Name of Serenche: Treader
Personality: Treader has a great view of life, and a unique understanding of how big and amazing life is. There is no "typical day" for him. He loves to explore and take mental notes. His personality is captured in every plant, cloud, and animal around him. Treader thinks of little adventures, missions, and quests for himself constantly. This Serenche loves anything that will keep him close to nature and will keep him busy for a while. Treader is big into puzzles and mysteries. He loves hunting down facts and finding clues. He keeps a list in his head of questions that need to be solved, and updates it on a regular basis! He lets himself have no rest before he gets an answer. Around other Serenches he is quite invasive, and runs straight through the lines of privacy. He is goofy and fun-loving once you get him to talk, but he tends to be very quiet for the most part. Like any Serenche, he loves a good cookie, but his favorites are sugar and oatmeal raisin.
History: When he was first born, Treader was the first in his litter to start walking. His father took a keen interest in him. He realized that Treader was a fine wolf, with intelligence to spare. His mother, however, looked after his two sisters. She claimed that a female wolf's job was more important in starting and raising a family, and that the sisters would help re-populate the Serenche breed. She forced them to do great things, to show off and to try to be better than Treader. But the two females weren't as strong as Treader. They failed at immpressing their father. He already had his eyes set on his son.
Of course, Treader was very proud. Very proud that his father took such a liking to him. But he couldn't do the things his father wanted him to do. He could explore and find out anything about everything, but he couldn't perfect a stalking crouch or escape from a hunter's trap with any ease. His father became distraught, and turned his attention towards his daughters. Things switched around, then. His mother became the one who taught him things, and let him appreciate the world the way he saw it. As a giant adventure. She cared for him and one day told him something that Treader had been waiting to hear his whole life.
"Hunting and hiding are matters of survival, yes, but if you can't have any fun in life, what is the point of protecting it?"
Treader felt complete after his mother told him this, and he tried his best to live by this "motto". The motto eventually led him to an important conclusion when he was still very young: that to really enjoy life to it's fullest, he couldn't be under the control of parents. He needed to set out on his own. And so, with a brief farewell, Treader left off to start his own life.
As soon as he left, a single tear trickled down his cheek. A last tear for his mother. The one who raised him even after doubting him. The one who shaped his personality and made him stand out from any other Serenche. He hated having to leave her alone, considering that his two sisters would also leave soon. He became very sad. After a day of wandering around in depression, he settled down by a lake bed. He glanced out at the water and stared at the moon's reflection. He eventually fell into a deep sleep...
He was at the same lake bed, crying. He watched as his dream figure cried tears into the lake, making it larger and larger, until he was sitting in the lake himself. He seemed oblivious as to what was happening. Then he looked up, and realized what was happening. He was drowning in a lake of his own tears. Before he slipped under he sang a poem.
"Little birds that fly,
Drifting wood floats by,
Every second of life.
I am sure we will see,
Some day what we will be,
Sharp and evil as a knife.
In my time of dying,
Now do you see?
The value of life,
Hidden under each tree?
I used to see it,
But that was before,
I hope you see it,
A little more,
In my time of dying."
Treader watched in horror as his dream-self started to drown. He shuddered, and begged himself to wake up. As he awoke, he began to have a new sensation. He was no longer depressed. He felt like he had more to value. More to explore. And so he got up from the lake bed and spat at it in disgust. He would not drown in his own tears. He would move on.
Every day Treader would find something new to see or do, but even this became pretty boring to him after a while. He needed to find others of his species to relate to. After staying in one area for a couple of months, Treader moved once again. His journey began at one last trip to "Dream Lake", the same lake his dream-self had drowned in. He dipped his head and looked out at it. It had become smaller since the dream. Almost as if his tears had been soaked up again. As if they had never been shed. Then Treader checked to make sure his hat was still on his head. He went for one last fishing trip at the lake, and caught a nice, big breakfast. He ate quickly, savoring every bite. Then he began running towards a few distant hills and trees.
Every hour or so Treader would stop to rest. On the second rest area he had used, there were still a couple bites of old meat from when someone had lived in the place. As he bent down to pick up the meat, he recognized Serenche scent. Either a Serenche had eaten this animal, or this animal was, in fact, a Serenche. Not wanting to take chances, Treader cut his break short and moved on at a slower pace.
When Treader had continued walking for about 3 minutes, he once again laid down to continue his nap. He nestled in between two sloping hills, green and lush and covered with trees. It was very comfortable, and he soon drifted off. But he was soon awoken by a snarl. He jumped up and turned around. A giant creature, moving so fast that he couldn't name it was charging at him. He could tell that he was, in this creature's eyes, easy prey. It would take a lot of fighting to convince this monster that Treader wasn't meant to be a meal. Treader lunged to the side, escaping so closely that he could feel the air of the animal's giant claws swoosh past his ear, taking off some orange and white fur with it. Treader froze, amazed at the animal's swiftness. Unfortunately, that lost him some time. The creature managed to pin him down. At an inch away from Treader's throat, the animal made a low, bellowing sound. He fell to the ground, a huge gash in his side. Shocked, Treader got to his feet. A gray and white Serenche stood behind the animal, smiling.
"How- how did you take that thing down!?" Treader yelled with exitment.
"Aw, it was nothing. I've been fighting these things for years!" answered the Serenche calmly.
"Do you know what they are?" asked Treader nervously.
"Kinda hard to say. They move so quickly, and even when they're dead they're pretty much unrecognizable."
Treader looked down at the huge body, with giant claws and a tail that could easily knock the breath out of a bear. It was a hard thing to explain, the looks of this monster.
"They've taken down two of my friends." the Serenche said sadly.
Treader realized that the meat from his earlier resting spot were Serenche remains after all. He dipped his head.
"So, uh, who are you?" Treader questioned awkwardly.
"Oh, me? I don't know my real name, since I never really knew my parents, but I call myself Gray."
"Hello, Gray." Treader looked down at his feet.
Gray chuckled softly. "Hey. So, where ya from?"
Treader smiled. "I originally come from a pack in the lightest part of the forest our species dare to go, but lately I've been out on my own. This is the first real adventure I've had in a long time!" His smile grew wider as he once again glanced down at the massive body of the beast. Treader walked around to the other side of the animal, to where Gray was. He preferred to be quiet, and so he did not say any more. He simply nodded once.
After a while, Treader and Gray became great friends. They spent two months with each other, until another beast attacked their makeshift camp and badly injured Gray. Gray knew that his time was over, and he told Treader to remember him for his faults. When Treader asked why, he simply replied "All new generations learn from the mistakes in the old ones. You will pass on my faults to future generations. Remember me for my faults." He smiled, took a breath, sighed, and closed his eyes. Never to awake again.
Of course, Treader was very upset. But he couldn't help smiling. Gray had been such a good friend to him. And his last words, just like him, made hardly any sense at all. Yet they made more sense then anything Treader had ever heard before.
"Goodbye, friend." he muttered. "I will never forget you."
Before leaving once again, Treader visited the pile of human objects that Gray had collected since he was a young Serenche. He took a hat from the pile, which Gray had always wanted him to keep. He silently thanked his friend, and dug out a grave for him. He wrote in the dirt with his front claw: "To a Good Friend a Loyal Soul~ R.I.P. Gray". He turned to his friend, now motionless. He felt an ache in his throat as he bended down to place his friend in the ditch. He left him on the ground, where he had been his whole life. It made more sense to him, anyways. Then, with one final glance at everything, Treader set off again in search of a pack and a mate. He is still on his quest...
Which Cage?: Cage 1
