"get ready for the meeting, you have to look professional. be ready by 2:00."

"sorry, mom." she left the room, shutting the door behind her. her footsteps echoed in the upstairs hallway as she walked away. i got up, grumbling and getting my suit out. it was bland and monochromatic- basically my worst nightmare, but it's not like i had the power to do anything about it. just you wait mom, when i'm CEO, i'll make color an ordinary in this household.

shattered glass. pale liquid running between it, pooling into the depressions in the floor. reminiscent of the stones and babbling brook enacting in one (1) fool’s head, a static scene that played as the empty minded equivalent to elevator music. he was processing.

“oh!” realization. “oh, i’m, i’m so sorry— let me get you a towel,” he danced around shards, “and a broom! i’ll be right back, im sorry!”

in retrospect, the boisterous laugh from the beer stained patron was. unsurprising. it startled alec anyway, because alec had a meatloaf brain and in sixteen years it still hadn’t processed that the members of this bar — or guild rather — weren’t just a bunch of loud, fist bearing, spell wielding customers. these were his family.

and, if he were to do something like accidentally pour a drink all over someone, it would be laughed off because, what a bit of fun this is! and look how far you got before spilling!

they babied him, sure, but honestly alec’s a clumsy kid who by no right should be working as a waiter. but he got the job because we aren’t housing you for free! it was just a way to keep him busy, really. they were losing more than they gained by having him work.

but that was ok, because they were family, and they loved the kid. as goofy as he may be. as often as he makes unintelligible jokes. as much trouble as he causes when he tells a newcomer off because they aren’t very kind. (nobody tells him that’s just how people are outside of the guild.)

someone dropped him off here as a kid. lord knows why. guilds were obnoxious places full of dangerous people. they were heroic sometimes, perhaps, taking quests and bounties. hunting outlaws, defeating evil. catching rats. maybe his parents had hoped for a hero.

so the guild took him in. raised him as their own. no big deal.

except that a group of thirty something people and hundreds of passersby was a chaotic sort of family to grow up in. lots of aunts, uncles, cousins. like uncle tobias, who taught him the basics of sword fighting. or aunt elena, who tried to explain alchemy through the similarities in brewery.

or cousin acacia, who listened to alec ramble about his feather collection, which these days seemed to be a feather-beetle-coin-trinket collection. an accumulation of anything he liked.

the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. he learned the full phrase early on. told to remember it if he ever got picked on— and he did, sometimes. but he didn’t mind.

family is family, no matter the form it comes in.

and being taken in a friendly head hold, hair messed up, this over getting yelled at over a broken mug and then some— yea. this was his family. and he laughed as they did: loudly, to hide all the cheesy love stuff they felt underneath. family at its finest.

Family is a strange thing... you know what they say. Blood is thicker than water. Right?
Well, not if you don’t know the whole saying.
See, my real family, the ones related to my by blood? they’re scum. They raised me up until I was about 8, until I was old enough to realize that the way I was being treated? You aren’t allowed to treat little kids that way.
And then they threw me out.
Talk about a close family, ‘m’I’right?
So, yeah. I’m a street rat. I got good at stealin’ and manipulatin’ people, cause I had to.
If you think any kid wants to live the sort of life where you never know if you’ll eat or not, you’re a fool.

But that isn’t what I’m trying to say here, not really.

My family I was born into, I hate them. Who wouldn’t, after bein’ abandoned by them? I hardly even consider them my family anymore. But... I do have a family. I do. See, I may be a gutter kid, but us good-for-nothin’s, we stick together. I got a whole group of ‘em, they’re all my family. I take care of them- I’m the biggest brother, I guess. They look up to me, and I look out for them.
So yeah, I guess I do have a family, and I love my family with all of my heart.
But, you know what they say.
“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”
We may not be family by blood... but outs are bonds that’ll never be broken.
