Name:
Fate
Species:
Data Fox
Personality:
Fate is a difficult creature to understand. As she is technically not a living thing, she doesn't actually feel anything emotionally. She, like her "sister", Destiny, is programmed to respond to different situations. But both are programmed differently, therefore Fate's responses are still unique. Fate's responses to different situations are mostly cheeky - often in a subtle and sneaky way - and she is not as quiet as her sister.
Having said she is truly emotionless, she still has a "mind of her own". And Fate quite enjoys using it. Artificial intelligence is probably a halfway decent explanation of what Fate is - emphasis on "intelligence". Fate is programmed to have a desire to use her intelligence, and to a stranger would appear as witty and brainy. Witty is especially right. Fate appears to enjoy tricking others - but not in any malicious way. She is simply programmed to have an interest in the cunning and wit involved to fool someone.
Fate is quite stubborn, which is again, due to her programming. Once her mind is set on something, it stays that way. Much in the way when we click on something on a computer, the computer doesn't decide not to do it unless there is something else wrong.
While her sister longs to be a "real" fox, Fate longs for "real" emotions. She wants to understand what things like love and hate, sorrow and joy, all feel like.
Likes:
Fate's urge to use her intelligence causes her to gravitate to puzzles, mind games, practical jokes, and random trivia. Technically, she doesn't truly feel compassion, she has situations she is programmed to respond in a positive manner to. For example, she has no ability to respond negatively around her sister. (This was so that the two creations wouldn't damage each other.)
Dislikes:
A glitch in Fate's programming causes her to hate Fate and Destiny's creator, The Unnamed. The transition between the Data Realm and the Mortal Realm makes her feel "broken", and she finds the change in which eye she sees with uncomfortable. (Explained further in background.) Fate is also programmed to be cautious around others, which is partially to keep her safe. Otherwise, she doesn't "dislike" anything in the same way humans do.
Background
Prologue:
The computer whirred as it processed the information. The figure hunched over the keyboard and gazed at the screen, gnawing his lip. Would they make it? He was tired of losing his creations. He was tired of failure. He had put many of his creations through this process, and all had disappeared or crashed the system so far.
He often wondered about the world he created, the Data Realm. What was it like? He imagined slightly chaotic at this point in time. All had their own different responses to the situations. Perhaps, if all went according to plan, he could see this for himself. Perhaps he could travel to the Data Realm.
Then the nearby machine he had created began to buzz and hiss. Sparks flew as it emitted a low hum, and the man felt his heart begin to pound. This could be it. They might make it.
Chapter 1: Arrival
***
Fate gasped as she entered the Mortal Realm. The creature blinked her one "good" eye, realising with sudden shock she was seeing out of her blind, yellow eye and the other had gone blind. Slowly, Fate shifted her gaze from the tiled floor and found herself staring at a figure who seemed to be staring back. She couldn't see his face, as he wore all black garments, and hid his face behind a dark mask for the purpose of her not being able to identify him. Fate's instant reaction was hostility. "Enemy," she hissed, barely aware she had spoken.
"Destiny," Fate whispered quietly to the other Data Fox. The human seemed to hear her, and suddenly stood bolt upright from his office chair and sprinted into a nearby corridor. "Destiny, this is the Mortal Realm. We're here." The Data Fox lifted her head, staring blankly at the light illuminating the entire laboratory. "Light." She said, recognising it as she was programmed to.
Fate looked around at Destiny, sighing. "That... man. I don't like him," she explained.
"I know," Destiny replied gently. "We still have to wait here."
"Why? He's programmed us with what we need to know. Let's get out of here."
"But I don't think it's enough, Fate," Destiny explained, flicking her tail. "We haven't been here before."
Fate knew a word for moments like this. "Flapdoodle!" she exclaimed.
"I don't understand that," Destiny replied, as she was trained to in such a situation.
"As in, nonsense, Destiny."
"Oh."
The man returned with a strange contraption in his hands, Fate recognised it as a camera. It was of the filming variety, she remembered. "Enemy," she muttered under breath. "Enemy, enemy, enemy," her mind screamed. "Destiny, let's go already," the Data Fox hissed. Had she been able to, Fate might've forced her sister out of that place. But she couldn't. Fate's programming would not allow her to harm Destiny in any way.
The nameless figure pointed towards the nearby hallway, beckoning for the two foxes to head towards it. Suddenly, where the foxes stood, they began to fade back into the Data Realm.
Chapter 2: Determination
Fate shut her eyes tightly, she felt like she would break at any moment. Opening her eyes, Fate could once more see through her "good" eye. The yellow eye she had been seeing out of in the Mortal Realm had gone blind again.
"We're back," Fate gave a sigh of relief. The Data Foxes managed to stay in their computer generated "homeland" for a few minutes before Fate recognised the feeling of being sent back to the Mortal World. As she appeared back in the lab, she saw the figure again. The "enemy" watching her, still holding the video camera in his shaking hands. Again, he pointed to the corridor. Fate stood where she was, snarling at the figure.
"Fate!" Destiny scolded her sister. "Let's go, it'll be fine."
"Enemy, enemy, enemy." Like a record, the word kept on repeating itself in Fate's mind. Fate wasn't going to move. A crackly, deep voice rang out - the man was speaking.
"Aren't you coming, Fate?"
Fate shook her head vigorously.
"Destiny's coming, aren't you, girl?" The black-clad figure glanced across at the other fox, who said nothing and nodded. Lowering the video camera to extend a hand, he asked gently, "Don't you want to come to, Fate?"
Again, Fate shook her head.
***
How interesting. He knew both of his creations were determined - it was how they got their names. He made them that way. But why did Fate seem to hate him so, and Destiny didn't? Clearly a glitch in Fate's responses. But it was too late to fix it. He would simply have to live with it.
"So, you want to stay here, Fate?" he asked. A microphine under the dark mask covering his face projected his voice in a distorted manner. Given Fate's attitude towards him, he was grateful for it too. He didn't want her to be able to identify anything about him. Fate was behaving like a stubborn child!
And if she was a child, was he the closest thing she and Destiny had to a father? A wave of compassion for the Data Foxes swept over him and he smiled behind his mask. He suddenly snapped back into reality. They didn't feel anything. They were just data.
Chapter 3: Separation
***
Fate said nothing. She avoided the man's gaze altogether. "I don't understand this," she said. Fate's programming only allowed her to seem confused.
"Destiny and I are going now, Fate." The man marched off to the hall with Destiny in tow.
For three days, the two Data Foxes were mostly kept away from each other due to Fate's negative reaction to nameless man who had created them. The only times they were together were during the day when their creator decided to attempt some experiments. Seeing how fast they could go between the Data Realm and the Mortal Realm - expansions on the original experiment.
At night, Destiny and Fate were separated. Destiny would disappear into the mysterious corridor, and Fate would stay where she was.
This was all fine, until the evening of their third day in the Mortal World.
Chapter 4: Fire
Fate realised something was wrong when she heard a loud ringing in her ears. A fire alarm. She was programmed to remember that it meant trouble. She heard glass smashing somewhere, as well as some sort of crackling noise. Fate sniffed the air, coughing as she did so. Smoke. There was a fire somewhere in the building.
Fate wasn't frightened. She knew it was bad, and had a desire to stay away from it, but she wasn't scared. The Data Fox paced around the room, searching for an escape.
Then she remembered she had an escape route. Fate and Destiny had been perfecting their ability to enter the Data Realm for days. She might be safe if she went there. First, she would find Destiny. But she had a door to get through first. And she couldn't. It simply wasn't built for paws to open. She would have to leave Destiny behind.
Fate examined her surroundings once more through her one yellow eye. There were no windows, and she could smell the smoke getting stronger as the fire hungrily devoured the building. She would have to retreat to the Data Realm. Fate closed both of her eyes, remembering the techniques she and Destiny had practiced.
Within moments, Fate found herself back in the Data Realm. She felt pleased at having to use her intelligence for something. Her next concerns were staying in the Data Realm. On their first day in the Mortal Realm, both Fate and Destiny had sent themselves back to the Data Realm without realising it. Would it work both ways?
She had to distract herself. She couldn't think about Destiny, the lab, or their enigmatic creator.
Chapter 5: Where Are You?
Fate returned to the Mortal Realm a few days later, finding herself standing beside a ruined machine amongst piles of charred rubble. So much had been destroyed in one fire. "Destiny?" she called, unable to see her sister in the burnt wasteland. "Destiny? Where are you?"
The Data Fox was puzzled. Where was her sister?
She thought over the possibilities. Perhaps the "enemy" had escaped and taken Destiny with him. Perhaps Destiny was still in the Data Realm. There was also the chance that Destiny was damaged beyond repair, which distressed Fate whose instincts told her to care for her "sister".
Fate, to this day, does not know where Destiny is. But that is not to say that the two have lost track of each other completely. Fate and Destiny often "dream" about each other. Fate has observed the humans and their emotions, now desiring the same feelings they have.
And what of their creator? Neither of the Data Foxes know. They call him The Unnamed, and neither Fate nor Destiny know whether he survived the fire.
So, these days, Fate wanders the world - both Mortal and Data - in search of Destiny and the ability to feel true emotions. Where will it take her? Perhaps, rather literally, that is up to Fate and Destiny.
