. This card signifies a pause for clarification-not about the situation but about your place in it. You can't go any farther on this path until you take a long look at yourself. Stop being in denial about your own faults and failings. Stop distracting yourself to avoid facing the truth. You will make better progress when you are clearer about your true
intentions.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Stalemate. Inability to compromise. A pause for contemplation.
A CLOSER LOOK: Mirrors have a long history in the world of enchantments. While you may on occasion see other beings in the mirror, remember that it is also a magical power to truly see yourself.

Child of Boons [Reversed]
The lost and hungry Child of Boons can't believe his luck when he comes upon a house made of gingerbread. There doesn't seem to be anyone around to forbid him, but still, he hesitates before breaking off a piece. He tries to remember what he's been taught about the proper procedure for magic cottages. The practical thing would seem to be to stay alive while await- ing rescue. So...does that mean eat? Or not eat?
If this card does not represent a particular person, it can mean a time of study, an impetuous investment, or a sign that it is time to pay more attention to material security and prosperity.
CHARACTER TRAITS: Considerate. Cautious. Obedient and well-mannered. Quiet. Bashful. Wants to help but must be supervised.
SHADOW TRAITS: Inexperience in earthly practicalities. Can't manage money. Expects others to care for him. Doesn't always tell the truth.

Seven of Spells [Reversed]
Our friend the young wyvern is growing fast. No longer a hatchling, he is able to go out at night by himself, and tonight he's been ambushed by a mob of torch-wielding gnomes. Gnomes are earth elementals, which means they can get a bit stuck in their waysβ€”and in their attitudes. Things that are unfamiliar or different seem threatening to them. The gnomes want to upset the wyvern and frighten it into leaving "their" forest. The wyvern is in a position of advantage above the gnomes, but he can't easily flee. He isn't breathing fire at the moment, but he could and he might. The situation does not bode well.
The gnomes represent lesser forces that may be rallied against you. Don't stoop to their level, and do not return fire. There's a very good chance that their ideas are misinformed. Wait for tempers to cool, then find common ground and work toward peace.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Holding your own under attack. Trivial problems add up. Misunderstandings. Defensiveness.
A CLOSER LOOK: As you can see, there is not much diversity among the gnomes, which is one reason they are suspicious of non-gnomes.

Five of Spells
A few students from the woodland wizarding school have come out to work on their transformation spells, and toady hilarity ensues. Though to us as onlookers the scene is humorous, these toad-boys are deadly serious about their mock battle. They are learning their craft, exercising their powers, and refining their skills through comradely competition. Each wants to be the best, and that spurs the others on to greater glory. These young wizards do know what they are doing, in terms of the spell itself, but magic is still an effort at this stage. With practice they will soon move on to more challenging sorcery.
Makers of magic know they can reach new levels of achievement with a little healthy competition. The trick is to keep it light and friendly, not devolve into a fight, which can be especially dangerous when wizardry is involved. Find ways to engage with your fellow wizards through playfulness and encouragement.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Friendly competition. Striving for excellence. Healthy rivalry. Learning from mistakes.
A CLOSER LOOK: The wizard professors make the students work out their magical errors on their own, which means some young half-toads may have trouble holding their forks at dinner.

Eight of Spells
A parliament of owls, incoming! Zooming through the forest with sureness of purpose, they carry messages of magical portent. Some travel at the bidding of the Enchanter himself, but anyone can ask an owl to carry a message; the owl will decide if it wants to or not. If you have been sent an owl before and didn't heed its message, you may be left to your own devices from then on. Owls do not carry trivial missives-crows are happy to do that-so when you see an owl headed your way, straighten up and prepare to receive it with respect.
The appearance of the owls in a reading signifies news is on the way. It also means that energy is increasing for any endeavor to which you apply your full will and intention. Things are speeding up and moving toward a positive conclusion or reward. Watch the skies!
MEANING AT A GLANCE: News and incoming messages. Swiftness. Aiming toward a goal.
A CLOSER LOOK: This parliament has two tawny owls, one little owl, one short-eared owl, and two barn owls. The formal name for the short-eared owl is Asio flammeus, which is also how you summon an owl.

Three of Challenges [Reversed]
It is easy to get lost in the woods. It is also easy to get rid of something A desperately poor man has brought his little daughter and son far into the forest, intending to leave them to their fate. At home only slow starvation awaits them. Perhaps among the wild beasts, their end will be quicker. This is a terrible moment. It is the moment when a father abandons his children. The children are puzzled, but they trust him. They will wait here for his return.
You've probably heard a tale like this before. Alas, there have been many children abandoned in the enchanted forest. In the stories they frequently do quite well for themselves, but the brutal betrayal is not easily overcome. This card signifies a hardening of emotions and fateful decisions made in a moment of weakness and fear. It is a warning to protect yourself, and it also cautions against hurting others. There are many kinds of betrayal and many ways to break your own heart.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Betrayal. A heartless decision. An abuse of trust. A stupid and unnecessary drastic action. Everyone involved is hurt.
A CLOSER LOOK: Magical brambles rapidly grow across the path, springing from the anguished tears of the fleeing father.

0 - The White Hart [Reversed]
At the edge of the deep forest stands an invitation to enchantment. When you see a pure white deer, you are being called to follow it, and only the foolish would ignore such a beckoning. And yet, it takes trust to enter the forest, to explore the unknown and the uncharted. Mysteries await you, according to what your soul needs for its journey. There are surprises around every bend in the woodland path-and often there is no path at all. The White Hart opens a portal into the wild, and your own wild heart responds. Step forward through the swirling mist into the realm of apple and oak, ash and hawthorn, fir and willow, holly and hazel. There may be companions along the way and adversaries too. The first step into the forest must be taken on your own.
The traditional name for this mysterious card that is numbered zero is the Fool, and it symbolizes the start of a new adventure that is undertaken with a pure and innocent heart. The pun here is intended: follow your hart/heart.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: A new beginning. Accepting the invitation. Going forward with trust. The journey begins. Follow your instincts.
A CLOSER LOOK: The trees that are named in the description are shown in the card, clockwise from the left. Each has a magical meaning: apple/ the otherworld, oak/endurance, ash/action, hawthorn/protection, fir/perspective, willow/ intuition, holly/challenge, and hazel/wisdom.

Six of Visions
All in the golden afternoon, a child comes to her spot by the river, bringing her book and her imagination.
She is absorbed, enchanted, blissfully lost in her beloved stories. She doesn't even notice the forest creatures and magical beings all around her, though it wouldn't surprise her to see they are real, for she believes in them fervently. These hours are the foundation of her lifetime's ideas about happiness. As long as she can find her way into the forest-or lose herself in a bookβ€”she will always be the child with dreaming eyes of wonder.
When we grow up, we're expected to put away childish things and settle down to take life seriously. But we are never too old to live an enchanted life. This card is a reminder that the child you once were is still part of you. What was magic then is still magic today; all you have to do is open your mind to it. Your old friends from books and your imagination are close at hand, waiting for you to come for a picnic by the river.
MEANING AT A GLANCE: Memories of childhood. Nostalgia. The way you were before cynicism or bitterness touched you.
A CLOSER LOOK: Do you see the dragonfly?
