what's your favorite breed of horse and why?;; (for horse litter only) This is long.
My favorite breed of horse is a quarter horse. When I was 16, my uncle bought a rescued quarter horse that came from a very bad home, but wouldn't let anyone on him. I've worked with horses my whole life (not professionally or even for a job. Just because I have.) so he figured he could board Moose at our family's farm and I could work with him. It didn't take long to figure out this horse was severely underweight and most of his riding problems (that weren't strength-based) were because of his trust issues. I figured out he was a barrel-racer, and his horrible condition was because he had lost and was being punished.
We called up our local vet to take a look at him and make sure he didn't have any diseases and she confirmed my theories: First off, he was pretty young. Second, he was 348 pounds underweight.
After a year of working with him and giving him healthy bulk food, gaining his trust, and getting him used to wearing a saddle, our vet had confirmed he was on a remarkably quick road to recovery. Moose had also developed jealousy issues throughout that year. If at any point someone was around me, he was between us. Didn't matter if it were my dad (who's scared of horses,) my mom, or my brothers. He was quick to wedge his way between whoever I was talking to. Annoying? Yes. Adorable? Absolutely. It never got out of hand, and his trust issues with others were worked out pretty well. It was about this time that my uncle drove up the driveway and said, "Steph. You'll need these." He handed me a bucket with a bunch of random gear that he bought for Moose.
"Forget these after a year, eh?" I asked.
"No. Happy birthday."
My birthday was two months prior to this day, but...wow.
Moose's overcoming of jealous didn't stop him from trying to scare the living biscuits out of my boyfriend when they first met. He went out of the gate running, and I swear that horse laughed. They quickly bonded. Moose also became our alarm system when our cows got out of the fence, and has also been seen rounding them up on his own and bringing them to the front yard (he just casually jumped the fence but okay Moose, you do you. He never left our property, was always safe, he just did what he wanted. He was like a big dog. He even stole my hamburger at one point. Right out of my hand.)
Finally came the day that I had to go to college. Move on campus and leave Moose. We found a family friend with horses willing to take him in and we visit him at least once a week with treats*. My dad cried when Moose was trucked off (and naturally, so did I) but we always keep a good supply of nums for him and his friends when we go see them. Moose changed my dad's perspective on horses. Whereas he was once terrified of horses, he loves Moose and would take him back if we could. When Moose was strong enough, he even let my dad sit in the saddle and let me lead him. My dad hadn't been on a horse in over forty years.
*Just to elaborate on that: my dad visited him once or more every week for four years, I visited whenever I was home. Now that I've graduated I visit once or more a week. Just to clear any confusion XD
So yeah. Moose. He's the reason why quarter horses are my favorite.
other;; Thank you for this opportunity, and good luck everyone!!
