I guess I should share some of the research I've already done on these things with you before
you go taking one home. Don't want any nasty surprises, right? Heh... Um, anyway, my research
is still ongoing, obviously, and it's a pretty slow process when you're working by yourself. But I've
set up this library where I'll document my findings. You may...peruse it as you like. Just don't come
around after 9 pm, alright? I lock the doors and turn on the electric fence after 9 pm.

I've managed to sequence parts of these guys' genome, and I've created a sort of gene bank where you can look at all the genes that have been discovered. I'm sure I'll find more later. I mean, it's not like I'm gonna be able to close that stupid portal any time soon...Er, did I say portal? I didn't say portal. There's no portal. Stop asking.

Final Notes: Figuring out what these things eat was a challenge. I'll admit, I let some of my own biases get in the way in the beginning, and I assumed they might eat something strange or disturbing like...human meat, or maybe the souls of orphans. I mean, they did eat those, but they didn't seem particularly enthusiastic about it. You may notice towards the end of my experiments, the notes are a bit...sparse. I'll admit I started to give up, and I just let them loose in my kitchen. Agnes seems to like sugar, no matter what it's in, but she seemed particularly enthusiastic about Heinz tomato ketchup. Jonathan just ate a whole bag of dried pinto beans. I was afraid he wouldn't eat any other kind of bean, but he devours all kinds of uncooked beans happily. I will have to repeat these experiments with the other creatures that have come through. I hypothesize that their food preferences are similarly eclectic.

Physiology

Senses
After observing the "animals'" behavior, running scans, and conducting short experiments involving the critters' responses to different images and wavelengths of light, I have concluded that their multiple eyes are not all created equal. They may see the world somewhat like spiders in the sense that some eyes can track only movement or light and dark, while others see clearer color pictures. However, I believe their eyesight may be more sophisticated than that. I believe they may be able to see more colors than humans can, and they may even be able to see in infrared. I'm not sure how the glowing markings some of them sport might factor into the way they see the world and interact with each other yet, but it's certainly worth looking into in the future.

I have yet to test their sense of smell, but it would appear their hearing is excellent. This is unfortunate, as it is very difficult to sneak up on them when trying to get them back into their holding area. However, they are not very fast, especially when trying to find purchase on tile or linoleum with their little chicken feet, so that kind of makes up for it.

Nesting

Now that the "animals" have had time to settle in and acclimate to their surroundings, we have observed some interesting behaviors regarding how they interact with their home environment. Most notably, we have observed what appears to be nesting behavior.

The critters are very particular about their nests, and they will build them from nearly any material. However, they're very particular about which material they choose. When they find a place they like, they'll pick one or two very specific items as building materials and refuse to use anything else. For example, Agnes has made a nest out of stray gloves and socks (some of which do not appear to be Third's, which does beg the question: where is she getting them? Further research is required on that.) Jonathan likes to hide in the lowest drawer of one of the filing cabinets and seems to enjoy burrowing in loose paper. I watched Gertrude cram herself into a 5000 ml Erlenmeyer flask as if she didn't have any bones. It was...disturbing. But also very cute. They seem to like nesting on the ground as they're not (usually) very adept climbers, and they especially like dark, cramped places such as under desks and shelves or in cupboards. Or in flasks, as it were.

The critters do not appreciate their nests being disturbed. Attempts to move or deconstruct them are usually met with biting. A lot of biting.

So now that we've got all that silly legal business taken care of, here's all the critters I have. Metal cages don't really, uh...hold them. They gnaw right through the darn things. I don't think they like being trapped. So they're all living in my lab. Go on in and have a look around. I cleared out all the dangerous chemicals, but I do have to warn you, the critters, they uh...Well there's a lot of lab benches and cabinets in there, and they do like to hide...

So you know how I've been calling these guys "animals"? Well, uh...the quotation marks are there for a reason. These guys don't reproduce like any animals I've ever seen before. I won't get into the details, but, uh, you know how in Steven Universe the gems can fuse together to make a new gem? Imagine that. But instead of there being two gems when they unfuse, there's now three, and the third one looks like the big one.....Yes I know what Steven Universe is, shut up.

Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out how it works (my current theory is that these things are just very large bacteria) so if you want to stick two of them in a room together and see what happens, be my guest. Just give them at least 14 days before you do it again. It takes a little bit for them to get all their eyes and stuff back in the right places. And on the right bodies.

Each breeding costs Grant Money, which you can obtain through research or by donating CS pets. See the Grant Money post for more information.

If you think you'll eventually want to breed two critters, but don't want to do it right now, you can buy a fusion dance DVD from the Stock Room.

Anyone can breed with the critters in the open kennel, so long as they aren't on cooldown.

Two offspring will result, one going to each of the parents' owners. The person who paid for the breeding gets first pick in all cases. Unwanted or unclaimed offspring will go to the pound.

Putting your critter in the kennel does not cost anything.
