Story:
What was this place? Why was she here? The young Iop looked around at the kennel. The bars were tall and cold, the floor hard and uncomfortable. The food was dry and tasteless, and it was noisy. Very, very noisy. Aellai sighed and went to take a drink of water, only to scrunch her face up in disgust. It tasted metallic, bordering on sulfur. She groaned and laid down on the cold tile, closing her eyes and trying to remember where she had been before. What she had taken for granted and didn't have anymore.
Water. That's the first thing Aellai remembered: water. The little duck pond she had played in as she grew up. The feeling of joy as she chased her littermates in and out of the crystal waters, the thrill of stalking the unsuspecting ducks that came to rest and feed there. She thought of her last human companion, the little girl that had played with them so many days during the summer. She couldn't remember much of her parents, as they had been so distant from her life.
After the water she could remember a large orchard, the smell of apple picking in the fall. She smiled in her sleep. Her siblings and her would bound around and play tag as the two parents, their older son and young daughter spent hours each day reaping the trees' bounty. Night would then be greeted by a warm meal and a crackling fireplace, providing the pups a place to sleep.
In her dream world, winter then took it's hold. She remembered her first look at snow. It sparkled, white and crisp and beautiful. But it's solid appearance was decieving; the moment her brother stepped in it, her collapsed into the soft white fluff. It took days to get them to walk on it. She hadn't been the bravest with it, of that she was guilty, but once she got used to the strange, cold sensation she had found it enjoyable. That winter their legs had grown strong, and their bodies had lost most of the baby fat that they had once carried.
With spring brought the smell of apple blossoms and easter lilies, and sickness. Aellai remembered now, the sickness. She remembered seeing less and less of the little girl, until one by one her siblings began to be taken away. That spring she cried, cried out in loneliness and fear. The parents wouldn't let her see the little girl, and her siblings had gone away, probably forever. One night the Iop was woken from an unrestful sleep by the sound of sirens and flashing lights. She grew alarmed as strange men came rushing into the house, and she watched as they took the little girl away. The female parent was crying hysterically, the male parent desperately trying to comfort the mother. The son had long since gone away to college. Aellai shrunk back into a corner, fearful of what was going on. The parents left soon afterwards, speeding off in their own car and leaving the young Iop to fend for herself for the night. The next morning the parents returned looking lifeless. The father picked Aellai up and held her, carrying her back out to the car. As they drove, she kept hearing two words that still stuck in the back of her mind. "She's gone."
Aellai opened her eyes again, realizing the kennel room had become noisy again. She stood to see a tall woman come walking down the aisle, looking in each individual kennel. She was fit with long brown hair, a kind face and striking blue eyes. She greeted each animal with a cheerful, melodical voice. Then the woman saw Aellai; she stopped and crouched. "Hi there," she crooned, petting the Iop through the kennel bars. "You're very pretty. How would you like to come home with me, hm?"
