So if I wanted to, like when adopting one I could put it in a not earthish place like a forest never seen on Earth or something?

Um, I suppose. Many real creatures appear in fictional "alternative realitys" or other planets. I suppose you could put the smili your applying for in a non-earthen enviroment, but the base of the smilis will be earth. It could be freakishly exact parallell evolution, or smilis got to the planet so long ago that they forgot about earth. Or something else. It could be coincidental and you don't need to explain how the smili got into the enviroment. It's possible that it doesen't know itself.
