Why I want this Character: Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. I actually died when I saw this beautiful boy. I really clicked with him- I know it sounds cliche, but it's so true. I know exactly where he'd fit in with my character 'family'- he'd be the best friend and devoted companion of my boy, Faro. I absolutely promise to treasure Daern if I get him, and he will get regular art and have a home on my character thread and website. I will also make him a main character of the story I am writing, alongside Faro- If I am lucky enough to get him, you'll definately be seeing a lot of him! Thank you for the opportunity to adopt such a wonderful character <3

Name: Daern. {Day-Urn}
origin~ Rohamir. Means 'fighter'.
Age: Twenty-Six, in Human years.
Gender: Male.

Personality: Like his friend, Faro, Daern can be extremely difficult to figure out. He's easily irritated and very quick to anger- his temper is something that lies close to the surface of him, it's always there. He finds himself getting angry often, and Daern can find it hard to deal with, resulting in him striding quickly away from the situation before someone gets hurt. His high status- Deputy Commander of Rohamir's army- has gained him respect and admiration from most people he meets. Opinions of Daern are usually divided. There are those that love him, and are loyal, admiring his battle worn air and intelligence. There are also others that dislike him, seeing his arrogance and cold attitude. Either way, there is one thing they cannot dispute- Daern's close relationship with the King, Faro.

He's passionate, and often fierce. He appears intimidating to those of a lower status, as well he knows. Daern has been through a lot, and it's left his emotions in tatters. He avoids getting close to people because of this- he knows he'll just hurt them.

History:

"No. I'm telling you now- you'll die, I'll die, they'll die. You know I'd follow you to the ends of the earth and I don't fear death, but this is suicide, Faro."

Daern stared at the King from across the table, face impassive. Faro's brow twitched with irritance; it was lucky that he had grown to tolerate Daern's foul temper as he was the only one he would accept such attitude from. "What do you suggest, then?" He replied calmly, studying the weathered map that lay limply across the table. "We'll go the East way. Me, you, we can take a couple hundred men. Faro, we could do this." Daern seemed to buzz with electric adrenaline. The way around through the East was certainly quicker, and the King knew they needed speed. His army grew exhausted, and morale was low, yet every man knew the East was a deathtrap in itself. Rouges, rebels and even soldiers of the Dark stalked the perilous route, and all the while they would be riding close to Ithren- the Spellcaster's magick would be stronger, and they would not stand a chance if seen.

Faro gave a heavy sigh, gazing at Daern with weary eyes. "That would be more dangerous than riding over a cliff-edge, Daern. What if we were caught? I am well aware you are an extraordinary warrior, but even you could not survive a Death spell from a seasoned caster. Blood means nothing in the dark lands of Ithren- I would have thought you of all people would know that."

A flash of agony as fresh as a newborn wound cut through Daern's rugged features, and he paled as if ready to vomit. There was silence, then with a flurry of movement the Commander strode from the room.

Faro's stomach clenched. He knew it was a low card to remind Daern of the pain they had both suffered in Ithren, but he saw no other way to talk sense. It had happened two years ago. Faro was not yet King, and Daern merely a horseman of the guard. Dark Riders came in the night, taking the pair hostage and holding them in the spire of Ithren tower. Many horrific nights passed, and the pain they endured forged a bond as strong as a sword between them; yet they believed they would die here, and they very nearly did. One evening, a stranger let himself into their cell. He was cloaked, and armed- vicious beyond compare. He brutally beat them both, during which his hood fell down, revealing himself to be none other than Ylin, Daern's father. The event taught them that no-one was safe, no-one could be trusted. Faro could do nothing but watch as Daern retreated further into himself, and grew miserable, even after their escape.

Shivering at the memory, Faro stood, leaving the pavillion to pursue Daern.

Daern had reached the broad river encircling their camp. His heart raced, pounding hard behind the dirt-splattered skin on his chest. He felt as if it were ready to burst from his chest. Shaken, he clenched both hands into fists- he really needed to hit something, and hard. Trust Faro to bring their experience of Ithren up. All his life, Daern had searched for somewhere to fit in. He'd grown up in a tiny village under the name of a 'changeling child'. His mother had died in childbirth, and he distinctly remembered promising himself he'd find his father one day. He'd romp in the forests pretending to find him. His father was perfect- an imaginary character he'd never met, yet thought he knew him better than anyone. Daern was wrong- his father was working for the dark King, an assassin, a venemous snake that would stop at nothing to ensure the deaths of those that favoured light and peace. Blood really did mean nothing to him.

The cell was frozen- frost gathered on the iron bars of the small window they had. There was a grating noise, and both Daern and Faro leapt to their feet, senses alert and fear-riddled. A hooded figure stepped through the heavy door, blending effortlessly into the shadows as he neared them, locking the door behind him. Faro hissed an insult, moving closer to Daern. They'd learnt that there was strength in numbers, that way the blows would be divided equally. "I have come to...ask some questions." The voice of the hooded stranger was lilting- smooth and deathly calm; belying the mocking air beneath the velvet tones. Then he stepped closer, and their lives fell into a world of pain they knew not the escape.

Daern's stomach rolled, sickened by the vivid memory.

"It was wrong of me to bring that up, Daern. I shouldn't have done that, but you needed to see some sense." Faro's voice cut through the Commander's moment of nausea. Daern half-turned, green eyes dark as he took in the King's muscular form. His heart twinged. Faro was Daern's soulmate, that he was sure of. Perhaps not in a romantic sense, yet, but the King understood him and his anger like no other. He'd picked Daern up from the dust, cleaned him off, given him a job and a home. Healed his wounds- been there for him when no other had. Their bond was deep. Daern loved him like a brother, no doubt about that, but his pride often got in the way of showing this. "It's fine." He replied shortly. "You were right anyway, as always. Faro, I can never forget about what happened in Ithren-" Daern's voice broke off suddenly, haunted. It was then that Daern gave a passionate cry of frustration, spinning and driving his fist into a nearby tree.

The following cry was from the same man, but filled with pain and distress. The force of the impact had splintered the tree, leaving a mess of bark on the trunk. Daern's hand was in worse shape- bleeding heavily and hanging limp, very clearly broken. He hissed in a breath, trying to still his trembling. He avoided looking at the King. The punch had startled Faro, and his brow softened with sympathy. Ithren had affected Faro greatly, but not an ounce compared to the lasting nightmare it would give Daern. He swiftly moved towards him, and placed a hand on his quivering shoulder.

"Daern..." He began softly. "I'm not asking you to forget- I'm just asking you to remember you've seen great joy, also." Faro gently lifted Daern's shattered hand, inspecting it carefully. "That wasn't smart." He said lightly, dodging around Daern's fury as always he did when it surfaced. "A healer will see to this- it probably won't be as bad once it's cleaned up. I think you'll still be able to ride."

Daern twitched, desperately trying to fight the sharp and incessant pain in his hand. It seared his skin, sending jolts of it cascading up his arm. The two men watched each other for a moment, searching for words. There was none. Daern attempted a smile, but it didn't meet his eyes as he shook himself off, cradled his hand to his chest, and wandered in the vague direction of the healing tents.

Faro stared at the running water of the river for a few seconds. His heart hurt to see Daern in so much pain- yet he knew the Commander would fight like a wolf before letting anyone help him.
