She tried to keep her eyes fixed on the flames in front of her, but as her thoughts wandered, so did her gaze. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t bring herself to look away from him.

Just outside the cave, the night was alive in a bustling chorus. The warm evening air raced through the valley, rustling the leaves on the trees. Crickets and cicadas sang from within the shelter of tall grasses. Frogs crooned their deep bass tune along the riverbed as the water beat rhythmically onto the shore.

But in here, the silence was deafening. It hung thick and heavy in the air, drowning out any sign of the outside world. The tension of everything left unsaid was palpable, growing with every passing moment. Neither one of them wanted to be the first to break the silence. It was suffocating.

She wracked her brain, replaying the events over and over in her mind, desperately trying to think of something, anything she could’ve done differently to protect him.

If only I’d had been quicker…

I shouldn’t have let my guard down…

It should’ve been me…

The two of them were invincible. Renowned for their military prowess on the battlefield and years of service to the Kingdom. They were recognized with highest honors amongst the court and country. They radiated strength and power, a symbol of infallible hope for their nation.

And now? Now here he sat. She’d never seen him look so small. So vulnerable. His fur was disheveled, matted was matted with dirt and blood. The tips of his once brilliant and dazzling ears now were dull, shooting small, pitiful sparks. And his eyes… Oh gods, his eyes...

As if reading her mind, his voice cuts sharply through the cave. “I don’t want your pity.”

A pang of guilt shot through her. Was she really that obvious?

“I—”

She stops suddenly. It’s not like she can say anything to fix this, to undo the hurt they caused, to fully restore his sight. She didn’t know what to say, or what came next.

“Let me look,” she murmurs, gently pressing her paw to his cheek. He bristles momentarily at her touch, unable to meet her gaze. Even as he averts his gaze, she can see it all. A heavy knot forms in her stomach. The hurt, the fear, the grief. She could hardly recognize him.

She kept her jaw set, eyebrows furrowed together in a fruitless attempt as to not betray any emotion.

“Please… Look at me.”

His breath hitches, his eyes flicking up momentarily to the emblem on her armor, but no further.

Without warning, he pulls away and turns his back away her desperate stare.

“It’s a long trek back to The Kingdom. We should go to bed.”

She stands there stunned. She lingers momentarily, frozen in place.

“Okay.”

Okay.
