She danced upon the water lit by the moons pale light, the water spirits who cared for the moon pool danced with the white doe singing their watery melody understandable only by a child of water. The doe herself was a child of water a very important one to be specific, she had no name and was just referred to as Koi after the fish the water had designed her favorite child after

Uncommon

Image

---

The snow fell and crystalized on the ground. The once green grass was now covered, trying to unearth for a breath. The dainty figure blended in well, besides the uncommon colaration and markings that were stamped along her back. She raised her neck, looking behind her bod to see her unwelcoming herd grazing peacefully. The Natural dusty brown deer seeking the grass that needed a breath while the tiny natural fawns leapt in the snowwy downing. Sighing, the young female sauntered quietly away from her herd-no-more, leaving everything but her name, Uncommon. Uncommon was a name that fit like the right shoe turned inside out. It was soemthing sour to be called. No one really understood it, no one knew why she was dappled black and red. She was a mutant. A sight to see. But inside the distorted deer rested a sould shivering in the unwanted carcass of it's host. Crying out into the depths of a weird body. Uncommon was what she was, but no one even cared to ask if her heart was normal.

"Comes here every so often, around six or so." The bartender wiped out the glass, checking his work to make doubly sure there was nothing left on the sides before he set it up with the others to be used. As glass clinked against glass, the young man he was talking to turned just so. His eyes were making no secret of his interests; the rest of the room might as well have been an empty void compared to the table by the fireplace. "Always leaves around ten."

He didn't even need to say it. The young man in front of him already knew both facts, and the way the hope in his eyes faded made it clear that he'd wanted the bartender to know more. With some effort, he turned his eyes away as the table burst into laughter, gazing instead into his drink as if the bottom of his glass had all the answers he were seeking.

"Hmm…" A knowing hum accented the soft music already coming from the speakers above as the bartender grabbed another glass, settling elbows on the counter and glancing toward the table. As always, the woman in red was the object of fascination and admiration, a set of worn playing cards in her hand as she dealt with a smile. A long time ago, someone had given her a white jacket, and it hung against the back of her chair, a sharp contrast to pale skin and black hair. "Lookin' at someone from afar never got a man anything but dreams."

"Bah." His eyes were trailing again, watching slender fingers deal out cards with all the precision of a woman that knew everything about the game, inside and out.

"I hear her name is Ace."

The bartender's chuckled voice barely reached the man as, drink vacated, he found himself walking toward that fireplace, that table, and that woman, with a single intent in mind. Even if every thought of what he was doing made his palms sweat and his heart race.

"Can you make room for another player?"

~~~
She was a vision in the night. The snow was cold, and made their breath puff out in small clouds as the moon above gave the red sheen of the night it's own special glow. But that wasn't stopping either of them from enjoying every moment. Laughter rang out as the woman twisted with her arms held out for balance, her head pointed toward the sky. "Oh, I know! I know sitting in that place every other night will never get me adventure!" But by her laugh, she didn't regret it.
He caught her before she hit the ice and fell, laughing right alongside her as they nearly slid down the hill. Only a timely catch of the lamppost stopped both of them, and with a grin, he looked into her eyes as she looked back at him. "Then why do you do it?"
"Why..?" A blink, and she suddenly realized herself. All too soon, she was no longer in his arms, and he could only gaze after her as she turned away. The street was almost an excuse to walk. With a tentative glance in both directions, her breath sighed out into the cold night air as she walked out onto the pavement. "Hmm… Because I… I love the game." He could see it, even if she tried to avoid looking at him as she thought. A small smile hovered on her lips, trying to spread but being held in check. "And the people."
Their eyes met for a moment he wished were longer. But now the smile on her lips couldn't be kept back. Again, her laugh broke the night as she moved her hair back and adjusted her coat around herself, as if trying to smooth over her own statement. "It's so different from my home. So warm, and… and less fear. Oh… no it's not what you think. Don't look at me that way…"
But he couldn't stop. Even if it was only one night he'd actually spoken to her, there was something in her, and him, that wanted to know more. It was why he reached out, and why she didn't flinch away when his hand took hers and squeezed. "You can tell me… if you want to."
But now her smile was rueful, and her eyes were far away as she looked at the moon again. "No…" It was hard to imagine a whispered word could hurt so much. "I can get home from here, Miles."
"But-"
"I'll be back." She nudged him, easing away afterwards. "Every other night. Play cards with me." Something fell into his hands, and with a quick glance, he saw the ace of hearts resting in his palm. "And don't follow me, Miles."
"I-…" But she'd already turned, and somehow, she was bounding away like a creature from legends, even though the cement was slick with ice. "Wait…"
~~~

He followed her anyway.

Over streets, through alleyways, past cats and behind houses, he followed her. And at long last, she slowed and came to a stop in the one place he thought she might not. Like giant sentinels of the night, trees frozen with ice and snow towered above them both, swaying and creaking in the chill wind and shedding clumps of white from their boughs. The ground was cold, colder than in the city, with snow drifts that made walking difficult. And the only indication that there was civilization just over the ridge was the sounds of cars muffled by distance.

Pale hands touched and old, withered tree like it was an old friend. She hadn't bothered looking behind her. Maybe she felt safe here, or maybe, at this point, safety didn't matter. Either way, Miles found himself leaning against the trunk of a tree with his puzzlement written all over his face. "Why..?" the word was for him and him alone, barely reaching his own ears as he watched her place her playing cards into the tree, and then her jacket, and then…

He grit his teeth and covered his eyes with a hand.

Moments later, though, curiosity became stronger than politeness. Fingers parted just as light began to glow against the snow, as red as Ace's dress had been. The figure of a woman was there, just for an instant, but then, a shift began. Legs thinned, arms lengthened and joints pulled into new positions. A head so human began to elongate, ears inching up and back as the entire creature finally fell forward and hit the snow with new… hooves.

As the light faded, there was no longer a woman.

"Oh my God."

She looked at him then, bright, pale eyes peering through the trees as large ears framed a slender face. And for that instant, the both of them were frozen, a doe looking as if headlights were bearing down, and a man that had just lost his sense of reality. He barely even noticed the snow soaking through his pants around his knees. But his eyes caught every flake of wayward powder as the doe turned, her multicolored coat flashing in the night, and sped away.

Even after she was gone, all he could do was stare, first at the place she'd been, and then at the card, still clutched in his hand.

Ace of Hearts.

{{*Beats head against wall* I told myself I'd never do it... buuuuut... Well, the first thing I thought when I saw the new doe was... card suits. I know she's a koi XD but you know.

Then this little story burst into my head and there you go *waves hand around* Sorry about that, it has to be waaaay too long. Either way, I hope people enjoy reading it, even if just for that! XD Was fun to write.}}

An artist, thats what I am. My name is Splatter. Here is the story of me.

The new doe was to be shiped that day, but she never arived. The armored car transporting the new discovery was robbed, all the gaurds slayed. Oddly, they had no blood pooling around them, yet, they had obviously been stabbed. The doe was forgotten in the midst of the deaths, oh how stupid that was of them.

"Well, well, well, another one. What a surprize. Didn't want to miss out on the new craze, 'eh?" The yellow-toothed, grubby, lurching old man. The young lady didn't seem to trust him, but she handed over the wad of green bills. The man cackled and handed over a splattered painting, I made it. For a deer, I don't mean to be boastful, but it's pretty dang good. I sighed, he never cared for my needs, just his.

Picking up my hoof, I stood over in my cleaning trough, washing the black and red paint of my hooves. They were red too, but I didn't want the paint clogging up my feet. I stepped on my paint barrels, after drying my feet, and began to walk around on my canvas, immitating my pattern. Every day, in and out, the same thing.

Save for Sundays.

The man went to church and let me out. That was his 'good day'. He washed, shaved and brushed his teeth before putting on his nice clothes. Then he'd go away, letting me sleep in. Oh yes, I found a way to get free, but the last time I ran, he whipped me harshly, and I never tried again.

I finished and the man pushed me away, hanging my picture on the hook to dry. He than began to yell, selling away my paintings. Yes, I'm an artist. It's who I am it's in my blood. Seeing the humans admiring my work, impressed by me, is the best feeling ever, but now I know I must leave. For good. They can't live here.

I snuck out lat night, while the man was sleeping. I slipped through the crack in my pen, the only escape route, and ran. I ran and ran and ran and ran. I came to a forest, got a drink in a small pond, and that's where I am now. I begin to walk again, not as hurried as before.

Now I'm a good five miles from home, and completely lost. Just keep going, Splatter. I tell myself. Just keep going. I do. But, I must stop. I choose to settle under a large willow tree alongsides a small stream. Fish with my pattern flit around through the clear, cool water. "Koi." The word flys to my lips before I can stop it, and I instantly regret it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They are beautiful. The small red-and-white doe, and her brother, the large black-and-red buck. They are mine, mine forever. Koi and Canvas, the buck is Canvas and my little doe is Koi. I knew it'd be better for them here, but I have to leave them. As I walk into the water, I catch a glimpse of them before I am swallowed into the river, shrinking and twisting.
My body lands into the stream with a small splash, the rest of me disapating into water and being shimmied away. I swim over to my children, knowing now what I truly am. A koi fish. We all are, after we have offspring. If they never see me again, drink the water I swim in, or drink my body, they will remain deer. That is how I want it to be for them. They begin to run, as I had told them this before I had to leave. My last glimpse of them is her, her left foot disapearing over a log. I look away, feeling shriveled up, and go join my fellow Deer-Koi.
Why me? Koi thought. Everything I love has just collapsed. My mother drowned in Lake Sorea, My father became a bears brekfast, and my best friend was just caught by hunters! The beautiful deer lay down, solemly. "Mother, Father, Nila, why have you left me?" Koi blurted out. A shimmering drop slid gently off her face and into Lake Sorea. But, where the tear had rippled, her mothers face appeared in the water, glowing bright. "My dearest daughter, how you've grown! So beautiful. Yet, beauty comes with a curse. But you alone can bring a shining flame to the darkest of trageties." Her mothers voice echoed on the last sentence. "Wait, don't go!" Koi almost screeched as her mothers face began disappearing. When the face of her mother was completely gone, Koi's face grew sour with grief. Wait, was that last thing a prophecy? Maybe it could end my curse! Koi thought, her face brightening slightly. Later that night, she settled in her usual nest, in an old cave. In her dreams her Father appeared. "Oh my beautiful Koi, your mother told me about your conversation earlier. Have you figured out the prophecy yet?" Her father asked. "I believe so. I think.....somehow.....I have to end my curse, but how?" Koi asked. "Ahhhh, theres my daughter, always looking for the end, never taking time to enjoy the journey. Just like your mother." "Well, so far, the journey has only given me sorrow." Koi shot back. Her father rolled his eyes. "Have you ever wondered about that mark on the bottom of your hoof?" Her father questioned. Koi stepped in the sand and the weird hoofprint was left behind. On the right side of the hoof was a gem looking thing, with lines twisting here and there around it. "Y-Yes." Koi answered. "Its a key. Insert it into the right slot and your curse will be ended." "What slot? Where?" Somewhere far, far away." Her father muttered as he began fading into the background. Koi closed her eyes, and when she opened them, she was back in her cave. She felt a tug, as if someone was trying to lead her. For hours, days, weeks even! Koi followed the tugging only stopping for food and to dispose of the food. Finally, the tugging became unbearably strong. Just over that cliff! Koi thought. But it was not as easy as that, Koi looked down and the memories rushed back to her. Training. Her father was trying to teach her how to jump, as her moher watched. Koi was just a fawn then. She kept trying to jump over the river, but every time she fell in. Then, Koi tried a new approach. She picked the bounciest mushrooms she coul find and carried them one by one to the riverbank. Koi stood about three feet away, and then charged the pile, and when she leapt on it, the massive bouncy pile propelled her across the river and she was soon standing at her mothers side, on the opposite bank. But this was different. This canyon was four times as wide as the river, and twenty times deeper. This time, there were no mushrooms in sight. Koi backed up, about ten feet from the edge. She charged, and pushed off the edge with all her strength. But then, she felt herself begin to drop. Dread spread across her entire body as her stomack reached her throught. Then, she felt the tugging, pulling her to safety. Her eyes pushed shut, she felt her hooves touch solid ground, and when she opened her eyes, Koi was facing a huge version of her symbol. Carned into solid rock, It was about a thousand times bigger then hers. But, one just her size lay in front of it. Under it were the letters K-E-Y. Key. Koi placed her hoof in the slot, and suddenly, there was a geat rumbling noise. The huge hoofprint began to sink into the ground, and when it came back up, there was kindling. At first, Koi was confused, but then she remembered the prophecy; You alone can bring a shining flame to the darkest of trageties. This was her flame. She closed her eyes and thought about her family, her sorrow, eveerything she wants back.When she opened her eyes, her spots began to come off, leaving her with a blank pelt. As the spots touched the kindling, the fire sparked, illuminating the night. All around her, everything her curse had affected materialized around her. Her mother and father walked over to her proudly. "We knew you could do it." They said in unison. Nila was running happily around in circles. The light of dawn began to glow over the mountain, begining Koi's new, happier life.
First of all, I want to thank Concept for her individual reviews, she really inspired me. :D And I would like to thank PaperRainbow and Kennet for their help as well. It made me feel all special, lol X3. Now I shall try out for the new doe! :)
Username: LostGosling
Doe Name: Koi (formerly known as "Cali")
Story: Cali arched her neck gracefully as she stared down upon her pale reflection. She was a white doe, not much to look at really, but that tiny puddle always seemed to show the best side of her. She glanced around meekly, her gaze landing on all the colorful deer basking in the shade of an old elm tree. She gave a heavy sigh, gingerly stepping toward them. They turned to stare at her, their eyes mocking and cold as she froze in her tracks. She didn't have a place with them, among the beautiful deer, and she knew that. It never hurt to try though.
~~~~~~~~~~
Cali turned and ran, bounding away into the forest without a single look back. She could feel the tears coming, and she embraced them as they brimmed over. Why did everyone hate her? It's not like she wanted to be born different, and the others acted as if her coloring was designed specifically to put an end to all tastefulness. It was a cruel trick, a farce played upon her by the gods. She managed to stop running when she reached her most sacred sanctuary. The other deer didn't know of this place, and she wished to keep it that way.
~~~~~~~~~~
It was pure and beautiful, like it had never been tainted with the presence of spite or malice. The trees were always lush and green, even in the throws of the coldest of winters, and the tiny white flowers bloomed all year round. In the center of this magical place was a spring. Fresh, clean water constantly gushed from it's depths, and you could see all the way to the bottom. There were pretty, yellow water lilies all along it's banks, and dragonflies dabbled playfully at it's edges. Cali immediately felt herself calming as she gazed at it, a sense of child-like joy and belonging enveloping her completely. Though this place was far beyond the realm of norm, it was the creature that inhabited it that made it so special.
~~~~~~~~~~
As she approached the shimmering expanse of beauty, she saw a magnificent shape approaching her from it’s center. It was a Koi, but not of the normal kind by any means. It did a graceful roll on top of the water, showing off it's colorful scales as if each one had it's own unique moment to be adored. Cali watched the creature in awe, her breaths coming in small, excited gasps. It never came close enough for her to view it clearly, but it always moved with such a confidence, such serenity, that she never really imagined it any other way. It was a free spirit, undaunted by any other element on this earth.
~~~~~~~~~~
The doe carefully folded her legs to rest, a look of peacefulness in her eyes as she watched the Koi swim. This creature always seemed to bring her hope, no matter how bad things got, and watching it move was now the only one thing that could bring her happiness. Every time it surfaced, it created several delicate ripples that mingled in harmony with the ones created by the breeze. Cali lowered her head to the water, listening to it lap gently against the banks. She smiled timidly, lifting her head just enough to gaze at the Koi once more.
"Oh my wonderful friend,
You're kindness is not pretend,
I love your wordless adieu,
For your ways are tried and true,
Though as long as I shall live, be my life long past due,
I will wish that someday, I could be just like you."
And with those soft murmurs, one lone tear rolled down her cheek into the mystical waters below. As the tear dissipated into the depths of the spring, the most unexplainable of things began to take place.
~~~~~~~~~~
The water, once a deep swirling blue, was now glowing with all the light of a full moon. The doe stumbled back, afraid of what was happening around her. The gently lapping water was now spilling over onto land, wrapping around her frail legs and body with unstoppable strength. She gave a desperate cry as the elements pulled her, urged her into the welcoming calm of the spring. But as her body became completely submerged, she found that she wasn't afraid anymore. In fact, she felt at peace. All her troubles, her everyday worries and fears, they where drifting away just as her tear had. As she stared dazedly into the clouded world around her, a sight as familiar as breathing swam past. It was the koi.
~~~~~~~~~~
It circled Cali gracefully, every red and black scale highlighted by the white ones that rested near by. It drifted to a stop as it looked her in the eyes. To her great amazement, she heard the creature's voice through a form of telepathy.
"Hello my friend." the koi greeted her in a wise, soothing voice.
"How can I hear you? You haven't ever spoken before..." Cali thought pointedly, testing her theory.
"I can hear your thoughts as you can hear mine, but that's not why we're here today is it?" it replied, it's fins trailing out from their base like a curtain.
"They hate me, they've always hated me because of my pelt." the doe thought in frustration, her ears now flattened to her head.
"You must make them look past that! Your inner beauty is what matters, you just have to make them see it!" the koi replied, a since of urgency in it's tone.
"But how are they ever going to see my inner beauty if they shun me every time I walk by!?" Cali fretted, her lip trembling pitifully.
"I'm going to help you." the koi thought, a thin smile appearing on it's face. "I'm not your average koi you know."
"I gathered that." Cali replied, her eyes sparkling with interest. "What are you going to do?"
Suddenly, the water began swirling around her, like a whirl pool had opened underneath them.
"Hey! What's happening!?” she thought frantically, kicking her feet to try and stay level with the fish.
"Look, I don't have much time to explain, so listen carefully." The koi's eyes stayed locked on hers with a fierce determination. "Your life is going to change forever after this. Return to your herd, make them see what's most important in life. They will look up to you from that point on!"
~~~~~~~~~~
And with those final words the Koi turned into a wispy cloud of it's former colors. It swirled into the whirlpool with her, reaching toward her from all over in tiny vein-like tendrils. Cali writhed and jerked, trying desperately to rise for air, but it wasn't time yet. The magnificent entity was encompassing her fur in a tender, caring manner and she could feel it penetrating to her very soul as she started to go limp. The very last thing that the doe heard as she slipped into darkness was the whisper of one word.
"Remember."
~~~~~~~~~~
As Cali slowly came to, the light stung her eyes. Though she was lying on the dry bank, her fur was totally saturated and she could barely keep her balance as she attempted to stand. Her throat was raw, and a constant urge to cough gripped her as she staggered weakly toward the spring. Trembling all over, her eyes roved the surface of the water for any sign of the Koi. But it was gone, gone from the beautiful world that was once it's home. A sob escaped her as she fell forward, her eyes meeting with those of her reflection. As she stared at it in disbelief, it took her a moment to recognize the doe in the water as herself.
~~~~~~~~~~
Cali gasped in surprise, her mouth falling open just a fraction of an inch before she could catch herself. She pinched her eyes shut once, twice, three times just to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. But she wasn't. The doe that stood before those springs was beautiful, red and black spots scattered all down her snowy white back. Her forehead was painted a beautiful scarlet, as well as all four of her hooves. She couldn't believe it. She giggled with joy, frolicking in a circle just before she turned back to the place she had been reborn from. "Thank-you, I will not let your wonderful gift have been in vain." she whispered, her voice teeming with the essence of pure marvel. She turned, her eyes lingering one last time on the spring, and then took off back to the herd.
~~~~~~~~~~
When Cali finally came into view all the deer under the elm tree turned in unison to watch her entrance. The awe-inspired look on all their stunned faces was priceless as Cali trotted over to drink from her puddle. A feeling of sweet satisfaction had soaked into her subconscious, causing the corners of her mouth to turn up in a smirk. But that was all she allowed herself, for she was on a mission. One doe, obviously being forced by the rest of the group, tensely came over and began drinking next to her. The silence was heavy, almost comically so, but the two eventually lifted their heads to face each other. The doe looked back to her group helplessly, and then spoke in a nervous, shaky voice.
"H-Hi, w-what's you name?"
~~~~~~~~~~
They didn't even recognize her. Perfect. She could start all over, but she needed a name. Giving a skyward glance, a blissful look of appreciation in her eyes, she said the sentence that officially marked the beginning of her new life.
"Koi, my name is Koi."
“That’s pretty, I’m Terri. Those are my friends over there, want to meet them?” Terri motioned toward the herd of deer, who instantly shied away. Koi smiled at them, her heart thrumming with the joy of acceptance. “Sure!” Koi giggled, following the doe into the shade of the Elm.
~~~~~~~~~~
What Koi didn’t know was that she actually hadn’t changed at all. She was the same petite, white doe that she always was, but the magical koi had bestowed upon her the greatest gift of all…self-confidence. It was her very own hatred of being different that made her feel shunned by the others. The other deer always looked upon her with marvel when she passed them, but she was blinded by her own self-esteem. Now when she sees herself, she doesn’t see the doe that she had grown to be ashamed of, but the beautiful doe that she is on the inside. The truth is that the koi never intended to change Cali’s pelt, for it was perfect the way it was, but to change Cali’s heart.
Yes! I'm finally done! Wow that was long, lol. I hope you all enjoyed it! :D
