Usually using a program like Photoshop or Gimp and making the background into an "Alpha layer" (The grey checkered board). Then save it as a png file instead of gif or jpg.

You can, I believe, color them in as you wish. But you can't make them as your pets. It is just for fun, and I'm pretty sure they shouldn't be posted anywhere but here. I wouldn't quote me on that last bit though.
