Not sure if this is the right thread to ask a question on -- I can move it if needed, but do you have to ask permission / inform the other user ahead of time if you plan to gift a Sweeten to them?

no, you don't have to let a user ahead of time know that you are gifting them! you also don't need permission, though if you don't point out your gift, the user you are gifting may not notice. ^^

^ Very much this! So while not required at all, I highly recommend DMing the person after gifting someone just so they see it, as many don't check the thread often--or at all for that matter, as some people don't even have the thread marked.

Hi all! Happy Anniversary! Today marks one whole year since Sweetens was created! Can you believe it's been that long already? Or does it feel even longer than that, and it's crazy to think Sweetens has only been around for a year? Sometimes I can't even tell which one of those I feel myself. So recent and so long ago all at the same time.

One year ago, around 10pm EST on February 11th, I sat down and got to work on a little pixel cat lineart after a closed species by the name of Mutatoes revitalized my love for User-made Adoptables I had when I was younger. I redid it about three times before finally settling on what we have today, and around 11:30 I created the first Sweeten ever:



The rest of its littermates were hue-shifts, and finally at 12:26 AM on the 12th, I posted the thread, quickly thrown together with just a rules post and an adoption post (as I fully expected Sweetens to flop and didn't want to put too much work in until I knew it was something people were interested in) and posted the first litter around four minutes later. It was intended as a "test" litter to gauge interest (hence it being known as "litter 0" in the past litter archive), and was initially known as "Wingies" until I decided Sweetens was a better and more personal name.

In the beginning, believe it or not, Sweetens was very small. Litters were about 4-6 outcomes on average and often took several days (even with frequent bumping) to adopt out. Very different from today, where scheduled litters have been observed to be gone in less than two minutes. Our staff team back then was also pretty small--just me until late March, where Satamoru and Dragong joined the artists team, and then ggez and Fishkin joined the team as our first mods in late April!

Fast forward, about a month, and we celebrated "One Month Anni" and introduced Flyer Sweetens. I even made an announcement post, talking about just how much had changed in just one month. I was so emotional in that post, so excited to see that my dream was coming true. But compared to then, that change was miniscule compared to the growth Sweetens has made now. I'm so blessed and so lucky to have gotten such a big, bustling community and I couldn't be happier. If my dream was "coming true," then, then my dream has long since come true by now.

But here's the thing: in the beginning what I wanted most was to own a user-made adoptables thread where people wanted to adopt my designs, as I love to give people free adopts and always have. I wanted to share my love for a simpler time on Chicken Smoothie, bringing nostalgia to older members and introducing something that meant so much to me to newer users. But while I seem to have achieved that, and am very glad I have, I think my favorite part of Sweetens now is the people I got to meet. The staff team isn't just staff, they're my friends and I'm so, so glad I got to meet them, and we talk about stuff unrelated to Sweetens all the time as well as Sweetens stuff. People in the public server are also very lovely, and I love seeing what new messages have been posted there and getting to talk to people.

Interestingly, one of two major inspirations for Sweetens actually returned this year as well, which was also very exciting. I'm even an artist for them now, which is really exciting to me <:) (You may have seen them around, they're called Cloudy Leopards and you should check them out if you like Sweetens! They meant so much to me in 2013-2015.)

Sweetens originally meant to call back to older threads, but has long since evolved into its own thing, and I'm happy for that. I think that's a good thing that it evolved into something so much more than that and has its own identity.

I just wanted to share my thoughts, I suppose. It's been on my mind for some time and thought the anniversary would be the perfect time to post it.

So, I originally had something planned for today, but because we've been busy it may be delayed a bit. I'll try to get something to celebrate for all of you whenever I'm able!

Thank you all for being apart of Sweetens, for helping it get to where it is today. Thank you, staff, for working so hard and also just being great people in general. I can't thank any of you enough.
