“you’ve got to stop doing this.”
martik glared sullenly up at the sikaite that was busily bandaging him- yet again.
"it was just a young sikaite. it didn't see--" martik's excuse was cut off as he hissed in pain. this cut had been a nasty one- right on his ear.
the healer tutted disapprovingly.
"you can't always be their protector, you know." the healer finished off the bandage and tucked it in, stepping back to admire their handiwork.
"i can try."
"is it worth losing another leg? your other eye?"
"it is to me."
the healer sighed. "well, you're certainly keeping me in business so i can't complain. just... try to be careful."
martik grinned. "careful?"
this time was the healer's turn to glare. "martik."
"i know! but it was so little and that monster was one that's been picking off ones like that... young. and alone. i just- i just wanted to make sure it didn't happen again." martik finished, his eye darting away from the healer's face to study a spiderweb in the corner of the small wooden hut.
"your safety is worth something too."
the dappled pink-and-green sikaite sighed. "how much do i owe you?"
the healer's face softened. "nothing this time. but if i keep having to deal with you..."
martik gave the healer a cheeky grin and stepped out of the hut, wincing as the soft breeze hit the still-tender flesh of his torn ear.
"alright, i got it. stay out of trouble."
as he walked off from the hut in the middle of the woods, he heard the healer call "and eat something too! you're much too skinny!"
all the healer got in response was a grumbled "much too skinny...."
